Baby Reindeer is a seven-episode Netflix limited series written by and starring comedian Richard Gadd. Adapted from his one-man stage play, it follows struggling comedian Donny Dunn and the complicated relationship with Martha that forces him to confront buried trauma. Gadd has said the story draws on personal experience, but the series is a dramatization—not a finding of fact about real people.
What is Baby Reindeer about?
Donny Dunn, played by Gadd, is a struggling comedian who works as a bartender. After he shows Martha, played by Jessica Gunning, an act of kindness, her growing fixation disrupts his life and brings painful experiences back to the surface. Netflix describes the relationship as layered, with the story exploring both Martha’s stalking and Donny’s trauma. Netflix’s series guide presents the premise without reducing it to a simple victim-and-villain story.
Gadd has described the mix of comedy and darker drama as deliberate. In Netflix’s account, he said, “I think life is a comedy-drama,” and described the series as a blend of “light and shade.” He also said he wanted to portray stalking with human complexity rather than rely on a sensationalized, familiar image of a threatening stranger. These are the creator’s artistic aims, not clinical claims about stalking.
Is Baby Reindeer a true story?
Gadd has described the series as rooted in his personal experience, while emphasizing that it is a messy, morally complicated story. In his first-person essay for About Netflix, he says he wanted an honest account that acknowledged his own mistakes and discomfort as well as his experiences of sexual violence. That is Gadd’s account of his inspiration; it does not independently verify every event portrayed on screen.

The characters and events are dramatized. The series’ “based on a true story” framing should not be treated as proof that a particular real person is Martha or that every scene happened as shown. That distinction matters especially because the story led to public speculation about identities and a defamation lawsuit.
How did the series grow out of Gadd’s stage play?
Gadd debuted his one-man Baby Reindeer at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2019, after the period of stalking he describes. He has said that the stage version drew on his experience of receiving voicemails, imagining them layered with projected light. Netflix commissioned the television series in April 2021, and the adaptation expanded the story for the screen. Gadd’s account of the play’s origins and his approach appears in his first-person essay; Netflix also identifies the series as an adaptation of his one-man play.

What is the lawsuit about?
In June 2024, Fiona Harvey filed a U.S. defamation lawsuit against Netflix, seeking at least $170 million, according to the Associated Press report on the filing. The AP described allegations made in Harvey’s complaint and Netflix’s response that it intended to defend the case and stand by Gadd’s right to tell his story.

Those are the positions reported at the time of filing, not judicial findings. The cited report does not establish the current status or outcome of the case. Nor does the existence of the suit establish that Harvey was the model for Martha. A fictionalized portrayal, a litigant’s claims, and facts established in court are different things.
Who made the series, and where can you watch it?
Gadd created, wrote and stars in the series as Donny Dunn; Jessica Gunning plays Martha.
