Ava DuVernay describes her documentary 14th as an examination of the Fourteenth Amendment’s history and its continuing significance. In an interview reproduced by Headtopics and attributed there to Variety, she called the moment “very sinister” and “very dangerous”—her characterization of the political stakes, not a neutral finding. Netflix has announced select U.S. and U.K. theatrical releases beginning November 27, 2026, followed by a global Netflix premiere on December 4, 2026; those are announced dates and could change.
What Ava DuVernay says 14th is about
DuVernay and editor-producer Spencer Averick describe the film as growing from their interest in the Fourteenth Amendment and contemporary disputes over citizenship and democratic principles. DuVernay says it traces the amendment’s history, including Reconstruction and the Lost Cause, while connecting that past to present-day debates. Netflix similarly presents the documentary as a historical and contemporary inquiry into the amendment and the question of who belongs.
In the interview text reproduced by Headtopics and identified as originating with Variety, DuVernay said: “At its core, this documentary is about the fact that we’re in the midst of something very sinister — something very dangerous — and we all need to be aware of it.” The wording in the title is hers, and reflects her view of the moment the film addresses.
Why the Fourteenth Amendment is central
Ratified in 1868, the Fourteenth Amendment includes a citizenship clause that says people born or naturalized in the United States and subject to its jurisdiction are citizens of the United States and of the state where they reside. The amendment’s history and the meaning of that language remain part of public debate, including contemporary disputes over birthright citizenship. The Associated Press summarizes that context; the amendment’s text is the primary source for its wording.

Netflix’s announcement quotes DuVernay describing the film’s relationship to her earlier documentary 13th: “If 13th asked who gets caged, then 14th asks who gets counted.” The line captures the new film’s stated focus on citizenship and belonging; it is not a legal conclusion about how the amendment applies in any particular case.
How the filmmakers approached the subject
DuVernay and Averick discuss the challenge of making constitutional material accessible and selecting contributors with distinct areas of expertise. The interview reproduction also says they sought views beyond people already aligned with the filmmakers. According to DuVernay’s account in that interview, the team made more than 300 requests to Republican officeholders and only a small number accepted. That figure is an interviewee’s account as reproduced by Headtopics, not an independently verified count.
The original Variety page was not available in the material reviewed for this article; the interview text is available through Headtopics, which attributes it to Variety. The film’s identity, premise, platform, and release schedule are also described by Netflix.
