For her 2023 short film The Heart, which screened at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, she was credited as Malia Ann.
The available evidence points to a professional-name decision—not a confirmed legal name change. Obama described the choice as consistent with his daughters’ wish to build their own identities rather than automatically relying on the Obama name.
What Barack Obama said about “Malia Ann”
Obama discussed Malia’s professional name during an episode of The Pivot Podcast published on October 29, 2024. His tone was affectionate and lightly amused, rather than angry or disapproving.
According to coverage of the interview, Obama said that both of his daughters have been sensitive and stubborn about using the family name in their own work. He questioned whether leaving “Obama” off the credit could truly keep her identity private, noting that audiences would eventually discover who she was.

His broader point was about parenting children who want to make their own way. The daughters grew up in one of the most recognizable families in the world, but they did not choose the intense public attention that came with their father’s presidency. Obama said they deserved space to develop independently rather than being defined automatically by their parents.
Malia’s credit on The Heart
The immediate reason for the discussion was Malia’s filmmaking debut. The official Sundance program listed Malia Ann as both the director and screenwriter of The Heart, an 18-minute short film from the United States.
The story follows a lonely man grieving his mother after an argument involving groceries and an unusual request in her will. The film starred Tunde Adebimpe and LaTonya Borsay, with Ayesha Nadarajah listed as producer.
The Heart screened at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival after being made in 2023. It should be described as a short-film festival entry—not as a feature-length theatrical release. The available research also does not establish a current commercial streaming, rental, or purchase option for the film. Its festival availability has expired, so readers should be cautious about claims that it is currently available to watch online.
Why she left “Obama” off the credit
Malia’s choice can reasonably be understood as an attempt to let the work make its first impression before the family connection takes over the conversation. A credit reading “Malia Obama” would immediately identify her as the former president’s daughter, potentially shifting attention from the film to her background.
That does not mean she rejected her family or tried to erase the Obama name from every part of her life. The evidence establishes a name used on a professional filmmaking credit. It does not establish that she legally changed her name, nor that she stopped using “Obama” in other contexts.
Obama acknowledged the practical limitation of the decision: because Malia is a prominent public figure, viewers could still connect “Malia Ann” to the Obama family. Even so, he appeared to understand the motivation. The choice gave her at least some control over how the film was introduced and discussed.

Michelle Obama later offered more context
Michelle Obama addressed the decision later, in June 2025, during an appearance on Sibling Revelry, the podcast hosted by Kate and Oliver Hudson.
As reported by ABC News, Michelle said that she and Barack respected Malia’s decision and understood her desire to establish her own identity. She also recognized that the public would still work out her connection to the Obama family, but said the family respected her effort to find her own path.
Michelle placed the decision within a larger period of independence for both daughters as young adults. Her comments reinforced the picture created by Barack’s earlier interview: the parents may have recognized the limits of separating from such a famous surname, but they did not portray Malia’s professional choice as a family conflict.
The important distinction: professional name versus legal name
“Malia dropped her last name” is a convenient headline, but it can imply more than the reporting confirms. The documented fact is narrower:
- Malia used the name Malia Ann for The Heart.
- Sundance listed her under that name as the film’s director and screenwriter.
- Barack Obama discussed her wish not to lean on the family surname professionally.
- Michelle Obama later said the family respected the decision.
- No source in the reviewed evidence confirms a legal name change.
For that reason, the most accurate description is that Malia left “Obama” off her filmmaking credit or used “Malia Ann” professionally. It is not accurate to claim, without additional documentation, that she legally abandoned the Obama surname or no longer uses it in every setting.

Why the decision drew attention
The choice attracted attention because it sits at the intersection of celebrity, family privacy, and professional independence. Malia was raised in the White House and has been publicly known since childhood. A conventional credit would have made her parentage part of the film’s marketing before audiences had encountered her work.
Using “Malia Ann” could not remove that history, but it could create a small boundary between her public family identity and her work as a writer and director. Obama’s reaction suggested that he saw the decision as part of the normal push for independence that parents often face—made more complicated by the extraordinary visibility of the Obama family.
