If dialogue is out of sync on a Roku TV, first work out whether it happens on one title, one app or input, only through external speakers, or everywhere. That quick check points to the likely cause—and helps you avoid resetting the TV or replacing equipment unnecessarily. Try the TV’s built-in speakers, another title and another source before changing audio settings.
First, identify where the delay is coming from
Lip sync is the timing between a speaker’s mouth movements and the sound. With audio ahead of video, you hear the words before the lips move. With audio behind video, the picture moves first and speech follows. A brief pause before sound starts when you turn on an ARC-connected system is different from dialogue remaining out of sync during playback; Roku notes that an ARC-connected Streambar setup may take a moment to begin producing sound (Roku Streambar setup guidance).
- Play a familiar scene with clear dialogue and note whether sound is early or late, constant or intermittent, and whether the problem starts after pausing.
- Test the same scene through the TV’s built-in speakers, if possible.
- Try another title in the same app, then a different app.
- Try another source, such as antenna/live TV or an HDMI-connected device.
- If practical, test the soundbar or receiver with another source, or compare with headphones.
| What you observe | Likely area to investigate |
|---|---|
| One movie or episode only | The title’s audio/video timing, the stream, or an isolated playback error. |
| Every title in one app, but other apps are fine | The app or streaming service. |
| One HDMI input only | The connected console, cable box, player, its settings, or that HDMI connection. |
| TV speakers are in sync; soundbar or receiver is not | ARC/eARC communication, audio-format handling, or processing in the external device. |
| All sources are out of sync through TV speakers | TV picture processing, software, or potentially the TV itself. |
| Only Bluetooth headphones or mobile Headphone Mode are affected | Wireless latency or headphone synchronization settings. |
| Timing changes as playback continues | Buffering, wireless interference, device processing, or software instability. |
Roku likewise recommends comparing titles and sources to distinguish a content problem from a system problem (Roku’s audio/video sync troubleshooting). A fault limited to one film is not a good reason to factory-reset a TV.
Try the least disruptive fixes first
- Restart the TV and audio device. Look under Settings > System for Power or System restart, if your model offers it. You can also turn off and unplug the TV and soundbar or receiver briefly, then reconnect and test again. Menu placement varies by TV brand and Roku OS version.
- Check the connection. For an HDMI soundbar or receiver, use the TV’s port labeled ARC or eARC and select the matching input on the audio device. Reseat the cable at both ends. If you have another suitable cable, testing it can help rule out a connection fault; changing cables is not a universal cure for processing delay.
- Change one setting at a time. Write down the original audio-output setting before testing other formats. Retest the same scene after each change so you know which setting helped.
- If sound comes before the picture, reduce video processing. Temporarily turn off motion smoothing or interpolation, noise reduction, MPEG noise reduction, dynamic contrast, and similar picture enhancements. These can add picture-processing time. Restore features that do not affect synchronization.
- Update relevant software. Check for updates on the Roku TV or separate Roku player, the soundbar or receiver, and the Roku mobile app if you use Headphone Mode. Use the TV maker’s instructions for any separately provided TV firmware. An update is sensible maintenance, but it does not establish that a particular release fixes every lip-sync problem.
Roku’s troubleshooting guidance identifies content timing, transmission errors, demanding formats such as 4K/HDR, picture processing and audio transcoding among possible contributors (Roku support). Which one matters depends on where the fault appears.

Choose an audio format that matches your equipment
Roku TV settings commonly appear under Home > Settings > Audio, but the exact labels vary by manufacturer, model and software. Look for Digital output format, S/PDIF and ARC, S/PDIF and ARC/eARC, or a similar audio-output menu. Your TV may offer Auto, Passthrough, Auto Passthrough, Stereo or Custom. Roku’s guide describes Auto as detecting and converting audio to a compatible format, Passthrough as sending audio to the receiver without TV transcoding, and Stereo as two-channel output (Roku TV User Guide).
| Setting to test | What it does and when to try it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Auto or Auto Detect | A reasonable starting point: the TV selects or converts to a format it believes the connected equipment supports. | Format negotiation or conversion may not work well with every device combination. |
| Passthrough or Auto Passthrough | Worth testing with a compatible soundbar or receiver connected by ARC/eARC, particularly if TV format conversion seems to add delay. TCL also recommends testing Auto Passthrough in some Roku TV HDMI-speaker delay cases (TCL guidance). | If the external device cannot handle the incoming format, you may get silence or other compatibility trouble. Passthrough is not automatically better. |
| PCM or Stereo | A useful diagnostic fallback when you suspect format compatibility or transcoding. Roku recommends PCM-Stereo as a basic mode when a soundbar’s capabilities are unknown (Roku soundbar troubleshooting). | It can force two-channel output and lose Dolby, DTS, Atmos or other multichannel playback, depending on the system. |
Test each option separately and restore the original setting if it does not help. If surround sound matters, do not leave Stereo selected just because it makes a brief diagnostic test easier. Roku also advises turning volume modes off when a Roku device is connected to an AVR or soundbar and surround sound is required (Roku volume-mode guidance).
Check HDMI ARC/eARC and the soundbar or receiver
The usual HDMI audio path is source or Roku playback > TV > TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port > soundbar or receiver. ARC sends TV audio to the external device over HDMI. CEC supports control functions such as power and volume; it is not itself an audio-delay correction. Roku’s setup guidance covers HDMI, CEC, ARC and eARC requirements (Roku HDMI settings).

- Confirm the cable is in the TV port specifically marked ARC or eARC, not an ordinary HDMI input. Confirm the soundbar is set to its HDMI ARC/eARC input.
- Check the TV and audio device menus for HDMI-CEC and ARC/eARC controls; enable the features required by your equipment.
- Disconnect the HDMI cable at both ends. Turn off and unplug the TV and audio device, reconnect the cable, then power the devices back on.
- Test Auto, Auto Passthrough or Passthrough, and PCM/Stereo one at a time. Make sure the receiver supports the format being sent.
- If your soundbar or receiver has an A/V Sync, Lip Sync or Audio Delay control, use that if the TV speakers are in sync but external audio is not.
ARC is widely supported but has less bandwidth and fewer advanced-format capabilities than eARC. eARC supports higher-bandwidth formats and includes lip-sync functionality in its specification, but both ends of the chain must support the relevant features. That does not guarantee perfect synchronization: device processing, firmware and settings can still contribute. Some products do not support eARC, and compatibility can vary (Roku surround-sound connection guidance).
Optical audio can be a useful fallback for testing when ARC/CEC communication is unstable, if both TV and audio device have the required ports. It may offer fewer control features and format options than HDMI eARC. Treat it as an alternative to diagnose the connection, not an automatic upgrade.
Use an audio-delay control carefully
Look on the TV, soundbar or receiver for A/V Sync, Audio Delay, Lip Sync, Digital Audio Delay or Dialogue Sync. The correct adjustment depends on the symptom: if audio arrives after the picture, reducing an audio delay may help; if it arrives before the picture, adding delay may be needed. Controls differ between manufacturers, so make small changes and replay the same scene after each one rather than assuming a universal direction or number.

Do not adjust delay controls on both the TV and soundbar at once. They can stack and make synchronization worse. Return one control to zero or Auto while testing the other. Some devices buffer audio independently, so a TV-side setting may not correct every soundbar or AVR problem.

If synchronization is wrong only with headphones connected through Roku mobile-app Headphone Mode, use Roku’s dedicated adjustment rather than changing the TV’s general output settings:
- Update the Roku mobile app.
- Open the app and tap Remote, then the Headphone icon.
- Tap the Gear icon and choose Adjust audio delay.
- Choose Get started and follow the on-screen instructions.
- If needed, choose Advanced adjustment and fine-tune with the slider.
Roku provides this adjustment specifically for Headphone Mode (Roku Headphone Mode support). It will not fix independent soundbar processing or a TV-wide sync problem. Roku wireless speakers are also not general-purpose Bluetooth speakers: they work with supported Roku TV systems and certain Roku audio products, not arbitrary televisions or Roku streaming players (Roku wireless-speaker compatibility).

Separate game lag from dialogue sync
A game that feels slow to respond may have input lag rather than a lip-sync fault. For a console connected by HDMI, enable Game Mode for that input to reduce picture-processing latency. It is intended for interactive external sources, not as a general streaming fix; Roku says Game Mode is unavailable for streaming services and antenna input (Roku Game Mode guidance). Also check the console’s audio output and surround settings. For cable boxes, disc players and other sources, test their audio output—PCM may be more compatible than a surround format the audio chain cannot handle.
When only one app, channel or title is affected
If the TV speakers and other apps or sources are synchronized, keep the troubleshooting focused. Try another title in the same service, restart the app or playback, and check whether the same title has the problem on another device if one is available. If multiple titles are out of sync only on one streaming channel, Roku recommends contacting that service provider (Roku audio/video sync guidance). Incorrectly authored timing or a transmission issue can affect a specific title; it does not prove that the TV or HDMI cable is defective.
For live TV or an antenna channel, compare another channel and, if possible, another source. For a cable or satellite box, test its settings and connection. A fault restricted to one HDMI input points first to the connected device or that path, not every Roku TV setting.

When to reset or contact support
Before escalating, note which sources are affected, whether sound is early or late, and which output formats and connection tests changed the result. Contact the streaming service for an app-only problem; the console, cable-box or player maker for a source-only problem; the soundbar/receiver maker when TV speakers are synchronized but external audio is not; and the TV maker or Roku support when all sources—including built-in speakers—remain out of sync after basic tests and updates.
A factory reset is a last resort, not a first fix for lip sync. It erases configuration and account-related setup, so you may need to sign in again and restore apps and preferences. Consider it only after the tests isolate a persistent TV-wide issue and you have recorded the settings you will need to restore. Do not assume an update or a reset will cure a defect that appears in only one title or service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an HDMI cable cause lip-sync problems?
A damaged, unreliable or poorly seated cable can disrupt an HDMI connection or format negotiation, so reseating it or testing a known-good cable is reasonable. But replacing a cable is not a proven universal fix when the connection is stable and the cause is picture or audio processing.
Does eARC eliminate audio delay?
No. eARC includes lip-sync functionality and supports higher-bandwidth audio formats, but both the TV and audio device must support the needed features. Processing, settings, firmware or the source can still cause a mismatch.
Why is only live TV out of sync?
If apps and other inputs are synchronized, investigate the affected channel, antenna reception or cable/satellite box rather than resetting the whole TV. Compare another channel and, for a box, check its audio-output settings.
Why does restarting temporarily fix the problem?
A restart can clear a temporary playback, buffering or device-communication state. If the delay returns, use the built-in-speaker and source tests to find which part of the chain consistently triggers it.
