Barbara Eden’s reflections on her son Matthew Ansara’s death were reported in a 2021 interview marking 20 years since he died. Matthew, Eden and actor Michael Ansara’s only child, was 35. Later reporting described his death as an accidental heroin overdose; Eden spoke about grief, guilt, and the difficulty of recognizing addiction in a child.

What happened to Barbara Eden’s son?

Matthew Michael Ansara was found dead in a car in Monrovia, California, in June 2001, at age 35. A contemporaneous Los Angeles Times report dated June 27, 2001 said an autopsy was scheduled; that report did not yet establish the cause of death.

In January 2002, ABC News reported that Matthew had died of a heroin overdose. A 2021 Yahoo Entertainment republication of a People report later characterized the overdose as accidental and heroin-related, and said he died on June 25, 2001. The Television Academy also identifies Matthew as Eden’s only child and says he died in 2001 at age 35.

What did Barbara Eden say about his death?

In a January 2002 CNN interview, Eden said Matthew had been clean and sober for more than a year before his death. Asked whether she was shocked, she said she was: he had been fighting and had been sober for that period. The transcript captures her recollection, not a clinical account of Matthew’s recovery or a complete chronology of his substance use.

Two decades later, in the People interview republished by Yahoo in October 2021, Eden described the pain of losing him and the guilt and anger she experienced. She also spoke about how difficult it could be to tell drug use apart from behavior that might seem like ordinary teenage conduct. Her words about the person she knew during sober periods were affectionate: “When Matthew was clean and sober, he was such a beautiful human being, inside and out.”

Reflecting on addiction’s impact, Eden said, “Drugs are inexplicable. It’s so frustrating.” The comments convey her experience as a mother; they should not be read as a medical explanation of addiction or as proof of details beyond what the reporting attributes to her.

What advice did Eden offer other parents?

Eden urged parents to educate themselves and pay attention to what is happening in their children’s lives. She also described finding hope through conversations with other parents affected by addiction, and said, “Ultimately it’s up to them, but there’s hope.” That was her personal advice and expression of hope, not a replacement for professional support or guidance.

Where to read more about Eden’s life

Eden’s memoir, Jeannie Out of the Bottle, was discussed during a July 2002 CNN interview. It offers a broader account of her life, though the source establishes only that the memoir was mentioned in that conversation; it does not present the book as addiction guidance.
