There is no single flat price for running AWS Elemental MediaPackage continuously. AWS bills live MediaPackage usage for video ingested and video originated and packaged. Your total may also include an encoder or transcoder, CDN delivery, data transfer, and other services. A YouTube-specific estimate needs one important clarification: the AWS sources cited here do not establish a direct MediaPackage-to-YouTube route.
What MediaPackage charges for live video
MediaPackage has two main live usage components: ingest and origination/packaging. Ingest volume depends on the number and bitrate of input streams. Origination and packaging depend on how much video MediaPackage sends toward viewers or a CDN. AWS recommends CDN caching because cached requests can reduce the volume MediaPackage must originate and package. See AWS Elemental MediaPackage pricing for its billing model and additional charge details.
- Ingest: higher-bitrate inputs and more input streams increase ingested data. Redundant input pipelines can also affect the workload.
- Origination and packaging: audience traffic and the share served from CDN cache affect how much video is delivered from MediaPackage.
- Other services: an encoder or transcoder and viewer delivery may be separate billable services. Delivery through a CDN other than CloudFront may also incur internet data-transfer charges.
What AWS’s example costs—and what it does not
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS deployment guide gives an illustrative US East (N. Virginia) scenario: about 1,000 viewers watching for one hour with an SD-540p profile. In that particular example, MediaPackage ingest is estimated at $0.11 per hour and packaging/origination at $0.40 per hour. MediaLive is separately estimated at $1.99 per hour, and CloudFront at $67.24 per hour.
Those numbers are not a current quote for a 24/7 YouTube stream. They are tied to the guide’s region, profile, audience and assumptions: standard pricing, no free-tier usage or discounts, a 99% CDN cache/hit ratio, and viewers consuming the highest bitrate. AWS says actual costs may be lower and prices can change. The figures show why the MediaPackage line items should not be mistaken for the complete workflow bill.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How the guide illustrates ingest
The guide uses $0.03 per GB for standard live ingest in its example calculation, based on the aggregate bitrate of the live input streams. It converts a 4.2 Mbps example to about 1.85 GB per hour before its stated redundancy assumption, or 3.70 GB per hour with redundancy, yielding $0.11 per hour. Treat this as the guide’s example calculation and unit convention—not a universal rate for every region or setup.
Why a 24/7 estimate depends on your actual workload
Do not multiply the one-hour example by 24 and present the result as your channel’s price. First model actual operating hours and the traffic through each billable part of the workflow. The AWS guide’s example is specific to its own conditions; your region, inputs, outputs and cache behavior may differ.

Inputs to gather before estimating
- AWS region and the applicable current rate schedule.
- Each input stream’s bitrate and the number of input streams.
- Whether redundant input pipelines are used.
- Expected output bitrate and audience traffic.
- Expected fraction of requests served from CDN cache rather than MediaPackage.
- Hours of operation, including whether the stream truly runs all day, every day.
- Whether the estimate includes MediaLive or another encoder/transcoder, CloudFront or another CDN, data transfer, storage and other services.
AWS recommends cost estimation and budget monitoring, and directs users to current service pricing because prices change. Use the AWS Live Streaming on AWS guidance alongside current rates when building a workload-specific estimate.
Clarify the YouTube route before pricing the workflow
The AWS setup material describes MediaPackage as receiving encoder input and providing endpoints for players or CDNs. It does not establish that MediaPackage itself sends a stream directly to YouTube. Before treating a MediaPackage estimate as the cost of a YouTube live channel, determine whether you need MediaPackage for a separate audience-facing origin, for contribution into another system, or both—and verify the connection path for your actual architecture. Without that clarification, a complete YouTube-specific bill cannot be established from these figures.
