Spoilers for the ending of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Lydia and Astrid make it out of the Afterlife and return to the living world, while Lydia chooses to put more time into her relationship with her daughter. But the film leaves Betelgeuse’s ultimate fate open: its final dream sequence hints that he still haunts Lydia’s imagination without confirming his return, a literal future for Astrid, or another movie.
How does Beetlejuice Beetlejuice end?
After escaping the Afterlife, Astrid and Lydia arrive at the church where Lydia is supposed to marry Rory. Betelgeuse shows up with Delia to claim Lydia, and the wedding becomes a confrontation involving Rory, afterlife detective Wolf Jackson and his officers, and Betelgeuse’s ex-wife.

Lydia and Astrid draw a door on the floor and use a sandworm to take Rory and the ex-wife out of the immediate conflict. Then the Deetz women say Betelgeuse’s name three times. He inflates and bursts. The officers begin moving again, and Wolf takes Delia back to the Afterlife. Lydia and Astrid return to the living world.
What happens to Betelgeuse?
His bursting is not proof that he has been permanently destroyed. The film does not settle whether he is gone for good or has been banished once more. It also does not show what happens to him after the church confrontation in a way that resolves his long-term fate.
#1 Best Overall
Director and producer Tim Burton described Betelgeuse as a character who changes little, saying, “There’s not a lot of character depth or growth with Beetlejuice—I mean, he is kind of what he is.” That comment helps explain why the sequel’s emotional development centers more on the Deetz family than on Betelgeuse changing as a person.
Is the baby Betelgeuse sequence real?
No. The closing sequence shows Astrid apparently married and expecting a baby Betelgeuse in Transylvania. The baby’s grotesque antics lead into Lydia waking from a nightmare, but that apparent awakening is also a dream: Lydia wakes again alone in her own bed.

The nested dreams make Betelgeuse’s continued presence feel possible, but they do not establish that Astrid is pregnant, that she married, or that the events shown are a literal preview of the family’s future. The clearest reading is that Betelgeuse remains an intrusion in Lydia’s thoughts, not that the film has confirmed a new chapter.
What changes for Lydia and Astrid?
The crisis gives Lydia and Astrid a reason to act together after a period of distance. That shift becomes explicit when Lydia says she is stepping away from her ghost-host television show to spend more time with Astrid. The ending’s firmest resolution is therefore relational: Lydia chooses her daughter over continuing her career as a paranormal television personality.

The film’s official synopsis frames the story around three generations of Deetz women returning to Winter River after a family tragedy, with Astrid discovering the town model and its portal to the Afterlife. Screenwriters Alfred Gough and Miles Millar told TheWrap that they and Burton built the story around three generations of Deetz women rather than relying on earlier sequel drafts. Burton described the project as “basically revisiting the Deetz family 35 years later and seeing where they are.”
Where does the ending leave Delia and the family?
Delia is taken back to the Afterlife by Wolf after the church confrontation. Lydia and Astrid, by contrast, make it back to the living world. The film closes on Lydia’s choice to spend more time with Astrid, but the dream coda prevents the final image from serving as a straightforward account of what the family’s life will look like next.
Rank #4
Does the ending confirm Beetlejuice 3?
No. The dream suggests that Betelgeuse may continue to occupy Lydia’s imagination, but it is not confirmation of a third film or a definite next chapter for the Deetz family. The ending resolves the immediate crisis and advances Lydia and Astrid’s relationship while leaving Betelgeuse’s final fate deliberately unsettled.
