What should you know before watching Hatsune Miku’s first anime movie? The 2025 film is an original story set in the world of Project SEKAI, centered on a new version of Miku who cannot make her voice reach the people she wants to reach. You do not need to treat it as a biography of the vocal-synthesis software or an adaptation of the Project DIVA games: this is a story about high school musician Hoshino Ichika, the virtual singers, and the feeling-shaped worlds known as Sekai.
What does “Hatsune Miku’s first anime movie” mean?
The official English title is COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing; its Japanese title is 劇場版プロジェクトセカイ 壊れたセカイと歌えないミク. Sega described the 2025 release as both Project SEKAI’s first anime film and the first film featuring Hatsune Miku. That is the relevant scope of “first”—it should not be stretched into a claim that Miku has never appeared in any other film, concert film, animation, or media.
The film opened in Japan on January 17, 2025. Sega reported that the first three days brought 230,000 admissions and more than ¥300 million in box-office revenue. Those figures are a dated early result, not a current total. Sega’s 2024 announcement also said the source game had passed 39 million global downloads at that time; that is likewise a historical figure, not a present-day count. What is the story, without spoilers?
Hoshino Ichika is a high school musician who hears an unfamiliar Miku singing. When the two meet again, Ichika learns that Miku wants to reach people through song, but her voice cannot reach them. Ichika offers to help her understand the people she hopes to connect with. The film’s Japanese official materials describe this Miku as a new character not present in the game and the movie as an original story produced by P.A.WORKS. The distributor’s tagline captures the central problem: “My voice cannot reach anyone.” The official Japanese film site presents the premise.

What is Project SEKAI, and what does “Sekai” mean?
Project SEKAI is a rhythm-and-adventure game built around high school characters, music, virtual singers, and Sekai: unusual worlds that reflect people’s true feelings and change as those feelings change. The virtual singers help the characters find and face those feelings. The setting gives the film a framework for its emotional story; it is not simply a concert plot or a general introduction to the real-world voice-synthesis software. The game’s official site and the film’s story page describe that world.
The distributor describes the movie as an all-new story featuring original characters alongside the game’s cast. Its official materials do not state that viewers must play the game first. The film’s premise and character relationships are laid out in the story setup, so a newcomer can use that as orientation without needing to learn the game’s systems beforehand. How does music shape the movie?
The songs are part of the film’s story and performance world. GKIDS identifies “The Future of Beginning (Hajimari no Mirai),” by 40mP and sasakure.UK with Hatsune Miku vocals, as the opening song, and “Worlders,” by Jin, as the ending song. The ending arrangement by TeddyLoid is sung by all 26 characters. GKIDS also says the film features six new insert songs for the units and Virtual Singers, produced by DECO*27. When did it play in theaters?
The theatrical dates varied by territory and announcement. Japan’s opening was January 17, 2025. GKIDS initially announced North American theatrical distribution beginning April 11, 2025; a later schedule update specified a U.S. limited run from April 17–20 and Canadian cinema screenings beginning May 11. Where can you watch it now?
As of October 8, 2026, GKIDS lists the film as available digitally and on standard and Collector’s Edition Blu-ray. Digital access depends on platform and territory, so check the catalog where you live rather than assuming one service carries it everywhere. GKIDS’ film page links to its current viewing and edition information.
Standard Blu-ray
GKIDS’ standard Blu-ray listing gives a June 16, 2026 release date and a runtime of 105 minutes. It lists Japanese audio; English, English SDH, French, and Spanish subtitles; and Region A/1. That region designation matters if your Blu-ray player is outside the compatible region. The standard edition includes video extras listed on the product page. Collector’s Edition Blu-ray
The Collector’s Edition adds packaging illustrated by animator Yuki Akiyama, a 36-page art book, and an acrylic standee. Its listed bonus features include 20 after-show concerts, unit 2D music videos, a non-credits opening, teasers, and trailers. Japanese streaming
The official Japanese film news page announced streaming on ABEMA, NicoNico, and other platforms beginning July 18, 2026.
