Behind the Scenes of Half-Life: Alyx: How Valve Rebuilt the Series for VR

Valve rebuilt Half-Life around VR’s physical interactions—and designed around the medium’s limits, from movement choices to missing force feedback.

Half-Life: Alyx was not a conventional sequel adapted to a headset. Valve built it from the ground up for VR, using physical interaction to remake familiar series activities—exploring, solving puzzles and fighting—around the player’s hands and body. The design also had to work around a fundamental limitation: virtual objects can move with simulated force, but the player does not feel that force through a controller.

Where Alyx fits in the Half-Life story

Set between Half-Life and Half-Life 2, the game puts players in the role of Alyx Vance during an “impossible fight” against the Combine. Valve presented it as a return to the series through VR, not simply a familiar first-person game displayed inside a headset.

The design premise is plain in Valve’s own description: “VR was built to enable the gameplay that sits at the heart of Half-Life.” That meant bringing the series’ exploration and problem-solving into reach—literally—rather than treating VR as a different screen. Valve’s Steam description highlights actions such as leaning around a broken wall to aim, searching shelves for supplies, handling a multitool, throwing a bottle to distract an enemy and pulling a headcrab away.

Why physical interaction became the central design challenge

Making familiar actions feel hand-scale

In a flat-screen game, looking toward an object and pressing a button can stand in for interacting with it. Alyx could ask the player to reach, turn, grab, inspect and manipulate instead. Those actions make the environment part of the play, not just scenery around combat.

Valve developer Greg Coomer described Alyx as depending tremendously on robust physics, with a greater density of physical interactions than Half-Life 2. In a March 27, 2020 interview with UploadVR, Coomer said that the density and intricacy of those interactions mattered enormously. That requirement helps explain why object handling was not an incidental feature: the game’s moment-to-moment design depended on the world responding convincingly to the player’s hands.

Why objects are not all weapons

That emphasis on physics did not mean every object could work as a satisfying melee weapon. Coomer and developer Jason Mitchell explained that a virtual object can move in the simulation without transmitting matching force back to the player’s hand. As Coomer put it, “it’s not a strength of VR systems now, so we decided not to lean into it for that reason.” The constraint is a useful example of VR shaping not only what Valve added, but also what it chose not to emphasize.

The developers’ comments are in UploadVR’s interview with Coomer and Mitchell. They describe a design decision tied to the controllers’ lack of force feedback, not a claim that physical combat is impossible in every VR game.

How Valve used the player’s hands to create pressure

The Jeff encounter and competing demands

Mitchell said the team iterated on Jeff’s AI and the freezer sequence because the encounter was among the game’s hardest sections to get right. One deliberate tactic was to overload the player’s hands with simultaneous demands: aim a flashlight, use a multitool, open a door, throw bottles and cover the mouth. In ordinary action-game terms, those jobs might be assigned to buttons; here, making them physical turns attention and hand use into part of the challenge.

Horror introduced in stages

The developers also described pacing fear carefully. Mitchell noted that the first zombie is held behind a gate, leaving the player to choose whether to open it. Other moments let threats approach while barriers still provide protection. Coomer characterized this gradual introduction as intentional and responsible given VR’s visceral effect. It is a design rationale, not a guarantee that every player will experience fear in the same way.

Movement and play setup are adjustable

Valve lists several ways to play, including sitting or standing and roomscale play, as well as teleport, shift and continuous movement. Its official page also identifies finger-tracking and trigger-based controller styles. These are options rather than a single prescribed setup; Valve’s materials do not provide comparative comfort testing or designate one choice as best for everyone.

For hardware, Valve says computer VR hardware that works with SteamVR is supported. Its official game page gives current play guidance, while the Steam listing specifies SteamVR and lists these minimum PC requirements:

  • Windows 10
  • Intel Core i5-7500 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600
  • 12 GB of RAM
  • NVIDIA GTX 1060 or AMD RX 580, with 6 GB of VRAM
  • SteamVR support

These are the listed minimums, not a guarantee of an ideal experience or a comparison of headset models.

How the development connected to Valve’s VR hardware work

Coomer said much of Alyx’s development took place in concert with the team building the Index. He also described the game’s ending as a challenge to Valve’s next-generation VR work: “This is what we want from you, give us solutions that will let us build something like this.” In his account, the game helped express what the team wanted future VR solutions to make possible; that statement does not announce a particular future headset or game.

The developers also recalled that VR-game development resources were moved onto Alyx later in its development. Coomer said the late period still brought noticeable polish and detail, while Mitchell described holding some work until other elements were locked down. These are recollections about the project, not a complete production calendar or a description of every Valve project.

Character, tools and what to explore after the game

Alyx’s dialogue with Russell

Coomer said Alyx’s back-and-forth with Russell gave the protagonist more depth and presence than a character who says little. He also noted that newer Valve team members had worked on games such as Firewatch. His explanation speaks to the character-dialogue approach; it does not establish a full writing-room history.

Tools for community-made levels

The Steam listing says a set of Source 2 tools for building new levels is included, allowing players to create and contribute environments through the game’s Steam Workshop. That extends the game beyond Valve’s campaign by giving the community tools to build new spaces.
