Instead, it leaked online before Marvel’s planned reveal, where low-resolution footage circulated alongside AI-generated fakes. That made the campaign harder to control and the footage harder to verify—but there is no evidence that the leak measurably hurt ticket sales or the film’s prospects.
What happened to the first Avengers: Doomsday teaser?
Marvel planned four teasers for Avengers: Doomsday, with one playing before Avatar: Fire and Ash each successive week, according to Ars Technica’s December 23, 2025 report. The first teaser leaked online a few days before its scheduled debut.

TheWrap reported that Marvel uploaded the official teaser online on December 23, about a week after the leak. Its account describes Steve Rogers arriving at the farmhouse associated with the end of Avengers: Endgame, retrieving his Captain America uniform, and holding a baby. The official upload gave viewers a high-quality version, but it came after the planned surprise had already escaped into online circulation.
What the leak changed about the viewing experience
A cinema-first surprise became an online discovery
The planned sequence tied the reveal to a theatrical event: audiences could encounter the teaser in cinemas, then see further teasers in the weeks that followed. Once the first clip leaked, some viewers encountered the reveal online before that intended moment. The difference is not simply screen size; a controlled premiere can shape when and how audiences see a reveal, while a leak gives the studio less control over its arrival and context.

Authentic footage was harder to separate from fakes
Forbes reported that leaked clips were low resolution and circulated amid AI-generated fakes that could be difficult to distinguish from real footage. That clutter matters for a campaign built around visual surprises: viewers may see a degraded copy, an imitation, or a genuine frame stripped of context before the official version is available. The leak therefore muddied the information environment as well as disrupting the timing.
The reaction was divided, not uniformly negative
Forbes also described split fan responses to Steve Rogers’s return, including criticism from some viewers who saw the choice as nostalgia-led. That is evidence of debate, not a measure of the audience as a whole. No named statistic establishing the leak’s reach, engagement, overall sentiment, or commercial effect is available in the cited reporting.

What the teaser confirms—and what it leaves unanswered
The confirmed reveal is Chris Evans’s return as Steve Rogers. The teaser shows Steve at the farmhouse, his Captain America uniform, and a baby. Those images do not establish the baby’s identity, Steve’s precise role in the wider story, or the plot significance of his return. Treat claims beyond the visible footage and reported details as speculation, not confirmed story information.
How Marvel could have handled the rollout better
The clearest improvement would have been to protect the intended reveal and make authentic footage easy to find as soon as the leak appeared. The first goal is preventative; the second is a practical response once a leak is already circulating.

- Protect the planned first viewing. The theatrical-first approach depended on audiences seeing the teaser at the intended time. Tighter control of preview footage would have better preserved that cinema-first surprise.
- Publish an official version quickly when a leak breaks. A prompt, high-quality upload gives audiences a reliable reference instead of leaving low-resolution reposts and fakes to dominate the conversation. Marvel did eventually publish an official version, but only after the leaked clip had circulated for about a week.
- Keep planned releases legible after disruption. With four teasers intended to roll out week by week, clear official communication could help audiences distinguish the scheduled campaign from unauthorized clips. The leak did not make the remaining rollout impossible, but it changed the context in which it began.
These are judgments about campaign execution, not proof that Marvel’s creative choice was wrong. Nor do they establish that a different response would have produced more interest or ticket sales.
What later official context adds
In a September 29, 2026 article, The Walt Disney Company reported that Avengers: Endgame: Encore included an extended look at Doomsday. Anthony Russo said the filmmakers had originally treated Endgame as an ending, but later felt they needed to continue from where it left Steve and Peggy. Joe Russo described the later footage as showing concurrent incursions and timelines collapsing. That offers context for the filmmakers’ direction; it does not show that the first teaser leak damaged the campaign or prove that the teaser itself was a poor creative choice. Disney’s article also said the full cast had not been announced at that time.
