Ben Potter, the YouTube creator known as Comicstorian, died at age 40 on June 8, 2024, after what his wife initially described as an “unfortunate accident.” Later reporting citing the Colorado State Patrol identified the incident as a fatal single-vehicle crash on Interstate 25 in Colorado.
Potter’s wife, Nathalie Potter, announced his death on June 10 through the Comicstorian and Mangastorian social-media accounts. Her statement did not initially describe the crash or disclose its cause. Instead, she asked the public to respect the family’s privacy while she grieved.
What happened to Ben Potter?
According to later reports citing information from the Colorado State Patrol, Potter was driving a silver Toyota 4Runner southbound on I-25 near milepost 267.5, close to Fort Collins, Colorado. The vehicle reportedly left the right shoulder, crossed a frontage road and rolled multiple times.

Potter was the only person in the vehicle and was wearing a seat belt. He died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. No other vehicle was involved.
At the time of the reporting, the investigation remained open. Authorities had not publicly established that impairment or excessive speed contributed to the crash. The available reporting also does not establish why the vehicle left the roadway. Claims involving intoxication, a medical emergency, a mechanical failure or any other specific cause would be speculation.
Why did Nathalie Potter call it an “unfortunate accident”?
Nathalie Potter’s initial wording and the later crash reports are not contradictory. Her June 10 announcement used the general phrase “unfortunate accident” and withheld further details while the family dealt with the death. News reports published afterward supplied additional information attributed to the Colorado State Patrol, including the location and circumstances of the single-vehicle crash.
The family’s original statement should not be read as confirmation of a particular cause. What is publicly established is that Potter died on June 8 and that later reporting identified the event as a fatal rollover crash on I-25.

Who was Comicstorian?
Ben Potter built Comicstorian into one of YouTube’s best-known comic-book channels over more than a decade. The channel presented narrated summaries, dramatic readings and audio-drama-style adaptations of comic-book stories, along with character explanations and commentary.
Its subject matter included stories and characters from DC, Marvel and independent publishers, as well as manga, games and related popular culture. The channel had more than three million subscribers around the time of Potter’s death.
Potter’s approach helped make complex comic-book plots easier to follow for viewers who wanted a story overview, a refresher on a long-running character or an introduction to a major storyline. His work was commentary and adaptation-oriented content rather than a replacement for reading the original comics.
Potter’s final Comicstorian video
The verified Comicstorian channel published Potter’s final main-channel upload, Why DC’s Reboots Beat Marvel, on June 7, 2024—one day before his death.

The timing was later noted by viewers and news organizations, but it does not provide information about the cause of the crash. It was a piece of Potter’s ongoing commentary about comic-book publishing and continuity, not a statement connected to his death.
What happens to Comicstorian now?
Nathalie Potter’s announcement described Comicstorian as one of Ben’s greatest accomplishments and said the team hoped to continue telling stories in his honor.
The channel’s current description identifies Dan, Potter’s longtime friend and business partner, as the current Comicstorian. It also describes the operation as an Eligible Monster Production and lists related channels covering full stories, manga, gaming lore, podcasts and commentary.
That means Comicstorian should not simply be described as abandoned after Potter’s death. The channel’s current presentation indicates that Dan and the wider team have continued the storytelling role, although the available information does not establish that every future video will follow Potter’s exact format or schedule.

Potter’s place in comic-book fandom
Comicstorian occupied a distinctive space between comic-book criticism, plot explanation and audio storytelling. Potter’s videos reached viewers who followed major Marvel and DC storylines but needed help navigating reboots, alternate universes, sprawling crossovers and decades of continuity.
His work also introduced some viewers to the broader comic-book worlds behind the adaptations and characters they already knew from films, television, games and other media. That combination of accessibility and enthusiasm was central to the channel’s appeal.
What remains unconfirmed
- The precise reason Potter’s vehicle left the roadway.
- Any claim that intoxication, excessive speed, a medical event or mechanical failure caused the crash.
- Additional details that the family has chosen not to make public.
The confirmed account is narrower and more respectful: Ben Potter died at 40 on June 8, 2024. His wife initially described the death as an “unfortunate accident,” and subsequent reporting identified the accident as a fatal single-vehicle crash on Interstate 25 near Fort Collins, Colorado.
