What happens in the final scene?
On the water tower, AJ decides that his own survival matters more than Tess’s. He pushes her off the edge, but the Mother catches her during the fall. Tess shoots the Mother, who dies, and leaves the neighborhood alive as morning breaks.

The Mother’s catch is not a sign that she has become safe or that her actions are ordinary care. It echoes the warped caregiving she has learned from a maternity VHS tape and from the violence of her upbringing. Her final act is protective, but it does not undo the danger she has posed.
Who survives—and what happens to each character?

Why does AJ push Tess off the tower?
AJ’s act is a choice to save himself at Tess’s expense. Earlier, he has appeared remorseful, but when the danger becomes immediate, he abandons her. That contrast makes his apparent accountability unreliable: he can acknowledge harm when it costs him little, but does not sustain that responsibility when his life is at stake.

Against her better judgment, she decides to spend the evening, but soon discovers that there’s a lot more to fear than an unexpected house guest.
Is the Mother Tess’s mother?
No. The Mother is descended from women Frank abducted and abused. Writer-director Zach Cregger said Frank is “probably her father and grandfather”: he fathered children with captive women and then children with those descendants. The story gives the broad, horrifying outline of her ancestry, not a fully documented family tree.
The Mother’s behavior is shaped by a life in captivity. Cregger described her world as limited to “this videotape of smothering mother love” and the violence her father showed her. Her attempts at caregiving imitate what she has watched, twisted by the abuse that formed her. This helps explain her behavior without excusing the harm she causes.

Who is the real monster in Barbarian?
The Mother is the most visible physical threat, but the film’s history points to Frank as the source of the horror underground. He kidnapped, raped, and impregnated women over decades; the Mother was born into that captivity. Her violence is terrifying, but the film presents her as a product of Frank’s crimes, not as their origin.
AJ adds a different kind of menace. He is not responsible for the Mother’s creation, but his choice to sacrifice Tess exposes a cruelty that has little to do with physical monstrosity. Cregger has challenged viewers to reconsider who the “barbarian” is; the ending makes that a moral question about who inflicts harm and who accepts responsibility for it.
What does Tess’s survival mean?
Tess repeatedly risks herself to help other people, including AJ. Her survival lets viewers read her departure as a break from a pattern of putting others first at her own expense. Georgina Campbell, who plays Tess, interpreted the ending as Tess gaining agency and escaping a pattern she had repeated.
That is an interpretation of her arc, not proof that Tess is healed or permanently safe. What the plot establishes is narrower: she survives the tower confrontation and leaves the neighborhood.

What remains unexplained?
- The double booking: Tess and Keith arrive at the same rental, but the film never explains why. The rental company’s denial does not establish that it was complicit; claims that the booking mix-up involved an accomplice or deliberate scheme remain speculation.
- Frank’s motives: His crimes are clear, but the film does not settle why he abducted women or kept the Mother alive. Cregger said that having descendants may not have been Frank’s goal and that he did not know why Frank kept her.
- The tunnels: Cregger said, “In my mind, he built them.” That is his interpretation, not an on-screen certainty.
