If an AWS Elemental MediaLive channel will not start a YouTube stream, first verify the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in your YouTube Live Control Room, then compare them with MediaLive’s destination and output settings. AWS lists MediaLive endpoints in Mumbai and Hyderabad, but regional availability alone does not show that your AWS region caused the failure.
Start with the YouTube ingest details
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Open the Stream tab or schedule a stream, then go to Stream settings.
- Reveal and copy the RTMPS URL. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default. Use the lock control to reveal the secure RTMPS URL and copy it from there. Treat the URL and stream key as separate values.
- Copy the current stream key separately. Use the key associated with the stream you intend to start. Do not paste it into screenshots, logs, or support messages; redact it before sharing diagnostic information.
- Check whether YouTube sees an incoming stream. Keep Live Control Room open while starting the MediaLive channel. Whether YouTube reports an incoming stream helps distinguish an ingest connection problem from an issue later in the YouTube broadcast workflow.
YouTube’s Live Control Room is the source of truth for the ingest URL and key for your stream. Follow its streaming setup guidance rather than relying on an old URL copied from another channel or an earlier setup.
Compare MediaLive’s destination with the RTMPS URL
MediaLive represents an RTMP destination as multiple fields rather than necessarily one complete URL. AWS describes destination details including protocol, host or IP address, port, and application name; the stream name is configured separately in the RTMP output settings. A mismatch between those fields and YouTube’s current URL can prevent the connection even when the pieces look familiar.
- Confirm the protocol is
rtmps, notrtmp. - Compare the destination host and port with the URL revealed in Live Control Room.
- Check the application path and stream-name field together. Do not duplicate or omit the application path, and do not place the key in a field that changes how MediaLive constructs the destination.
- Match MediaLive’s certificate or TLS mode to the secure destination requirements.
Use AWS’s MediaLive RTMP destination documentation to identify how the destination fields map to the output. The exact field values should come from YouTube’s currently revealed RTMPS URL and the stream’s key, not from a generic example.

Use protocol, port, and TLS clues to diagnose connection errors
YouTube’s developer guidance describes RTMPS as RTMP secured with TLS on port 443; the connection also needs the host name for SNI authentication. A destination that points at the right-looking server but uses cleartext RTMP, the wrong port, or an incorrect hostname can fail before YouTube recognizes an incoming stream.
- SSL or certificate error: Recheck the complete RTMPS URL and MediaLive certificate mode. If the URL appears correct but the error remains, YouTube says to try port 443.
- Timeout: Recheck host, protocol, port, and application path. A timeout can occur when the URL is wrong or when cleartext RTMP is sent to a server expecting RTMPS; it does not by itself prove an AWS-region problem.
- No incoming stream in YouTube: Focus first on MediaLive’s destination fields, stream-name configuration, and connection state, because the ingest has not yet become visible in Live Control Room.
See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guidance for the protocol and TLS details.

Confirm the output format MediaLive sends
AWS lists H.264 video and AAC audio as supported codecs for RTMP and RTMPS output. If MediaLive establishes a connection but YouTube does not accept or recognize the stream as expected, check that the output uses those codecs. This check is most useful after verifying the destination and seeing evidence that the connection is reaching YouTube.
Consult the AWS RTMP output codec guidance when reviewing the output configuration.

Read the channel and output state before changing retries
Record the channel state, the RTMP output’s connection, retry, or error state, and the exact error text with its timestamp. Also note whether YouTube Live Control Room shows an incoming stream. These observations narrow the failure to channel startup, destination connection, or a later ingest/recognition step.
MediaLive exposes settings such as cache, restart delay, connection retry interval, retry count, and certificate mode. Change them only in response to the observed state or error. More retries may give a recoverable connection another chance, but they cannot correct an incorrect URL, protocol, host, or key.

Does the AWS region explain a YouTube stream failure in India?
AWS lists MediaLive endpoints in Asia Pacific (Mumbai), ap-south-1, and Asia Pacific (Hyderabad), ap-south-2. That confirms service endpoint availability in those locations; it does not establish that either region is available for a particular account or channel, that one should be selected, or that a region choice caused a destination connection failure. The reviewed official guidance does not establish an India-specific YouTube restriction or a current regional outage from this symptom alone.
If you are comparing regions, check actual account and channel availability, the network path and latency from the MediaLive output to YouTube’s ingest endpoint, and your operational requirements. The available documentation does not provide measured India-to-YouTube latency or a basis for recommending Mumbai over Hyderabad, or vice versa. See the AWS MediaLive regional endpoint list for the listed endpoints.

Common failure patterns and next checks
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| SSL or certificate error | Use the RTMPS URL revealed in Live Control Room, verify the hostname and MediaLive certificate mode, and try port 443 if the URL appears correct. |
| Connection timeout | Compare protocol, host, port, and application path against the current YouTube URL. Check whether the configuration is attempting RTMP instead of RTMPS. |
| MediaLive starts, but YouTube shows no incoming stream | Inspect the RTMP output state and error, then verify the separate stream-name setting and destination fields against the current URL and key. |
| YouTube receives a connection but does not accept or recognize the stream | Check that the MediaLive RTMP/RTMPS output uses H.264 video and AAC audio. |
| Retries continue without recovery | Use the reported error to revisit destination, TLS, and output compatibility. Retry count and interval cannot repair incorrect connection details. |
For a useful escalation, collect the AWS region and channel state, exact MediaLive output error and timestamp, destination fields with the key redacted, the source of the current YouTube RTMPS URL, and whether Live Control Room reports an incoming stream. Those details are more diagnostic than the location of the operator alone.
