The “preview” refers to the early look at issue #1, not a documentary or a separate book. For the complete first story, start with the collected paperback; the Storybook Edition adds a prequel and collector extras.
What is Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees about?
Woodbrook looks like a cozy community populated by friendly anthropomorphic animals. Samantha Strong, a brown bear who runs a thriving local business, appears to fit right in—but she is secretly a serial killer. She follows one strict rule: she does not murder the town’s residents. When one of Woodbrook’s own is killed, Samantha investigates the rival whose actions threaten the carefully ordered life she has built.
The story’s central tension comes from that contrast: inviting small-town surroundings and cute animal characters set against murder and brutal horror. It is best approached as adult cozy horror and crime, not as a children’s book. The first-issue preview’s hook, “Don’t. Murder. The locals,” captures Samantha’s rule, but the story’s violence is part of the premise. Graphic Policy’s October 2023 issue #1 preview introduced the early solicitation.
What does “preview” refer to?
Graphic Policy posted a preview of issue #1 on October 17, 2023, ahead of its listed October 18 in-shops date. The preview listed a suggested retail price of $3.99. Those are historical launch details for the single issue, not current prices or availability for the collected book.

What follows the first story?
Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring is a six-issue sequel. IDW announced that its first issue was scheduled for July 9, 2025; PRH lists the collected paperback as published July 21, 2026. Its publisher synopsis returns to Woodbrook almost a decade after the original story, as the internet age threatens Samantha’s ability to keep secrets and survivors continue seeking justice. The sequel is a next read, not an alternative starting volume.
In IDW’s announcement, editor Jake Williams described the sequel as “darker, scarier, gorier, and maybe even a little bit cuter.” That is a publisher’s characterization of the follow-up, rather than a substitute for the first book’s premise. IDW’s announcement and catalog cover the sequel; the PRH listing supplies its collected-edition details.

Recognition and sales context
Penguin Random House identifies the original graphic novel as the winner of the 2025 Harvey Award for Book of the Year. Separately, IDW announced on October 30, 2024 that the collected original had sold 20,000 copies and was receiving a second printing. That figure is the publisher’s reported sales milestone, not an independently audited total. In May 2026, IDW listed Rite of Spring for Best Limited Series and the Storybook Edition for Best Graphic Album-Reprint in its 2026 Eisner Award nominations announcement; these were nominations, not wins.
