Legacy.com reported that he was 67 and had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2006. Other contemporary coverage gave his age as 68 and attributed heart complications as the reported cause of death; the available reporting does not establish that Parkinson’s caused his death.
What is known about Newman’s death
Legacy.com’s obituary, published October 23, 2024, says Newman died October 20, 2024, at age 67. TVLine’s October 22 report also gives October 20 as the date of death, but says he was 68. The reports conflict on his age, and the available accounts do not resolve the discrepancy. Legacy.com’s obituary and TVLine’s report document the differing figures.
Newman was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2006, about 18 years before his death. TVLine attributed heart complications as the reported cause of death to his friend Matthew Felker, citing People. That attribution should be kept distinct from Newman’s Parkinson’s diagnosis: the reporting does not say Parkinson’s caused his death.
How a real lifeguard became a “Baywatch” cast member
Newman’s work as a lifeguard and firefighter informed his role as Mike “Newmie” Newman. According to TVLine, he guest-starred in the April 1989 pilot, recurred through season six, then joined the main cast for seasons seven through ten. TVLine reports that he appeared in 150 episodes and had worked as an L.A. County lifeguard for more than 20 years.

Legacy’s obituary describes him as connected to the show from its beginnings. He helped lend practical credibility to lifeguard scenes and, according to the obituary, contributed to an early pitch with a teaser tape filmed on Santa Monica beach. His path from working lifeguard to recurring character and, eventually, main cast member made the line between his real work and the television role unusually direct.
Newman’s practical contribution to the show
In a 2014 interview with The Daily Mail, as reproduced in Legacy’s obituary, Newman recalled how the writers consulted him on the details of rescue scenes:

“The head writer on the show would call me up and say: ‘Ok Mike, what kind of equipment would we use in this scene? What kind of radio equipment would the actors use? What would the traffic sequence be? What would they be saying on the radio?’ And I would dictate all this information to these guys and they would repay me by writing me some good stuff in the show.”
The account captures a specific aspect of Newman’s contribution: he brought working knowledge of lifeguard equipment and radio procedure to the scripts, while his character became part of the series over time.

His Parkinson’s diagnosis and public perspective
