Beetlejuice: The 1988 Film, 2024 Sequel, and Stage Musical Explained

Beetlejuice is a franchise built around Tim Burton’s 1988 film, its 2024 sequel, and a separate stage musical. Here is how the versions, cast, release dates, tour information, and home-viewing options differ.

Beetlejuice is best understood as a franchise, not one undifferentiated title. The essential starting point is Tim Burton’s 1988 film about a deceased couple trying to reclaim their home, followed by the feature sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024). A separate stage musical adapts the original film with its own book, music, cast, and theatrical history.

The distinctions matter when you are choosing what to watch, buying physical media, checking tour tickets, or comparing the film with the musical.

What is Beetlejuice?

Beetlejuice most commonly refers to Tim Burton’s 1988 comic supernatural film, but the name now covers a larger franchise. The original movie follows Adam and Barbara Maitland, a deceased couple who remain attached to their former home after the Deetz family moves in. When the Maitlands try to call on the unruly supernatural figure Beetlejuice for help, they discover that he is not a controllable or benevolent intermediary.

The franchise has three distinct parts: the original 1988 film, the 2024 feature sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and a stage musical adapted from Burton’s movie. The musical is its own theatrical interpretation, not a film sequel and not simply another version of the 2024 story.

The original 1988 film

Directed by Tim Burton, the first Beetlejuice combines horror imagery, broad comedy, and an imaginative afterlife mythology. Its central joke is also its narrative engine: the ghosts are the ones trying to reclaim their house, while the living newcomers treat the property as something to redesign and transform.

Adam and Barbara Maitland’s problem becomes more complicated when they enlist Beetlejuice. He may be able to disrupt the Deetz family, but his demonic, flamboyant personality makes him a threat to everyone involved. The result is less a conventional haunted-house story than a supernatural domestic farce viewed partly from the ghosts’ point of view.

Principal cast

Actor Role
Michael Keaton Beetlejuice
Geena Davis Barbara Maitland
Alec Baldwin Adam Maitland
Winona Ryder Lydia Deetz

Lydia is the outsider at the center of the living family, while the Maitlands represent the displaced former occupants of the house. Beetlejuice destabilizes both sides: he is summoned as a solution but behaves more like a supernatural con artist whose involvement creates a new crisis.

Why the 1988 movie remains distinctive

  • Death is treated as a domestic inconvenience. The Maitlands are dead, but their immediate concern is still their home and what is happening inside it.
  • The ghosts are not automatically the villains. The film shifts the usual haunted-house perspective by making the deceased couple the characters trying to restore order.
  • Lydia functions as an outsider. Her connection to the supernatural world separates her from the adults around her.
  • Beetlejuice is an anti-helper. He offers access to the afterlife and supernatural power, but no dependable judgment or restraint.

Those descriptions are useful thematic shorthand rather than official plot labels. The film’s lasting identity comes from the collision of its morbid subject matter with irreverent comedy and Burton’s heightened visual imagination.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: the 2024 sequel

The official title of the second feature is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. “Beetlejuice 2” is common informal shorthand, but it is not the film’s formal title.

Tim Burton returned as director. Michael Keaton reprises Beetlejuice, Winona Ryder returns as Lydia Deetz, and Catherine O’Hara returns as Delia Deetz. The new ensemble listed in Warner Bros. Pictures’ official materials includes Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Arthur Conti, and Willem Dafoe.

The film was released internationally beginning September 4, 2024, followed by its United States nationwide theatrical release on September 6, 2024. Those dates are historical, not upcoming release information.

The sequel belongs to the feature-film continuity and should be discussed separately from the stage musical. It is best understood as a follow-up built around returning characters and creative relationships, rather than as a remake of the 1988 movie. If you are writing or shopping for the sequel, check the exact edition and country: home-video availability, physical formats, and digital listings can differ by market.

The Beetlejuice stage musical

The stage musical is based on Burton’s film, but it is a separate adaptation with its own book, score, staging, cast, and production history. Its official production materials foreground Lydia Deetz, a recently deceased couple, and Beetlejuice. That familiar starting point does not make the musical part of the sequel’s film plot.

The musical’s creative credits include Eddie Perfect for music and lyrics, with Scott Brown and Anthony King credited for the book. In other words, the stage version translates the movie’s premise into a live theatrical work rather than reproducing the film scene for scene.

Film or musical: which version should you choose?

If you want… Start with…
The original premise, core characters, and Burton’s film language The 1988 movie
A later feature-film continuation with returning performers Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Live performance, a new score, and a theatrical reinterpretation The stage musical

For the clearest film experience, watch the 1988 original before the 2024 sequel. The musical can be seen independently, although familiarity with the original gives its adaptation choices more context. Fans who already know the film should expect the stage production to emphasize performance, music, live design, and the possibilities of a theater rather than the exact rhythm and visual construction of a movie.

Touring productions and tickets

As of the research snapshot for this article, the official musical site was promoting North American touring under the message “It’s Showtime, North America!” and providing tour-date and ticket pathways. For current cities, performance dates, cast assignments, and Beetlejuice musical tour tickets, use the production’s official tour information first.

Touring information is unusually volatile. A city may have different performance dates, ticket sellers, cast members, venue policies, and inventory from another city. Confirm the venue, date, seating section, fees, and official ticket destination before purchasing. The touring musical should not be confused with a current film screening or with a ticket for the 2024 movie.

How to watch the films

For the best first viewing order

  1. Watch Beetlejuice (1988). This establishes the Maitlands, the Deetz family, Lydia, and the rules—or lack of reliable rules—surrounding Beetlejuice.
  2. Watch Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024). Treat it as the feature-film follow-up, with its returning cast and new ensemble.
  3. See the stage musical separately. Approach it as an adaptation with a distinct score and theatrical structure.

For a physical copy of the original, Beetlejuice 4K Ultra HD is the most direct collector-oriented search. Warner Bros. home-entertainment material identifies the 1988 film as available in 4K Ultra HD and digital formats. Check the listing carefully before buying: confirm that it is the 1988 film, review the included discs and regional compatibility, and distinguish the seller’s current price and stock from permanent edition information.

Streaming availability is a separate question. It changes over time and may differ by country, so the existence of a 4K release does not prove that either film is currently included with a particular streaming service. Check a current, region-specific listing rather than relying on an old availability article.

Fan products and collecting

The safest way to shop for officially licensed Beetlejuice merchandise is to verify the license and retailer on the individual product page. The research for this article identified a Zazzle Beetlejuice storefront described as officially licensed, but that should not be generalized to every marketplace listing using the character’s name. Check the product description, seller identity, licensing language, return policy, and current availability.

A board-game route also exists: USAopoly identifies itself as a publisher of officially licensed pop-culture tabletop games, and its rules documentation identifies a Monopoly: Beetlejuice Edition. Edition names, stock, and seller information can change, so confirm the exact product before treating it as a current recommendation.

The musical creates another collecting option through its music and cast-recording pathways. If you are looking for a Beetlejuice musical cast recording, verify whether the current listing is a digital release, a physical disc, or another format before purchasing. The existence of official music material does not by itself establish that a particular physical edition is in stock.

What should not be conflated?

  • The 1988 movie is not the 2024 movie. Use the full title Beetlejuice Beetlejuice when precision matters.
  • The musical is not the film sequel. It adapts Burton’s original film through a separate book, score, cast, and staging.
  • A theatrical tour is not a permanent production schedule. Dates and ticket inventory must be checked for the specific city.
  • A physical release is not proof of streaming availability. Viewing rights are platform-, country-, and date-specific.
  • Marketplace merchandise is not automatically licensed. Confirm the retailer and product-level licensing information.

Frequently useful context for new viewers

If you only know Beetlejuice as a costume, catchphrase, or character image, the 1988 film supplies the essential context. The character is not the protagonist in a conventional heroic sense. He is the disruptive force summoned into a conflict involving a dead couple, a living family, and a house that becomes the meeting point between the two worlds.

  • Warner Manufacturing

That setup explains why the franchise supports several formats. The movie uses editing, camera movement, and cinematic visual effects; the sequel extends the feature-film world with returning performers and new characters; and the musical turns the same basic supernatural collision into a live event shaped by a score, performers, scenic design, and audience presence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I watch the original Beetlejuice before the 2024 sequel?

The best order is the 1988 film first, followed by Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024). The stage musical can be watched separately because it is its own adaptation of the original film.

Is the Beetlejuice musical a sequel?

No. The musical is a separate stage adaptation based on Burton’s film. It has its own book, score, staging, cast, and production history; it is not the same work as either feature film.

Where can I stream Beetlejuice?

There is no single permanent answer because streaming rights vary by country and change over time. Check a current, region-specific service listing rather than assuming that a physical release means the film is streaming.

The Bottom Line

Start with Tim Burton’s 1988 Beetlejuice, then watch the historically released 2024 sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Treat the stage musical as a separate adaptation, and verify tour dates, streaming rights, physical editions, and merchandise licensing for your country and purchase date.
