What is Baramulla about?
Netflix describes the film as a story about a police officer investigating child kidnappings while supernatural events threaten his family and town. Scroll reviewer Nandini Ramnath places the story in 2016: children disappear when white tulips appear, and DSP Ridwaan moves with his family to Baramulla. Their new house is marked by strange sounds and a sensed presence.
#1 Best Overall
- Factory sealed DVD
Ramnath reads the film as social horror, using djinn lore and unexplained events to engage with past trauma. The film’s treatment of Kashmir’s historical and political trauma is part of its narrative framing, rather than a neutral account of history.
What does Scroll’s review say?
Ramnath praises the film’s visual atmosphere: “The good-looking movie extracts as much eeriness as possible from the snow-covered landscape and traditional wooden houses.” She also finds that the extended climax eventually takes shape.

The reservations are substantial. The investigation feels weak, family behavior and characterization are inconsistent, and the scares are limited. The result, in this review, is stronger as an atmospheric story than as a sustained suspense or horror experience.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Baramulla worth watching?
It is a better fit for viewers drawn to snowy settings, supernatural folklore and horror tied to social or historical trauma than for those seeking frequent scares or a tightly driven police investigation. The setting and late payoff are the review’s clearest strengths; the uneven characters and limited scare factor are its main cautions.
