Bad Monkey has a fast-talking investigator, a murder case and plenty of Florida trouble—but it is not a Vince Vaughn version of Reacher. Apple classifies the 10-episode series as comedy/drama, and its chief appeal is Vaughn’s wisecracking performance amid an eccentric crime story. That comic tone is also its main risk: viewers who want a tightly focused, action-led thriller may find the show’s quirks and detours wear thin.
What is Bad Monkey about?
Vince Vaughn plays Andrew Yancy, a former Miami police officer who has been pushed into working as a health inspector in the Florida Keys. When tourists pull a human arm from the water, Yancy suspects murder and sees an opportunity to prove himself—and perhaps get back into police work. The case leads into a world of greed, corruption and eccentric characters in South Florida and the Bahamas.
The series adapts Carl Hiaasen’s novel Bad Monkey. Apple’s announcement named Natalie Martinez, Jodie Turner-Smith, Michelle Monaghan, Rob Delaney, Meredith Hagner and John Ortiz among the ensemble cast. The monkey in the title is part of the show’s offbeat world, not a promise that this is a conventional detective procedural.
Is Bad Monkey like Reacher?
Only in the broad sense that both put a distinctive lead character into a crime story. The comparison stops being useful if it suggests the same kind of show. Apple labels Bad Monkey comedy/drama; its engine is an eccentric mystery and its lead solves problems with talk, attitude and improvisation. It is not presented as a straight action thriller.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That difference shapes the viewing experience: the comedy, supporting characters and Florida setting are central attractions, rather than seasoning around an action-first plot. If what you want is a wry crime series with a flawed investigator, the premise may appeal. If you are looking specifically for relentless action, the title is a poor match.
What works—and what may not
Vaughn is a natural fit for Yancy
In her August 13, 2024, TIME review, TV critic Judy Berman praised Vaughn’s ease in the wisecracking lead role, saying he fits it so comfortably that the performance nearly makes Yancy seem like an actual human being. That is the clearest reason to try the series: Vaughn’s rapid-fire comic persona suits a character who is both a nuisance and a capable investigator.

Berman also singled out Jodie Turner-Smith, Rob Delaney and Michelle Monaghan for strong supporting performances. The ensemble helps give the story its comic, unpredictable texture rather than making Yancy’s case feel like a lone-hero action vehicle.
The comedy can crowd the mystery
Berman’s reservation is that the show can be as enamored of its protagonist as he is of himself. She found its relentless quirk exhausting, and argued that the narration and 10-episode length weigh on the crime story. She also criticized how some characters are developed and treated. Those are the judgments of one named critic, not a measure of audience consensus, but they point to the show’s key trade-off: its oddball style is the attraction and, at times, the drag.
