Donny has not literally become Martha, and Baby Reindeer does not confirm that he will become a stalker. The ending shows something subtler: Donny recognizing the compulsive attachment, shame, and emotional dependency that connect his experience to Martha’s without making them identical or morally equivalent.

Spoilers for all seven episodes of Baby Reindeer.

Donny has not literally become Martha, and the series does not confirm that he will become a stalker. The ending is more unsettling and more psychologically precise than that. Donny begins to recognize something of Martha’s compulsive attachment in himself: the way a person can become fixated on another human being, use that attachment to escape unbearable feelings, and remain emotionally tied to people who have harmed them.

The final scene places Donny in Martha’s position for a moment. He is vulnerable, unable to pay for a drink, and dependent on a stranger’s small act of kindness. That reversal does not make Donny and Martha morally equivalent. It shows that he has started to understand the emotional mechanism behind his own destructive attachments.

What happens at the end of Baby Reindeer?

In Episode 7, Donny’s career appears to be gaining momentum. He performs material drawn from his stalking and abuse, and the audience responds positively. The success gives him a sense of direction, but it does not mean that he has processed what happened to him.

Martha then threatens to tell Donny’s parents that he was sexually assaulted. Rather than allowing Martha to reveal the secret, Donny tells his parents himself. He discloses that he was raped and that he is bisexual. The disclosure is painful, but Donny describes the following day as a new beginning.

Martha is eventually arrested. She pleads guilty, receives a nine-month prison sentence, and is given a five-year restraining order. This brings practical and legal consequences for her behavior. It does not give Donny the emotional resolution that a conventional thriller ending might promise.

The finale then jumps forward. Donny is sitting at a bar when he opens a voicemail from Martha that had been left in his “Not Listened To” folder. She explains the origin of the nickname “baby reindeer.” Afterward, Donny begins to cry, realizes that he has forgotten his wallet, and accepts a drink from the bartender.

The story ends there—not with proof that Donny will repeat Martha’s crimes, but with the disturbing suggestion that understanding his trauma will be a long process rather than a single moment of liberation.

Why does Martha call Donny “baby reindeer”?

In the voicemail, Martha says that she had a stuffed baby reindeer as a child. The toy comforted her during conflict at home, and she says that Donny resembles it. For Martha, the nickname is connected to safety, childhood vulnerability, and escape.

That explanation is important because it shows that Martha is not relating to Donny as an ordinary, separate person. She is attaching an old emotional need to him. Donny becomes, in her mind, a replacement for a comforting object from childhood.

The nickname is therefore not simply an eccentric term of endearment or evidence of ordinary romantic interest. It reveals the mechanism of Martha’s fixation: she has turned Donny into an emotionally loaded figure in a private fantasy. That helps explain the intensity of her attachment, but it does not excuse the stalking, harassment, or harm she causes.

The voicemail also changes how the title functions. “Baby reindeer” describes Martha’s personal projection onto Donny, but it also becomes a symbol of how people can transform one another into objects that serve their emotional needs.

Has Donny become Martha?

No—not literally. The series does not establish that Donny will stalk someone, recreate Martha’s behavior, or become identical to her. Saying that he “becomes Martha” is a possible thematic interpretation, not a confirmed plot development.

A more accurate reading is that Donny recognizes a shared emotional structure. Martha clings to Donny as a fantasy object. Donny, in turn, clings to Martha’s messages because they give shape to his shame, fear, anger, and need to understand what happened. Both characters use an attachment as a way of escaping or organizing unbearable inner experiences, but their actions, circumstances, and responsibilities are not the same.

Richard Gadd has emphasized that he wanted the story to avoid a simple victim-versus-villain structure and to include Donny’s mistakes and emotional entanglement. He has also described the series as ambiguous, leaving viewers room to decide what the ending means. Those comments support a reading based on psychological parallelism—not a twist in which Donny is revealed to be secretly identical to Martha. Netflix’s ending analysis also frames the finale around that ambiguity.

Why does the final bar scene mirror the opening?

At the beginning of the series, Donny gives Martha a free cup of tea at the pub. It appears to be a small act of kindness, made in response to her visible distress. Martha invests the gesture with much greater meaning than Donny intended.

At the end, the situation is reversed. Donny is sitting at a bar, discovers that he has no wallet, and accepts a drink from the bartender. The structural parallel is clear:

  • At the start, Donny is the person offering a free drink.
  • At the end, Donny is the person who cannot pay and receives one.
  • At the start, Martha attaches extraordinary emotional significance to a seemingly minor kindness.
  • At the end, Donny is placed in a position where he can feel how exposed and dependent a person may be in that moment.

The scene does not say that Donny will now behave exactly as Martha did. Instead, it gives him a brief experience of the vulnerability that surrounded Martha when they first met. It asks whether a small act of kindness can become dangerously important to someone who is isolated, desperate, or psychologically injured.

Donny’s crying suggests recognition. He may be mourning what happened to him, what he did to keep the attachment alive, or the fact that he now sees Martha as a damaged person without being able to deny the damage she caused. The show does not reduce his reaction to one explanation.

What does Darrien have to do with the ending?

The finale cannot be understood only through Martha. It also has to be read alongside Donny’s return to Darrien, the man who sexually assaulted him.

Donny’s continued attraction to Darrien is one of the series’ most difficult ideas. Darrien gives Donny professional attention and encouragement while exploiting him, supplying drugs, and assaulting him. Even after recognizing the abuse, Donny remains emotionally drawn back toward him.

That contradiction is not presented as proof that Donny wanted the assault or that he is responsible for Darrien’s actions. It illustrates how abuse can create a damaging sense of attachment or perceived need for the abuser. Richard Gadd has described Donny’s return to Darrien as one of the story’s most truthful elements. His interview with GQ discusses the complicated attachment at the center of that relationship.

This is why Martha’s arrest does not solve everything. Donny has taken important steps toward freedom: he has told his parents the truth, acknowledged his sexuality, and seen Martha face legal consequences. Yet trauma has not disappeared. He can understand that Martha harmed him while still feeling compassion for her. He can condemn Darrien while still being drawn toward him. The series treats these contradictions as consequences of trauma, not as evidence that Donny secretly wanted to be abused.

Who has Donny become?

By the final frame, Donny is neither a fully healed survivor nor a new Martha. He has become more conscious of his own participation in destructive emotional loops.

That self-knowledge is painful because it removes the comforting idea that he was merely a passive character carried from one catastrophe to the next. Donny did not cause Martha’s stalking, and he did not cause Darrien’s abuse. But he did sometimes encourage Martha’s fantasy, seek validation from harmful people, return to relationships that damaged him, perform versions of himself for attention, and turn traumatic experiences into comedy before he fully understood them.

Those facts should not be confused with responsibility for the crimes committed against him. They do, however, explain why the story refuses to give him a simple moral position from which he can judge everyone else. Donny is both a victim of serious harm and a person capable of making damaging choices.

The final drink represents recognition more than transformation. Donny is briefly placed where Martha once sat, so he can understand how dependency might begin. The episode ends before we learn whether that insight will lead to recovery or repetition.

Is Martha’s story about the stuffed toy completely reliable?

The series presents Martha’s explanation in a voicemail, but it does not independently confirm every detail of her childhood account. Her explanation is emotionally revealing, whether or not every part of it is literally verifiable.

That distinction matters. The voicemail helps the audience understand how Martha sees Donny, but it does not erase the possibility that she is interpreting or reshaping her own history. The show is interested in the emotional truth of the attachment rather than offering a clinical report about Martha’s past.

It is also better to avoid diagnosing either character from the finale. The series shows obsessive behavior, trauma, abuse, shame, dependency, and emotional projection. It does not require the audience to assign a definitive diagnosis in order to understand what happened.

What is confirmed, and what remains interpretation?

Confirmed in the series or creator commentary Interpretive rather than confirmed
Martha calls Donny “baby reindeer” because he resembles a stuffed toy that comforted her as a child. Donny will become a stalker or repeat Martha’s behavior.
Martha is arrested, pleads guilty, receives a nine-month sentence, and is subject to a five-year restraining order. The final drink guarantees that the cycle will repeat.
Donny tells his parents that he was raped and that he is bisexual. Martha’s childhood account is wholly accurate.
The final drink echoes Donny’s free tea for Martha at the beginning. Donny and Martha are morally interchangeable.
Richard Gadd intended the story to include Donny’s mistakes and to leave room for audience interpretation. Donny has already completed a transformation into Martha.

Why the ending feels circular but not hopeless

Baby Reindeer ends in a circle rather than a straight line. The free drink returns, but with the roles reversed. Martha once treated Donny as a comforting object; the finale asks whether Donny can now recognize the danger of turning another person—or a damaging attachment—into an emotional refuge. And Martha’s legal punishment resolves the external threat without resolving Donny’s internal wounds.

Still, the finale is not entirely hopeless. Donny has acquired language for his assault, his sexuality, his shame, and his own harmful choices. He has told his parents the truth instead of allowing Martha to expose it for him. That is a meaningful act of agency, even though it does not produce instant recovery.

The last image leaves his next step unwritten. That uncertainty is the point. Donny has begun to see the pattern, but seeing it is not the same as escaping it. He has not become Martha; he has become someone capable of recognizing how attachment, trauma, shame, and the need for validation can entangle a person. Whether that recognition becomes the beginning of recovery is deliberately left open.

Viewers who want to compare the television adaptation with its theatrical origins can also look for Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer play. The stage text is a related source, not a transcript of every event or episode in the Netflix series, so it is best approached as another form of the story rather than a definitive answer key.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to Martha after the finale?

Martha pleads guilty, receives a nine-month prison sentence, and is subject to a five-year restraining order. This provides legal closure, but the series makes clear that Donny’s emotional recovery is not complete.

What does the final drink mean in Baby Reindeer?

The bartender’s free drink mirrors the free tea Donny gave Martha in the opening episode. The reversal places Donny in a vulnerable position and helps him understand how a small act of kindness might become heavily charged for someone who is isolated or psychologically injured.

The Bottom Line

Donny has not become Martha. He has recognized that he, too, can become compulsively attached to people and stories that organize his pain. The final bar scene is a warning about the possibility of repetition, not proof that repetition will occur.
