Before Rick Grimes: years of British television and theatre
Lincoln made his television debut in the 1994 series Drop the Dead Donkey, according to the Television Academy. His first major role came as Edgar “Egg” Cook in the BBC drama This Life, which gave him a sustained on-camera platform after theatre training. In a 2016 interview with The Guardian, Lincoln said the series brought him leverage, notoriety and access to meetings, as well as valuable experience in front of a camera.
Teachers added a new skill
Lincoln went on to play Simon Casey in the British sitcom Teachers, where he also made his directorial debut. The Television Academy records his BAFTA TV nomination for Best New Director (Fiction); the series received six BAFTA nominations between 2002 and 2004. Those nominations document recognition for the programme and Lincoln’s directing, not a measure of audience size or fame.
Theatre work opened a route to film
Lincoln continued to work on stage, including in Joe Penhall’s Blue/Orange at the National Theatre. The Guardian reported that Richard Curtis saw him in the play and cast him in Love Actually. Lincoln played Mark in the 2003 film, a visible supporting role that brought him to film audiences; the Television Academy describes it as the role for which he was perhaps best known to those viewers.

How did Andrew Lincoln get the role of Rick Grimes?
On April 6, 2010, AMC announced that Lincoln would play Rick Grimes, the lead character in its television adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s comic series published by Image Comics. AMC described Rick as a small-town police officer leading survivors after a zombie apocalypse. The series launched in the United States in October 2010, according to The Guardian.
Lincoln’s earlier work helped make the casting plausible without making it inevitable. The Guardian reported that playing American characters in stage and screen roles helped reassure US casting directors about his ability to move between accents. AMC executives and the comic’s creator praised the choice in the casting announcement. Joel Stillerman, then AMC’s senior vice president of original programming, production and digital content, said, “Andrew is an incredibly gifted actor. He has the presence and attitude to bring this character and story to life.” Kirkman called him “an amazing find.”

Why the script persuaded him—and what the role demanded
In a 2013 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Lincoln said he had initially hesitated about joining a zombie series. The unusual setting and its potential to examine human nature changed his mind: “What sort of attracted me to doing it is this landscape is so extraordinary and weird, but you get to say something and almost distill what it is to be human.” The appeal, in his account, was not only the genre but the chance to explore how people behave under extreme pressure.
Building an American Southern voice
Playing Rick also required sustained dialect work. The Television Academy noted that Lincoln discussed learning the accent as one of the role’s challenges. In a 2015 profile, The Guardian described his deliberate practice and use of the voice while filming. That work helped make the British actor’s portrayal of an American lawman convincing across the series.

What changed when Lincoln became Rick Grimes?
Before 2010, Lincoln’s career was a progression across British television, theatre and film: an ensemble breakthrough in This Life, sitcom and directing experience in Teachers, stage work, and a prominent part in Love Actually. Rick was a different kind of opportunity—a lead role in an American series, sustained over multiple seasons and watched by an international audience.
The role also demanded a different screen persona. Director Michael Attenborough, quoted by The Guardian in 2015, described Lincoln’s performance as combining “charm and danger,” a quality that, in Attenborough’s interpretation, helped keep a darker character likable. This is an attributed critical view, not a universal verdict. There is no suitable publisher-backed statistic in the cited sources that quantifies Lincoln’s stardom; the documented roles, casting and contemporary reporting show the scale of the career shift more reliably than an unsupported fame or ratings figure.
