Autoplay Not Working on YouTube Playlists? Find the Cause and Fix It

If YouTube stops after one playlist video, skips to recommendations, or refuses to advance, first check Autoplay on the device currently playing the video. YouTube’s Autoplay setting is device-specific, so enabling it in the mobile app does not necessarily enable it on the YouTube website, a television app, or an active cast queue.

The next useful test is to open a known-working public playlist, start a video from inside that playlist, keep the player visible, and avoid scrolling, commenting, or searching until the video ends. This separates an Autoplay setting problem from a blocked, unavailable, or failed next video.

Quick fix: troubleshoot YouTube playlist Autoplay in this order

  1. Confirm that Autoplay is enabled on the device you are using.
  2. Start the video from the playlist itself, not just from a search result.
  3. Keep the player in view and do not scroll, open comments, search, or start another video.
  4. Try a different short, public playlist.
  5. Check the affected playlist for unavailable, private, deleted, age-restricted, or region-restricted videos.
  6. Refresh YouTube, then restart the app or browser and your device.
  7. Test the playlist in an Incognito or Private window.
  8. Temporarily disable extensions, especially ad blockers, script blockers, privacy tools, and video downloaders.
  9. Update the YouTube app or browser.
  10. Clear browser site data or the YouTube app cache where supported.
  11. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or try another network.
  12. Test another device.
  13. Check whether a supervised account or age setting limits Autoplay.
  14. If the failure affects multiple devices and playlists, check for a YouTube service issue and send feedback.

This order begins with reversible tests and becomes progressively more disruptive. You should not clear all browser data or reinstall the app before checking whether Incognito mode identifies the cause.

What does “Autoplay not working” actually mean?

Different symptoms point to different problems:

  • The next video is not selected: Autoplay may be off, the queue may have been replaced, the page may have lost the active player, or a usage prompt may be waiting for confirmation.
  • The next video is selected but does not play: The video may be unavailable, or playback may be failing because of the network, browser, app, or device.
  • YouTube plays a recommendation instead: The playlist queue may not be active, or playback may have started outside the playlist.
  • Only some entries are skipped: Those items may be deleted, private, restricted, unavailable in your country, or inaccessible to your account.
  • The Autoplay switch is missing or keeps turning off: You may be using a different device or Google account, a supervised account may control the setting, cookies may be blocked, or an extension may be changing YouTube’s behavior.
  • A “Continue watching?” prompt appears: This is a viewing safeguard, not necessarily a broken playlist.
  • The playlist will not load or show all entries: The issue may concern the playlist page, app state, network, or YouTube’s service rather than Autoplay itself.

Watch for whether YouTube displays a preview or selection for the next video. That single detail tells you whether YouTube has selected the next playlist item but cannot play it, or whether the queue never advanced.

Confirm Autoplay on the device you are using

Desktop browser

  1. Open a video that belongs to the playlist.
  2. Look at the bottom of the video player.
  3. Turn on the Autoplay switch.
  4. Check that a next-video preview appears.

YouTube documents the control on the watch page, so do not rely only on controls visible on the playlist page. See YouTube’s Autoplay instructions.

Android, iPhone, and iPad

  1. Open the YouTube app.
  2. Tap your profile picture.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Autoplay.
  5. Turn Autoplay on.

You can also change the setting from the video player while watching. The setting may not carry over to a browser, TV app, or another device.

Smart TV and game console

  1. Open YouTube.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Autoplay.
  4. Turn it on.

Menu names and remote-control steps vary by television, console, and streaming device. Look for the Autoplay setting in the YouTube app itself rather than assuming the phone’s setting controls the TV.

Casting from a phone or tablet

Expand the control bar at the bottom of the casting screen and inspect the active queue and its Autoplay control. A phone’s ordinary YouTube setting and the queue currently being cast should be checked separately.

Keep YouTube allowed to advance

YouTube says the next video may not start if you scroll past the player or type a comment or search. For a clean test:

  1. Start a video from the playlist.
  2. Leave the player visible.
  3. Do not open comments, search, another video, or a new queue.
  4. Wait for the video to finish.

If the next video starts under those conditions, Autoplay is probably working. The interruption came from page interaction or a changed queue, not from the playlist’s basic sequence.

Check whether the playlist contains a problem video

Test three things:

  • A short, public playlist containing recent videos.
  • The playlist that fails.
  • A single ordinary video outside any playlist.
Result Likely explanation
No video autoplays anywhere Device setting, browser or app state, account restriction, network problem, or YouTube-side issue.
Ordinary videos autoplay but the playlist does not Playlist contents, queue state, playlist loading, or a playlist-specific problem.
Only one playlist fails One or more inaccessible or unavailable entries, or a problem specific to that playlist.
The same playlist fails on every device Playlist access or contents, or a broader YouTube-side issue.
The playlist works in Incognito An extension, cookie, cache, or browser configuration problem.
Manual playback works but automatic playback fails Autoplay state, user interaction, queue interruption, or a playback transition error.

Look for Video unavailable placeholders and entries that are private, deleted, age-restricted, or unavailable in your country. If a video is private, you cannot repair its access unless the owner grants it or you remove or replace the item.

For a playlist embedded on another website, YouTube specifically documents restrictions involving private, age-restricted, and embedding-disabled videos. Those rules should not automatically be applied to every playlist watched normally at youtube.com. The embedded-playlist guidance explains the distinction.

Fix Autoplay in a desktop browser

1. Test Incognito or Private mode

  1. Open an Incognito or Private window.
  2. Visit YouTube.
  3. Open the same playlist.
  4. Start a video and test Autoplay.

If the playlist works there, the normal browser profile is the likely source. Incognito is a diagnostic test, not a permanent fix; it may also change sign-in and cookie behavior.

2. Disable extensions systematically

  1. Turn off all browser extensions.
  2. Reload YouTube.
  3. Test the playlist.
  4. Re-enable extensions one at a time.
  5. Remove or reconfigure the extension that brings the problem back.

Ad blockers can interfere with playback, but they are not the only possibility. Privacy tools, script blockers, downloaders, interface customizers, and extensions that modify cookies or page layout can also affect the player.

4. Check JavaScript

YouTube depends on JavaScript. In Chrome, open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → JavaScript and ensure sites are allowed to use JavaScript. Reload YouTube afterward. Chrome’s current guidance is available at Chrome Help.

5. Clear YouTube site data

In Chrome, open More → Delete browsing data, select an appropriate time range, choose cached images/files and cookies or site data, and select Delete data. Then sign in again if necessary and retest.

Cookies can store sign-in state and site preferences, so clearing them may sign you out or reset settings. YouTube explains the cache-and-cookie process at YouTube Help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix the YouTube app

Android

  1. Update YouTube from Google Play.
  2. Force-close and reopen the app.
  3. Restart the device.
  4. Try Wi-Fi and mobile data separately.
  5. Open Settings → Apps → YouTube → Storage and cache → Clear cache.
  6. Retest the playlist.

Android menu names differ by version and manufacturer. Clearing the cache is different from clearing app storage or data, which can reset more information. YouTube’s Android troubleshooting steps are described at YouTube Help.

iPhone or iPad

  1. Update YouTube in the App Store.
  2. Force-close and reopen the app.
  3. Restart the device.
  4. Test Wi-Fi and cellular data separately.
  5. If the problem continues, delete and reinstall YouTube.
  6. Sign in again and retest.

iOS generally does not provide the same universal clear-cache control found on Android, so reinstalling is the practical app reset after updating and restarting.

Check the network and the next video’s playback

Autoplay cannot continue if the next video cannot load. Restart the internet connection, try another network, close and reopen YouTube, and reduce video quality if the connection is struggling. Do not treat one universal speed number as an Autoplay requirement: buffering depends on resolution, congestion, device performance, and other users sharing the connection.

TV, console, and casting fixes

A playlist working on a phone but stopping on a TV points first to the TV app, console, or cast session—not necessarily to a damaged playlist.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a TV or console

  1. Check Autoplay in the YouTube app’s own settings.
  2. Update the YouTube app and the device software if updates are available.
  3. Restart the app.
  4. Power-cycle the device: unplug it, wait at least 30 seconds, reconnect it, and test again.

YouTube includes this power-cycle procedure in its television playback guidance.

For casting

  1. Check the queue shown in the cast controls.
  2. Confirm Autoplay in that active queue.
  3. Test the same playlist directly in the TV app.
  4. Test casting a different public playlist.

Direct TV playback and casting are separate tests. If direct playback works but casting fails, focus on the cast queue, phone app, receiver, or local network.

Check account restrictions and viewing safeguards

YouTube says users aged 13–17 have Autoplay turned off by default but may turn it on. A supervised account may not be allowed to change Autoplay if a parent or guardian has disabled it. If the switch is unavailable or persistently resets, check whether you are signed into the expected Google account and whether the account is supervised.

YouTube also uses inactivity safeguards. On a mobile network, Autoplay may stop after 30 minutes of inactivity; on Wi-Fi, it may stop after four hours. Separately, YouTube may show “Video paused. Continue watching?” after uninterrupted viewing—before 30 minutes on mobile, 60 minutes on the web, or 180 minutes on TV. Selecting Yes continues the session. These limits are not evidence that the playlist itself is broken. See YouTube’s “Continue watching?” information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the playlist is embedded on another website

Use Watch on YouTube to test the underlying playlist outside the embedded player. An embed can be affected by whether the uploader allows embedding, whether videos are private or age-restricted, whether the site supplies a valid HTTP Referer, and whether the site is child-directed. YouTube documents embedded-player requirements at YouTube Embedded Players and Player Parameters.

If the playlist works on YouTube but not in the embed, the site’s player configuration or the embedded video’s permissions are more likely than your Autoplay setting.

When YouTube itself may be having a problem

Suspect a service-side issue when the same failure affects multiple playlists, devices, networks, or accounts. First refresh and repeat the comparison with a known-working public playlist. Avoid assuming that every failure is an outage.

YouTube documented a playlist-loading incident on June 9, 2026, in which the app could show “Error loading—Tap to retry” or server error 429; the incident was later marked fixed. That historical notice supports checking official YouTube announcements when playlist loading fails broadly, but it does not establish that a current outage is happening.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If nothing works, report the problem with useful evidence

In the YouTube app, use Profile icon → Help and feedback → Send feedback. Include:

  • Device model and operating system.
  • YouTube app or browser version.
  • Whether all playlists fail or only one.
  • The exact error message.
  • Whether Incognito or Private mode works.
  • Whether another network works.
  • Whether the problem occurs while signed out.
  • The playlist URL, if support requests it.

That information helps distinguish a queue-selection failure from a playback failure and prevents support from treating a playlist-specific issue as a general Autoplay setting problem.
