Uyare is a 2019 Malayalam drama about Pallavi, an aspiring pilot whose life changes after an acid attack. Its director described it as fiction inspired by real incidents and people—not a biopic like Chhapaak, the later film about acid-attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal.
What is Uyare about?
Directed by Manu Ashokan, Uyare follows Pallavi, a young woman from Kerala who moves to Mumbai to pursue her goal of becoming a pilot. When her possessive boyfriend attacks her with acid after she decides to leave him, the assault disrupts her ambitions and changes the course of her life. The story then follows her as she finds support and rebuilds her life.
Parvathy plays Pallavi. The BBFC lists Tovino Thomas, Asif Ali, Samyuktha Menon, Anarkali Marikar and Siddique among the film’s cast as well. Cinema Express interviewed Parvathy about the film.
Is Uyare based on a true story like Chhapaak?
Not as a biopic of one named person, according to its director. At the International Film Festival of India in November 2019, Manu Ashokan drew a distinction between the films: “Chhapaak is a biopic while Uyare is a fictional story inspired by real life incidents and people.” The story’s subject is an acid-attack survivor, but the available description does not establish that Pallavi represents Laxmi Agarwal or that Uyare retells her life.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The comparison with Chhapaak is therefore about subject matter, not a demonstrated shared source or adaptation relationship. Ashokan’s statement identifies different bases for the two stories; it does not establish that one film influenced or copied the other. The Government of India’s Press Information Bureau reported Ashokan’s comments on 25 November 2019.
Film details and content advice
The BBFC lists Uyare as a Malayalam drama made in 2019, directed by Manu Ashokan, with a runtime of 125 minutes and 20 seconds. Its listing gives 3 May 2019 as the UK cinema release date; that is not an India release date. For its classified version, the BBFC warns of a woman suffering facial scarring after a man throws acid at her, as well as a brief image of a bloody cut on a man’s wrist. What the reported acid-attack statistic says—and does not say
A 2019 Scroll.in article relayed a figure of 283 reported acid attacks from the National Crime Records Bureau for 2015. That is a dated figure as reported by a secondary source, not a current annual count. The original NCRB publication was not available in the sources cited here, so the number should not be treated as independently verified against its original table. Scroll.in’s 2019 article provides the reported figure and its context.
