The agreement, announced in September 2024, had been expected to close in mid-2025. AT&T said it expected approximately $7.6 billion in cash payments through 2029—not a single payment at closing. The timeline is clear; the available transaction announcements alone do not establish whether the sale was financially “awful.”
What AT&T sold—and why the sale was a final step
AT&T’s sale in 2025 transferred its entire remaining 70% interest in DIRECTV to TPG. It was the final step in a separation that began earlier: in 2021, AT&T and TPG announced a new entity to operate AT&T’s U.S. video unit. The 2025 transaction therefore ended AT&T’s remaining ownership stake rather than launching the relationship between the companies. AT&T’s 2021 announcement provides that historical context; its September 2024 announcement specifies the remaining 70% stake.
When did AT&T sell the rest of DIRECTV?
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2021 | AT&T and TPG announced a new entity to operate AT&T’s U.S. video unit. See AT&T’s announcement. |
| September 30, 2024 | AT&T announced an agreement to sell its remaining 70% interest to TPG and projected a mid-2025 close. AT&T’s release. |
| July 2, 2025 | AT&T announced that the sale of its entire remaining 70% stake had closed. AT&T’s completion announcement. |
The expected mid-2025 closing window and the actual July 2, 2025 completion date are consistent; the closing announcement supplies the definitive date.
Who owns DIRECTV now?
At completion on July 2, 2025, TPG said DIRECTV had become a wholly owned portfolio company of TPG Capital. That is the ownership status stated in TPG’s closing announcement. AT&T’s 2025 annual report also records that it sold its interest to TPG on that date. This answers the ownership question as of the closing; it does not establish whether ownership changed after that date.

Was the approximately $7.6 billion paid all at once?
No such conclusion follows from AT&T’s announcement. On September 30, 2024, the company described approximately $7.6 billion in expected cash payments through 2029. That is a payment horizon extending beyond the anticipated closing, not evidence that the full amount was delivered on July 2, 2025. The announcement does not, by itself, establish how much was received on the closing date or the payment schedule year by year.
Was the transaction “awful”?
“Awful” is a judgment, not a conclusion established by the closing date, ownership transfer, or announced payment figure. Those facts show what AT&T agreed to sell, when it expected the deal to close, when it actually closed, and the announced cash-payment horizon. They do not amount to a full-cycle return calculation.

A defensible financial verdict would require comparable figures for the original acquisition cost, distributions received while AT&T held its interest, payments actually received by date, taxes, liabilities, and accounting treatment. The cited transaction announcements and annual-report statement do not provide that complete reconstruction. Treating the $7.6 billion estimate as the entire sale price received at closing—or comparing it alone with an acquisition figure—would therefore overstate what these sources establish.
