“2000s cartoons” meant more than one kind of childhood TV: preschoolers could follow an interactive learning adventure, while older kids found after-school comedy, fantasy and superhero stories. This nostalgic roundup spans those formats and networks, without pretending there is one definitive list—or that any show belongs to only one generation’s memories.
Preschool shows built around learning and participation
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (Disney Channel, premiered May 5, 2006)
This half-hour computer-animated series invited preschoolers to help Mickey and friends solve problems. D23 describes early math skills and problem-solving as part of its aims, making it a distinctly participatory kind of cartoon rather than simply a comedy to watch passively. D23’s series entry records its format, audience and premiere date.
Dora the Explorer, Blue’s Clues and Little Bill (Nickelodeon)
These preschool titles appeared alongside cartoons for older children on Nickelodeon’s Saturday-morning CBS schedule for 2003–04. Their presence is a reminder that a weekend cartoon lineup could mix learning-oriented preschool programming with more conventional animated comedy and adventure. The July 17, 2003 CBS and Nickelodeon announcement lists all three.
Saturday-morning and after-school cartoons
Hey Arnold! and The Wild Thornberrys (Nickelodeon)
Both were included in the same 2003–04 Nick on CBS Saturday-morning schedule. That broadcast context is part of the nostalgia: viewers could encounter cable-network shows in a scheduled broadcast block, alongside other Nickelodeon programming. The announcement also names ChalkZone, another part of that mix. The schedule documents where these shows appeared, not which was most popular or most remembered.

The Replacements (Disney Channel, premiered September 8, 2006)
Disney’s comedy follows orphaned tween siblings Riley and Todd, who use the fictional Fleemco Company to get replacement parents. Its wish-fulfillment premise and school-age leads set it apart from Disney Channel preschool fare. D23’s entry for the series records its premiere date and central setup.
Action, fantasy and superhero adventures
For many viewers, cartoons from the decade were also a route into bigger-than-life worlds: heroes, strange creatures, imaginative settings and ongoing adventures. The period’s children’s TV was spread across multiple networks and audiences, so there was no single house style. A Saturday-morning schedule such as Nick on CBS’s 2003–04 lineup shows several kinds of programming sharing the same viewing window; the cited schedule itself does not establish a complete catalogue of action or fantasy shows.

Visually distinctive and surreal comedy
Fanboy and Chum Chum (Nickelodeon, announced in 2009)
With its exaggerated CG look and outsized, costumed central duo, Fanboy and Chum Chum leaned into absurd comedy. In Nickelodeon’s October 19, 2009 launch announcement, creator and co-executive producer Eric Robles described the pair as “the strange kids in class who would wear those crazy Halloween costumes and never take them off.” Paramount’s announcement identifies Robles as creator and discusses the show’s launch and CG animation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why 2000s cartoon memories vary
The decade’s cartoons crossed networks, age groups and formats. A preschooler learning alongside an on-screen host had a different viewing experience from a tween following Riley and Todd’s comic family premise, or a viewer tuning into a Saturday-morning broadcast block. Premiere dates and original network labels can make a memory more specific, but they cannot tell us which show a generation remembers most. These are representative examples, not a ranked or exhaustive best-of list; nostalgia is personal, and no evidence here establishes a single “best” cartoon or a particular birth cohort that remembers them.
