In a PEOPLE interview republished by AOL on December 6, 2024, Carlisle said she met Mason at a party in 1984 and moved in with him the day after. She said they had been together ever since. The feature dates their wedding to April 1986, making the distinction important: their relationship began before their marriage. AOL’s December 2024 interview reported both dates.

Carlisle’s earlier account to CNN’s The Joy Behar Show is consistent with that timeline. On September 3, 2010, she said they had been married for 24 years and together for 26½ years. Those figures align with an April 1986 wedding and a relationship beginning in 1984. CNN’s 2010 interview provides that earlier snapshot.

They make each other laugh
Asked about the secret to their lasting marriage, Carlisle answered, “We laugh a lot.” She also said, “We love being together, and we like each other’s company.” Her account presents affection and enjoyment of ordinary time together as central to their bond.

They allow each other independence
Carlisle described a relationship in which each partner can pursue separate interests without requiring the other to join. “It just works. But if he wants to go play golf or do something for the day, it’s fine. We don’t really tell each other what to do,” she said. She added that she sometimes travels with friends when Mason does not want to come.
In a 2010 interview with Parade, Carlisle similarly described the importance of space and personal responsibility for happiness. “I think the secret to our marriage is that we give each other a lot of space, and that ours is not a co-dependent thing,” she said. That comment belongs to her earlier account; it should not be mistaken for a new statement from the 2024 feature. Parade’s 2010 interview discusses that period.

Earlier strain and how Carlisle described it
In interviews around 2010, Carlisle spoke about the effect her addiction had on her family and marriage. She said Mason reached a point where he told her to figure it out. The Guardian revisited the marriage in a 2021 interview, describing the couple as married for 35 years and discussing how it had endured through her addiction. These are accounts from different points in time; the December 2024 PEOPLE interview focused on Carlisle’s description of their present-day dynamic rather than revisiting that history. Family and their son
The 2024 feature also says Carlisle and Mason have a son, James Duke Mason. Carlisle said he came out at 14 and that his parents accepted him: “My son came out when he was 14,” she said, adding, “We accepted him, of course.” She also said she wanted him to be his own person.
