Ava DuVernay’s 14th is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on December 4, 2026, following select U.S. and U.K. theatrical screenings beginning November 27. Netflix describes it as a documentary about the Fourteenth Amendment’s contested history and present-day meaning. Because the film has not yet premiered, its argument and filmmaking cannot responsibly be reviewed as completed work.
What is Ava DuVernay’s 14th about?
Netflix says the documentary traces the long fight over the Fourteenth Amendment, bringing archival material and scholarship into conversation with present-day headlines. Its announced interviewees include historians Eric Foner and David Blight; public figures Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Anna Paulina Luna, Jeff Flake, Alex Padilla and Stacey Abrams; and legal and cultural voices including Sherrilyn Ifill, Robert Chang, Donald T. Critchlow and Hasan Piker. Netflix reports that DuVernay conducted more than 50 expert interviews. These are details of the announced production, not evidence of its quality or balance.
The question Netflix uses to frame the film is “Who gets to belong?” DuVernay described its relationship to her 2016 documentary 13th this way: “If 13th asked who gets caged, then 14th asks who gets counted.” That is the director’s framing; it does not establish that the two films have the same subject, method or effectiveness.
DuVernay also said the film is not about “the past tense of freedom,” but asks “what kind of country is being written beneath our feet now.” The quotation signals the documentary’s stated ambition to connect constitutional history with current debate. Whether the finished film makes that connection persuasively can only be assessed after viewing it.

Why the Fourteenth Amendment matters
Ratified after the Civil War, the Fourteenth Amendment placed a promise of freedom and equality in the Constitution. Its major themes include citizenship, due process and equal protection, and its provisions have become central to continuing constitutional debates and Supreme Court cases. The National Constitution Center offers an educational module on the amendment covering its text, history, clauses and cases.
Those themes are related but not interchangeable. The amendment’s text, the historical circumstances surrounding its ratification, later judicial interpretations and present political arguments are distinct parts of its story. A documentary can make a case about how they connect; viewers should distinguish that interpretation from the constitutional text itself.
When and where can you watch 14th?
Netflix announced a world premiere at the New York Film Festival for October 9, 2026, and select U.S. and U.K. theatrical screenings beginning November 27. The announced global Netflix streaming premiere is December 4, 2026. Festival, theatrical and streaming dates describe different screenings, so the Netflix date should not be mistaken for the start of every public screening. Dates and availability may change; consult Netflix’s title page for current listing information.
Is 14th an essential or compelling documentary?
That judgment is premature. The film is forthcoming, and the Rotten Tomatoes listing checked for this article showed no critic reviews and no verified audience ratings. Without seeing the finished documentary, there is no sound basis for claims about its pacing, editing, argument, balance or emotional impact.

Netflix executive Adam Del Deo called it “another ambitious and thought-provoking documentary” with “depth, artistry, and humanity.” That is a distributor representative’s promotional assessment, not independent criticism. A fair review should assess the completed film on its own terms, using specific examples from what appears on screen.
