In the original animated series’ first 20-episode chapter, Aang—the last Airbender and the Avatar—begins a journey through a world divided among four elemental nations, with Katara and Sokka at his side and the Fire Nation’s pursuit close behind.

Avatar: The Last Airbender: Season 1 is the opening chapter of Nickelodeon’s original animated series: a 20-episode season also known as Book 1: Water. It follows Aang, a twelve-year-old boy who is both the last Airbender and the Avatar—the one person able to master all four elements—as he begins a journey to restore balance to a world threatened by the Fire Nation.

This is the original animated series created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, not the 2010 live-action film The Last Airbender and not a later live-action television adaptation.

What “Season 1” means

The series divides its world among four elemental nations: Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. People who can manipulate one of those elements are known as benders. The Avatar is unique in being able to learn all four.

“Book 1: Water” is the franchise label for Season 1, while “Season 1” is the clearest label for a general audience. Both refer to the same animated 20-episode run—not the full 61-episode original series.

A spoiler-light guide to the story

The season begins when Katara and Sokka, siblings from the Southern Water Tribe, discover a boy frozen inside an iceberg. That boy is Aang, and the possibility that he may be the Avatar quickly turns their lives into a much larger journey.

Aang’s position is deliberately difficult: he is a child asked to shoulder a responsibility that reaches across nations and generations. Katara and Sokka give the story its immediate human center, while Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation pursues Aang. The journey is therefore never only about learning what the Avatar can do; it is also about whether friendship, loyalty, and moral courage can endure in a world already damaged by war.

The season’s Water subtitle gives its first chapter a sense of direction without making it feel like a disconnected anthology. From “The Boy in the Iceberg” to “The Siege of the North, Part 2,” it builds one contained origin arc: Aang emerges into a changed world, learns the scale of what is expected of him, and travels with companions who make that burden bearable.

Why the first season works as an origin chapter

Season 1 has a rare clarity of purpose. The central premise is easy to enter—a missing hero returns after a century, at the moment the world needs him most—but it leaves room for a broad, lived-in setting. Each elemental nation carries its own identity, and bending is not merely a fantasy effect; it is inseparable from heritage, training, conflict, and the balance of power.

Its emotional stakes also remain close to the characters. Aang’s world-scale role is balanced by the companionship of Katara and Sokka, and by the persistent pressure represented by Zuko’s pursuit. The result is an adventure that can be enjoyed as an accessible animated fantasy while inviting a more reflective reading of responsibility, friendship, imbalance, and the long consequences of war. Those themes are interpretations of the season’s premise rather than a claim that every episode delivers a single message.

How to identify the correct version

If you are choosing a stream, disc, soundtrack, or search result, look for references to the original animated series and to Book 1: Water. This avoids a common source of confusion around the franchise name.

  • Correct target: the first 20 episodes of the original animated Avatar: The Last Airbender.
  • Not this title: Paramount’s 2010 live-action film The Last Airbender.
  • Also distinct: later live-action television versions of the premise.
  • Not the episode count: 61 is the total for the original animated series across its complete run, not the length of Season 1.

Official service catalogues can differ by country, so a Season 1 guide is a reliable way to confirm the episode set, but it is not a guarantee that the show is currently streamable in every location.

For collectors: the Book 1 soundtrack and discs

For a season-specific physical companion, Jeremy Zuckerman’s Avatar: The Last Airbender – Book 1: Water (Music from the Animated Series) is available as a 2LP release. It expands the animated series’ original music with full-orchestra performances and includes Book 1-connected selections such as “The Boy in the Iceberg,” “The Blue Spirit,” “The Spirit World,” and “Aang Becomes Ocean.” The associated soundtrack release contains 35 tracks and runs 1 hour and 22 minutes.

When searching retailers, use the specific phrase Avatar The Last Airbender Book 1 Water soundtrack vinyl. Check the listing before purchasing: price, stock, pressing details, and shipping availability change.

A Book 1: Water DVD is another option, but editions can vary. At minimum, confirm that the package contains all 20 episodes; for older discs, also verify region compatibility, video format, disc count, and any claimed bonus features. A Region 1/NTSC edition exists, which may not suit every player or territory.

The franchise context

The original animated series remains an active franchise property. Nickelodeon marked its 20th anniversary in 2025 with digital content, experiences, consumer products, and games, alongside the announcement of Avatar: Seven Havens. That newer project reflects the continuing life of the franchise, but it is neither Season 1’s episode story nor a replacement for the original animated Book 1: Water.

For viewers starting at the beginning, Season 1 is the essential entry point: the chapter that establishes Aang, Katara, Sokka, Zuko, the four nations, and the responsibility at the heart of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
