A home PC’s cost depends on its measured power use and your household’s marginal electricity rate. Lightsail’s cost depends on the monthly plan plus any excess outbound-transfer charge—and Mumbai-region plans have half the standard transfer allowance. At a continuous 4 Mb/s, an idealized 30-day stream represents about 1,296 decimal GB of outbound video, so the lowest listed Lightsail plan’s base price alone is not a realistic total for that example.
Use the same stream settings and 30-day period for both calculations. The figures below are estimates, not a quote or a tested comparison of encoding performance.

For Lightsail, AWS lists a Linux/Unix public-IPv4 Nano plan at $5/month, with 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD and 1 TB standard transfer. AWS says Mumbai-region plans receive half the standard transfer allowance, so that plan’s listed allowance is effectively 0.5 TB in Mumbai. The published plan price is not the same as a full-month streaming bill when outbound traffic exceeds the allowance.
AWS says both inbound and outbound data count against the allowance, but only excess outbound transfer is billed beyond it. The India excess-transfer rate listed in AWS’s Lightsail FAQ is $0.13 USD/GB. AWS prices and terms can change, so verify the current Lightsail plan and transfer details before committing.

Estimate how much data your stream sends
For a continuous stream, a useful first estimate is:
bitrate in Mb/s × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8,000,000 = decimal GB over 30 days
The 2,592,000 seconds represent 30 days. This arithmetic estimates video payload at a constant bitrate; protocol overhead, other traffic and AWS’s actual byte accounting can change the billable total.

These are examples of the calculation, not recommended settings for every stream. YouTube’s live encoder guidance says settings depend on resolution, frame rate and bitrate, and recommends RTMPS: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Check YouTube Help’s current encoder guidance for the format you intend to send.
Illustrative Lightsail transfer math for Mumbai
Using the Nano plan’s effective 0.5 TB Mumbai allowance as approximately 500 GB for a rough decimal calculation, a 4 Mb/s stream’s estimated 1,296 GB is about 796 GB over that allowance. At the FAQ’s listed $0.13 USD/GB India rate, that would be roughly $103.48 in excess transfer, plus the $5/month plan price: about $108.48 before any other costs. This is an illustrative estimate from the stated assumptions, not an AWS quote; actual transfer accounting may differ.
At 6 Mb/s, the same rough calculation gives about 1,444 GB over the allowance, or about $187.72 in excess transfer at that rate, plus the plan price. The larger point is that a $5 plan does not mean a 24/7 stream will cost $5 total when it sends more data than its included allowance.

Outside Mumbai, do not apply the Mumbai half-allowance adjustment. The standard listed allowance for this plan is 1 TB; a 4 Mb/s estimate of 1,296 GB is still above that figure. These calculations use decimal GB to make the bitrate arithmetic transparent. They should not be treated as exact predictions of AWS billing units or traffic measurement.

Measure the computer’s average power draw at the wall while it is doing the actual streaming workload, then calculate:

720 hours is a 30-day month. For example, a measured average draw of 100 watts uses 72 kWh over that period; multiply 72 by your own marginal billed rate to estimate the PC’s electricity cost. Include capture equipment, storage or networking devices only if they are additional always-on loads and you want their energy included.
A plug-in electricity usage monitor is an optional way to measure the PC’s wall draw. Use the reading from your own workload with your own tariff; no particular meter model or accuracy is established here.
Use your actual tariff, not a national average
India does not have one household electricity price that applies to all readers. The Central Electricity Authority’s tariff publication distinguishes states, utilities and consumer categories. The Ministry of Power explains that state commissions determine retail tariffs and state governments may subsidize some consumer classes. Your bill and the rate that applies to the next unit you consume are more useful inputs than a countrywide assumed ₹/kWh figure.

Compare the two on the same basis
- Choose the stream settings. Fix the resolution, frame rate and bitrate you actually intend to send, using YouTube’s current guidance for that format. The cost estimates are only as good as the bitrate assumption.
- Estimate monthly outbound volume. Multiply constant Mb/s by 2,592,000 and divide by 8,000,000 for an approximate decimal-GB figure over 30 days.
- Estimate the Lightsail bill. Add the relevant plan price to any excess outbound transfer. Use half the listed standard allowance for Mumbai-region plans, and verify current AWS terms and prices.
- Measure the home system. Record average wall watts under the streaming workload. If it varies materially, use a representative average rather than the idle or peak reading.
- Apply the household rate. Convert measured watts to monthly kWh with the formula above and multiply by your marginal billed tariff. Add separately measured always-on equipment if relevant.
- Put excluded costs beside the result. State whether the computer is already owned. Account separately for internet service, hardware purchase or replacement, backup power, repairs and the value of downtime rather than silently treating them as zero.
The home-PC figure is usually an electricity estimate, not the complete cost of keeping a stream available. The Lightsail figure is a cloud-service estimate, not proof that a given instance can encode the stream. No PC, Lightsail instance or stream workload was benchmarked for this comparison.
Operational trade-offs that change the decision
Home PC
- The stream depends on the computer, its internet connection and local power staying available. An outage or restart can interrupt the stream.
- If the PC is already owned and your marginal electricity cost is modest, its direct monthly energy cost may compare favorably with a cloud bill that includes substantial excess transfer.
- For an accurate comparison, include the real streaming workload and any capture equipment in the wall measurement. A monitor or other peripheral only belongs in the calculation if it remains on for the stream.
AWS Lightsail
- The plan bundles compute, storage and transfer allowance, but its published specifications do not establish whether it can encode your selected format at the needed quality.
- Transfer allowance depends on region. The Mumbai adjustment matters especially for a continuous stream that sends terabytes per month.
- Cloud hosting removes dependence on a home PC and home internet for the stream process, but the instance still needs a suitable configuration and its traffic terms still affect cost.
Keep the stream eligible and technically stable
Choose encoding settings from YouTube’s current guidance for your resolution and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that is correct for every stream. Use a stable bitrate assumption for cost planning, while allowing for traffic overhead. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest. Do not treat specialized HDR instructions as ordinary-stream requirements: YouTube’s HDR workflow has separate HLS, HEVC, 10-bit and segment requirements.
A valid stream key and a working ingest setup are only technical prerequisites. They do not grant rights to the video or music being broadcast. Use material you own or have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies before building a 24/7 channel around recordings. A stream that can stay online is not automatically eligible for monetization; repetitive or reused material can raise separate policy questions.
