Ballad of a Small Player is a 2025 Netflix film about Lord Doyle (Colin Farrell), a disgraced Englishman hiding in Macao while drinking, gambling and running from the consequences of his past. Directed by Edward Berger and adapted by Rowan Joffe from Lawrence Osborne’s 2014 novel, it combines an addiction drama with a crime thriller, uneasy romance and ghost story.
Doyle’s life is narrowing around baccarat tables, hotel rooms and mounting debts. His apparent escape route is Dao Ming (Fala Chen), a mysterious casino employee who may offer him money, love or a chance at salvation. At the same time, private investigator Cynthia Blithe (Tilda Swinton) is pursuing him. The film’s central question is less “Will Doyle win?” than whether a man who has survived through false identities and compulsive risk can recover any genuine sense of self.

What is Ballad of a Small Player about?
Lord Doyle is an English fugitive living under an aristocratic-sounding identity in Macao. He has money, status and charm only in fragments: enough to maintain the appearance of a gentleman, but not enough to stop his debts and self-destructive habits from catching up with him. He drinks heavily and returns repeatedly to the casino, placing his remaining resources at risk in the hope that one more win will solve the problems created by the previous one.

His encounter with Dao Ming changes the shape of the story. She is not simply a romantic interest or a convenient guide through the casino world. Her connection with Doyle carries emotional, moral and potentially supernatural implications. The film keeps her identity and motives deliberately uncertain, allowing her to function as both a possible lifeline and another challenge to Doyle’s unreliable understanding of reality.
Cynthia Blithe provides the pressure from Doyle’s past. As a private investigator determined to confront him, she represents the consequences he has tried to outrun. The resulting tension is not a conventional detective puzzle alone. Doyle is being pursued externally, but he is also being forced to confront the person beneath his invented name, expensive clothes and cultivated social performance.
This is a spoiler-light account of the setup. The film’s official synopsis leaves important details about the pursuit, Dao Ming and the story’s uncanny elements open, and those uncertainties are part of the intended experience.
Why the film is more than a gambling thriller
Gambling supplies the film’s visible action, but baccarat is not presented as a strategy lesson or a route to reliable wealth. For Doyle, the table is a machine for postponing reality. Each hand offers the fantasy that chance can erase debt, restore status and create a new identity. Losing does not necessarily make him stop; it gives him another reason to believe that the next decision will be different.

He is not merely a clever gambler facing a difficult streak. He is a man using risk to avoid accountability and using performance to avoid knowing himself. His drinking, gambling and constant movement through hotels and casinos form a cycle in which escape becomes indistinguishable from imprisonment.
Macao is Doyle’s psychological environment
The film’s Macao is not a generic backdrop for casino action. Berger and his production team frame the city as a collision of tropical vegetation, Portuguese colonial architecture, older neighborhoods and vast Vegas-style casino resorts. The casinos and hotels are designed like self-contained cities: artificial, air-conditioned and almost too large to comprehend from inside.
That contrast mirrors Doyle’s predicament. He hides inside controlled environments built to keep people spending, moving and looking forward to the next spectacle. Outside those spaces are older streets, local traditions and a physical landscape that feels less manufactured. The more Doyle tries to disappear into the casino world, the more the city’s contrasts expose the instability of his invented life.
Berger has described Macao as a place that can feel like a copy of other places, which makes it an especially appropriate setting for a character who has copied and performed different versions of himself. The city’s grandeur is real, but it is also theatrical. So is Doyle’s identity.

- Addiction drama: Doyle’s gambling and drinking shape the plot and reveal his inability to break a destructive pattern.
- Crime thriller: His hidden past and Cynthia Blithe’s investigation create the threat of exposure and reckoning.
- Romantic drama: Dao Ming offers the possibility of intimacy, but the film does not treat her as a straightforward rescuer.
- Psychological film: Doyle’s perception, memory and self-invention are constantly under pressure.
- Ghost story: Supernatural imagery and material associated with the Festival of the Hungry Ghosts add uncertainty to the film’s reality.
Berger has described a tone that moves between pop, opera, drama, humor and supernatural storytelling. The result is intentionally unstable. A scene can feel funny, glamorous or romantic and then acquire a disturbing edge. Rather than presenting the supernatural as a separate set of fantasy rules, the film uses it to deepen the uncertainty surrounding Doyle’s mind and moral condition.
Edward Berger’s visual approach
The film reunites Berger with several major collaborators from All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave, including cinematographer James Friend and composer Volker Bertelmann. The wider creative team includes production designer Jonathan Houlding, costume designer Lisy Christl, makeup and hair designer Heike Merker and editor Nick Emerson.
Berger’s camera is designed to experience Doyle’s instability rather than calmly observe it. The director has described fast movement, camera motion that follows Farrell, unusual orientations and imagery involving underwater or upside-down perspectives. These choices externalize Doyle’s compulsive mental state: the world seems to tilt, accelerate or become submerged along with him.
Recommended Free Tools
This makes the movie a deliberately colorful and kinetic departure from the more austere reputation associated with Berger’s recent work. The casino’s lights, costumes, architecture and music are not decoration applied to a conventional thriller. They are part of the film’s argument that Doyle is living inside a heightened performance from which he may no longer be able to escape.
Characters and performances
Colin Farrell as Lord Doyle
Farrell’s Doyle is simultaneously charismatic and repellent. He knows how to perform refinement, but the performance is fraying. His aristocratic-sounding name and social manner suggest a man trying to preserve a class identity after the material and moral foundations of that identity have collapsed.
The role requires Doyle to remain watchable even when his decisions are destructive. His charm is part of the problem: it helps him evade consequences, attract attention and persuade himself that he is still in control. Farrell’s central task is to show the fear and emptiness beneath that surface without turning Doyle into a simple victim.
Fala Chen as Dao Ming
Dao Ming is the film’s most important source of uncertainty. She appears to offer Doyle a different direction, but her role cannot be reduced to a conventional love interest. Her relationship with him is connected to the film’s questions about identity, salvation and the boundary between the psychological and supernatural.

Tilda Swinton as Cynthia Blithe
As the private investigator pursuing Doyle, Cynthia embodies the past that he has tried to convert into a story about reinvention. Her presence prevents the film from becoming only an inward spiral inside the casino. Doyle may want to treat his new life as a clean beginning, but Cynthia insists that earlier actions still have weight.
Deanie Ip and Alex Jennings complete the principal cast in supporting roles listed by Netflix’s official film materials.

How the film relates to Lawrence Osborne’s novel
The film is adapted from Lawrence Osborne’s 2014 novel The Ballad of a Small Player. The book follows Doyle, an English lawyer who has fled prosecution and become trapped in a cycle of alcohol, hotel rooms, baccarat and obsession. It also includes Dao-Ming, the possibility of money and love, and an increasingly unstable boundary between ordinary reality and something more uncanny.
The adaptation preserves the central architecture: Doyle, Macao’s casinos, baccarat, addiction, Dao Ming, a pursuer linked to his past and a supernatural edge. The major difference is one of emphasis. Osborne’s novel can explore Doyle’s interior life through prose, while Berger translates that instability into movement, color, sound, architecture and distorted visual perspective.
You do not need to read the novel before watching the film. The movie is designed to stand on its own, and its kinetic style gives the material a distinct identity. Reading the book afterward may be the better order for viewers who want to compare Doyle’s inner narration with Berger’s more external, sensory approach.
Read the source novel
The Ballad of a Small Player by Lawrence Osborne is the clearest companion to the film. The publisher lists a 272-page paperback, an ebook edition and an audiobook download of approximately 7 hours and 5 minutes. It is a novel about risk, class, obsession, addiction, love and eerie suspense—not a baccarat manual or a gambling strategy guide.
Should you watch Ballad of a Small Player?
Watch it if you want a visually ambitious character film that treats a casino thriller as a study of compulsion and self-deception. It is especially suited to viewers who enjoy morally compromised protagonists, unreliable atmospheres, literary adaptations and films that refuse to settle into one genre.
It may be a poor fit if you are looking for a realistic gambling procedural, a straightforward crime investigation or a conventional romance with clear emotional resolutions. The film’s supernatural dimension is intentionally ambiguous, and its heightened style may be more important to the experience than the mechanics of Doyle’s gambling.
Most importantly, do not approach it as a guide to baccarat. The game is a dramatic symbol of Doyle’s relationship with chance, not a practical system for managing money or defeating a casino.

Spoiler-light interpretation: what the film is really about
At its core, Ballad of a Small Player is about the difference between reinvention and escape. Doyle changes his surroundings, name and social presentation, but those changes do not automatically create a new person. The casino offers a perfect environment for that illusion: every hand promises a reset, and every loss can be explained as temporary.

Cynthia represents the past that cannot be outplayed. Macao itself holds the two forces together: dazzling artificial spaces on one side, and older, more rooted worlds on the other.
That is why the film’s ghost-story elements matter even for viewers who do not read them literally. The ghosts, rituals and uncanny images give form to the things Doyle refuses to face. Whether the threat is supernatural, psychological or both, the result is the same: his carefully staged escape becomes impossible to maintain.
