Weng Weng’s own story is more unusual: a brief, unevenly documented career built around a playful action hero, followed by a cult afterlife and efforts to recover the actor’s history.
Who was Weng Weng?
Weng Weng was the screen name of Ernesto de la Cruz, a Filipino actor reported to have stood 2 feet 9 inches tall. The sources differ on details of his life, including his death year, so some biographical particulars remain uncertain.
His stature was central to the visual premise of his films, but Agent 00 was not simply a punchline: the character was presented as a capable action hero who took on larger opponents and performed stunts. Scroll reported that Weng Weng did his own stunts. The contrast between his size and the familiar spy-hero confidence helped make the character instantly memorable.
How did Agent 00 make him a Filipino star?
From supporting roles to a spy parody
GMA News reports that a martial-arts instructor helped Weng Weng enter films. Before his breakout, he appeared alongside Dolphy in The Quick Brown Fox (1980) and Da Best In Da West (1981). Scroll credits producers Peter and Cora Ridon Caballes with mentoring him and launching him as Agent 00.

That breakthrough came with For Y’ur Height Only (1981), a Filipino spy parody whose title riffs on the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only. Weng Weng played Agent 00, a secret agent whose improbable physical presence became part of the joke while the action treated him as a resourceful hero. The combination turned a modest premise into a distinct screen persona.
Follow-up films and a brief career
The Impossible Kid (1982) continued Agent 00’s story. D’Wild Wild Weng (1982) followed the success of the spy films, though Scroll says it and subsequent films were less popular. These titles are examples of his work, not a complete filmography: accounts list different selections, and Scroll says Andrew Leavold’s documentary identifies 13 titles.

Scroll describes the Agent 00 films as successful internationally. Their later circulation on bootleg copies helped create overseas fans, but that reach did not necessarily translate into money for the actor. Family members and crew interviewed for Leavold’s documentary alleged that Weng Weng was not paid and was later abandoned. Those are reported accounts from interviewees, not a settled financial record.
Why was Weng Weng compared with Zero?
Shah Rukh Khan’s Bauua Singh in Zero and Weng Weng’s Agent 00 are both central characters whose short stature shapes how audiences see them. Beyond that visual point, the comparison has limits:

The comparison is a way to revisit an earlier screen portrayal, not evidence that Zero borrowed from, was inspired by, or is equivalent to Weng Weng’s films. The available account establishes a comparison between portrayals, not a direct link between productions.
How did a short career acquire a cult afterlife?
Filmmaker Andrew Leavold pursued Weng Weng’s story through interviews and research. SBS reported that Leavold spent nearly 20 years traveling to the Philippines to document the actor’s life. His documentary, The Search for Weng-Weng, premiered in Manila in 2013 and screened at the Melbourne Film Festival in 2014. SBS later reported that the documentary became a 242-page book; its current edition and availability are not established here.

Leavold’s account, hosted on Amazon, describes more than 40 interviews as part of his research. In that account, Weng Weng’s brother Celing de la Cruz recalled that he was “no bigger than a coke bottle” as an infant. That is a family recollection, not a measured birth-size record.
The documentary’s value lies in widening the story beyond Agent 00’s screen image. It brings together interviews and attempts to trace what happened to the actor after the films found fans abroad, including testimony about his treatment and the uneven rewards of that popularity.

What is known—and what remains disputed?
The sources agree on Weng Weng’s starring role in For Y’ur Height Only and his significance as a Filipino action-comedy performer. They do not agree on every biographical detail. Scroll gives his death year as 1999; GMA News and Leavold’s Amazon-hosted biography give August 1992. The available accounts do not resolve the conflict, so a definitive year cannot be stated from them.
There is also a name variation in Scroll’s feature, which spells the given name “Ernesta de La Cruz.” Other cited accounts use Ernesto de la Cruz. This article uses Ernesto, while recognizing the discrepancy in the record. Birthplace details also vary, so a more specific birthplace is not necessary to understand his career.
Weng Weng’s legacy rests on a vivid contradiction: Agent 00 was a playful spy parody, but the performer behind him became a genuine international cult figure. The 2018 Zero comparison made that earlier image newly visible; it does not explain Weng Weng’s success as much as it points back to the films, the fans, and the still-incomplete story documented by Leavold.
