Their history includes a cat carried on sticks, balloons released into the sky, a dangerous encounter with an airplane, and modern wind and safety controls shaped by a serious accident.
1. The parade came before its balloons
The first Macy’s Thanksgiving parade took place on November 27, 1924. The giant character balloons arrived three years later, so they were not part of the parade from the beginning. The Library of Congress traces the early history, while Macy’s describes the event’s centennial plans in its 2026 announcement.
2. Felix the Cat was the first character balloon
Felix the Cat made his debut in 1927 as the parade’s first character balloon. The Library of Congress says volunteers carried him on sticks; helium-filled balloons followed the next year. Macy’s has announced Felix will return for the 100th parade in 2026, a future plan as of October 2026—not a completed appearance.
3. The first balloons were not helium-filled
The early Felix balloon was supported by volunteers holding sticks. Macy’s says helium-filled balloons were introduced in 1928. That shift changed the spectacle from a large carried figure into the tethered, airborne parade balloons audiences recognize today.

4. Macy’s used to let the balloons go
At first, there was no way to deflate the balloons after the parade, so they were released and eventually popped as they rose, according to the Library of Congress. In 1928, valves let helium escape gradually. Macy’s attached return addresses and offered rewards, hoping that people who found the balloons would send them back.
5. A balloon once tangled with an airplane
The release tradition had dangerous consequences. The Library of Congress recounts that balloons landed in the East River or drifted out to sea; in 1932, a stray balloon wrapped around an airplane wing and sent the aircraft into a tailspin. The account says Macy’s released no balloons after that incident. It does not establish further details about the aircraft or any injuries, so claims beyond that account should be treated cautiously.

6. The Blue Hippopotamus went missing
Macy’s says every balloon from the 1931 parade was accounted for except the Blue Hippopotamus, last seen soaring beyond the Empire State Building. The company has announced that the character is planned to return for the 2026 centennial parade. That is an announced future appearance, not confirmation that it has happened.
7. A 1997 accident led to new safety rules
A serious accident prompted New York City to set out controls for the parade balloons. In a 1998 mayoral release, the city said part of a lamppost had been severed by a balloon the previous year, seriously injuring a spectator. The city’s announcement included limits on balloon dimensions and wind, weather monitoring, support vehicles, emergency panels, and trained crews.

What the city announced in 1998

Those are the figures and measures in the city’s 1998 announcement; they should not automatically be treated as the current requirements. An Associated Press report on the 2025 parade gave a different gust threshold: full-size balloons could not fly if sustained winds exceeded 23 mph or gusts exceeded 35 mph. The difference between 34 and 35 mph is present in the two sources, so it should not be silently combined. Check current city requirements for the parade in question.
8. Making a balloon takes months
Macy’s said in a 2024 announcement that its Studios artisans and partners collaborate on character balloons, and that bringing the creations to life takes an average of more than six months. The figure describes the average creative process; it does not specify a uniform construction schedule for every balloon.

9. Inflation is an overnight-scale operation
For the 2025 parade, the Associated Press reported that about 100 balloon technicians and volunteers worked on inflation, which took about eight hours. Those are figures for that year’s preparation, not a guaranteed crew size or duration for every parade. Macy’s has not provided a general balloon volume or helium-consumption figure in the cited information.
10. The lineup is not fixed
Macy’s 2025 release for the 99th parade named four new featured character balloons: Buzz Lightyear, PAC-MAN, Shrek’s Onion Carriage, and Mario. It separately listed Derpy Tiger as a mid-sized balloon and Sussie as a balloonicle. The distinctions matter: the release did not describe all six as the same kind of balloon, and the 2025 lineup should not be mistaken for the 2026 one.

11. The parade’s “100th” arrives in 2026
Macy’s calls the 2026 event its 100th parade, even though the first parade was in 1924. The parade was canceled from 1942 through 1944 during World War II, so the centennial wording refers to the 100th march rather than 100 calendar years of annual parades. Macy’s 2025 release and its 2026 announcement describe that count and the centennial plans.
12. Wind can keep a balloon on the ground
Large balloons are subject to wind restrictions because they can be difficult to control in hazardous conditions. The sources show why exact thresholds need a date and attribution: New York City’s 1998 release listed 23 mph sustained winds or 34 mph gusts, while AP’s 2025 account reported 23 mph sustained or 35 mph gusts. Neither figure should be presented as a universal rule for future parades; the current city requirements determine what can fly.
