Barack and Michelle Obama joked about divorce rumors during a joint appearance on Michelle Obama’s podcast, IMO, on July 16, 2025. Michelle said she had never thought about leaving her husband, while acknowledging that their marriage had included difficult times. The rumors had grown after she skipped several high-profile public events, but absence from those events was not evidence of a separation.
Michelle Obama explained why she skipped some public events
Speculation about the Obamas’ marriage grew after Michelle Obama did not attend several prominent events alongside Barack Obama, including former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and President Donald Trump’s second inauguration. The Washington Post reported that she had described choosing what she wanted to do rather than what she felt obliged to do after years of public and family responsibilities. She said people assumed the couple was divorcing instead of considering that she was making her own choices. The Washington Post’s April 10, 2025 report covered those comments.
In a June 2025 interview excerpt from NPR’s Wild Card, published by Georgia Public Broadcasting, Michelle Obama described how the absence of visible outings with her husband fed the speculation: “The fact that people don’t see me going out on a date with my husband sparks rumors of the end of our marriage.” She also said she did not regret her decisions not to attend events at that time. These are her explanations of her choices; they do not establish a single motive for every absence. Read the Georgia Public Broadcasting interview excerpt.
What the Obamas said on the podcast
Barack Obama joined Michelle Obama and her brother, Craig Robinson, on IMO on July 16, 2025. Robinson opened the exchange by jokingly asking whether the couple liked each other. Michelle replied, “Oh yeah, the rumor mill.” Barack added, “She took me back. It was touch and go for a while.” When Robinson said it was nice to have them in the same room, Michelle joked that when they were apart, people thought they were divorced.

Michelle then spoke more directly about their relationship: “There hasn’t been one moment in our marriage where I thought about quittin’ my man. And we’ve had some really hard times.” She added that they had shared many fun times and adventures, and that she had become a better person because of her husband. Those remarks were made during the humorous exchange, but they also directly answer what she said about the rumors. ABC News reported the exchange and quoted her wording as “quittin’”. CBS News also covered the episode, rendering the phrase as “quitting my man.”
What the public comments do—and do not—show
The podcast appearance and the couple’s remarks are documented public statements. The earlier event absences and Michelle Obama’s explanations are also part of the public record. Neither the rumors nor the fact that the couple was not seen together at particular events establish that they separated. ABC News reported that the Obamas married in 1992; that chronology provides context, not evidence about private circumstances.
