Ben Affleck said there was no single scandal or defining incident behind his divorce from Jennifer Lopez. In a March 25, 2025, interview with GQ, he described the split as a private relationship ending and cautioned viewers not to treat Lopez’s documentary—or their different comfort levels with fame—as an explanation for it.
What Affleck said about the divorce
Speaking to GQ, Affleck rejected the idea that the couple’s breakup had one dramatic revelation behind it. As quoted by ELLE’s coverage of the interview, he said: “Yeah, there’s no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue. The truth is, when you talk to somebody, ‘Hey, what happened?’ Well, there is no: ‘This is what happened.’”
He characterized the relationship’s end in ordinary, rather than sensational, terms: “It’s just a story about people trying to figure out their lives and relationships in ways that we all sort of normally do.” That is Affleck’s account of the split, not an independently established explanation of every private event in the marriage.
Did he say Lopez’s documentary caused the split?
No. Affleck said Lopez’s documentary did not disclose the cause of the divorce, and he warned against assuming that viewers could understand the couple’s relationship problems from watching it. He also said their different approaches to public life were not the source of “some major fracture.”

Affleck acknowledged that Lopez was more comfortable navigating fame than he was. “There are a lot of people who I think have handled celebrity more adeptly and more adroitly than I have, Jennifer among them. My temperament is to be a little bit more reserved and private than hers,” he said, according to ELLE. He added that he did not want his remarks to be read as “any negativity or judgment” about her.
When the divorce became final
The legal timeline puts Affleck’s remarks in context. Lopez filed for divorce in August 2024. A judge approved the settlement on January 6, 2025, and the divorce took effect February 21, 2025. The Associated Press reported that they reached the settlement through mediation, neither would pay the other spousal support, and they have no children together. Affleck’s GQ interview was published about a month after the divorce took effect.
