MediaPackage does not list a maximum 24-hour runtime for a continuous channel. Its “maximum live manifest length” is a rolling-playlist limit—not a timer that stops the stream. The published default is 5 minutes for MediaPackage v1 and 15 minutes for v2. The applicable limits depend on which generation you use, and your AWS account’s actual adjustable quotas may differ from the published defaults.
What are the AWS Elemental MediaPackage limits for a 24/7 YouTube channel?
AWS publishes separate quota tables for MediaPackage v1 and v2. The figures below are from Amazon Web Services documentation accessed in 2026; AWS’s online quota pages do not state a publication year. Adjustable values are published defaults, not a guarantee that every account or Region has those exact quotas. Check the actual values for the AWS Region where your channel runs.
MediaPackage v1 live quotas
| Limit | Published value | Quota type and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Channels | 30 | Adjustable default per Region/account |
| Endpoints | 10 per channel | Adjustable; the limit is per channel |
| Maximum live manifest length | 5 minutes | Adjustable |
| Concurrent harvest jobs | 10 | Adjustable |
| Ingest streams | 20 per channel | Hard limit |
| Tracks | 10 per ingest stream | Hard limit |
| Maximum content age for time-shifted viewing | 336 hours (14 days) | Hard limit |
| Maximum time-shifted manifest length | 24 hours | Hard limit |
| Maximum live-to-VOD manifest length | 24 hours | Hard limit |
| Input requests | 50 per second per channel | Hard limit |
| Media-segment output requests | 300 per second per endpoint | Hard limit; AWS describes this as indicative under typical CDN use and notes that abnormal request patterns can reduce it |
| Manifest output requests | 5,000 per second per endpoint | Hard limit; AWS describes this as indicative under typical CDN use and notes that abnormal request patterns can reduce it |
| REST API requests | 5 per second steady state; 50 per second burst | Hard limit |
MediaPackage v2 live quotas
| Limit | Published value | Quota type and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Channel groups | 3 per account | Adjustable default |
| Channels | 10 per channel group | Adjustable default |
| Channels | 20 per channel group | Hard limit listed in the v2 quota table; do not confuse it with the 10-channel adjustable default |
| Endpoints | 10 per channel | Adjustable default |
| Maximum live manifest length | 15 minutes | Adjustable default |
| Manifests | 25 per origin endpoint | Adjustable default |
| Active harvest jobs | 10 per channel group | Adjustable default |
| Tracks | 10 per ingest stream | Hard limit |
| Maximum content age for time-shifted viewing | 336 hours (14 days) | Hard limit |
| Maximum time-shifted manifest length | 24 hours | Hard limit |
| Input requests | 200 per second per channel | Hard limit |
| Media-segment output requests | 500 per second per endpoint | Hard limit; AWS says the figure is indicative under typical CDN use and can be lower with abnormal request patterns |
| Manifest output requests | 10,000 per second per endpoint | Hard limit; AWS says the figure is indicative under typical CDN use and can be lower with abnormal request patterns |
| REST API requests | 5 per second steady state; 50 per second burst | Hard limit |
Can MediaPackage run continuously for 24 hours a day?
The live quota tables do not give a maximum runtime for a continuously operating channel. The 24-hour limits refer to time-shifted or live-to-VOD manifest length, not a requirement to stop a live channel after a day. Likewise, the 336-hour (14-day) value is the maximum age of content available for time-shifted viewing; it is not the channel’s operating duration.
For a continuous service, design for the limits that affect the actual workload: the number of ingest streams and tracks, input request rate, endpoint output request rates, and the live manifest setting for your MediaPackage generation. A quota ceiling does not establish that a particular architecture will meet a target audience size or remain uninterrupted.

What is the difference between MediaPackage v1 and v2 quotas?
The generations use different resource structures and have different published live-manifest and request-rate values. V1 lists channels per Region/account; v2 organizes channels into channel groups. Do not apply one generation’s limit to the other.
| Comparison | MediaPackage v1 | MediaPackage v2 |
|---|---|---|
| Channel structure | 30 channels per Region/account, adjustable default | 3 channel groups per account and 10 channels per group, adjustable defaults; the quota table also lists a hard limit of 20 channels per group |
| Maximum live manifest length | 5 minutes, adjustable | 15 minutes, adjustable default |
| Input requests | 50 per second per channel, hard limit | 200 per second per channel, hard limit |
| Endpoint media-segment output requests | 300 per second, hard limit | 500 per second, hard limit |
| Endpoint manifest output requests | 5,000 per second, hard limit | 10,000 per second, hard limit |
| Time-shift content age | 336 hours (14 days), hard limit | 336 hours (14 days), hard limit |
The endpoint request-rate values are not viewer-count guarantees. AWS describes them as indicative under typical CDN use; unusual request patterns, including abnormal unique headers or query strings, can reduce the rates. Model origin traffic and CDN behavior rather than translating a requests-per-second quota directly into a promised audience size.

How do the quotas fit into a YouTube live workflow?
MediaPackage is a live packaging and origin service, not by itself a complete YouTube encoder workflow. AWS describes a MediaPackage channel as an entry point for streams from upstream encoders. MediaPackage packages incoming content and makes it available through origin endpoints for players or downstream CDNs. AWS gives MediaLive as an example upstream encoder and CloudFront as an example downstream CDN.
A YouTube design therefore needs a compatible path from source to processing or packaging to YouTube ingest. A MediaPackage playback endpoint should not be assumed to function as a YouTube ingest destination simply because it serves HLS. AWS says an HLS endpoint can deliver content when requests are sent to its URL; that describes delivery from the endpoint, not YouTube ingest compatibility.

RTMP or RTMPS ingest
YouTube recommends RTMPS for its common encoder-ingest workflow. The encoder or bridge in your architecture must be able to send a supported live feed to YouTube; MediaPackage quotas alone do not prove that connection is configured correctly.
HLS ingest
YouTube also documents HLS ingest, with specific requirements: MPEG-TS segments, segment durations between 1 and 4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and a rolling playlist containing no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video segments. Confirm that the encoder or bridge can meet these requirements before treating an HLS workflow as compatible.

How should you verify or change your AWS quotas?
- Identify whether the channel uses MediaPackage v1 or v2, then use that generation’s quota table.
- In AWS Service Quotas, check the values for the account and Region where the channel runs. Published adjustable defaults may not match the values available to your account.
- Request an increase for an adjustable quota through Service Quotas where the quota is available for increase. Approval and the resulting account value are not guaranteed by the published default.
- Treat hard limits as design boundaries: quota requests do not raise them. Check especially ingest streams, tracks, time-shift retention, and request-rate limits.
- Estimate endpoint segment and manifest request rates for the expected CDN and client behavior; do not rely on the indicative rates as a guaranteed capacity target.
Cost and operational considerations
These figures describe MediaPackage quotas, not the cost of operating a 24/7 YouTube channel. A complete AWS design may involve upstream encoding, packaging, delivery, and other resources; the quota tables do not provide a total cost estimate. Estimate the full architecture using the services and traffic pattern you actually plan to run, and validate the ingest bridge independently.
