Yes—eligible Kindle eBooks and matching Audible audiobooks can share your last reading or listening position. Audible currently calls this Read & Listen, formerly Whispersync for Voice. You can read at night, listen during a commute, and return to the other format without manually hunting for your place. On supported devices, Immersion Reading goes further by displaying the Kindle text and highlighting words as the professional narration plays.
The feature reduces the friction of changing formats; it does not measure concentration or guarantee better comprehension. Compatibility is title-, account-, app- and device-specific, so check before buying.
What Read & Listen actually does
Read & Listen synchronizes an eligible digital reading position between a matching Kindle eBook and Audible audiobook. For example, read several chapters on a Kindle, listen in the Audible app while walking, then open the Kindle book later and continue near the audiobook’s last position. It synchronizes digital editions—not arbitrary printed-book pages, unrelated audiobook recordings, or every Kindle/Audible combination.

Audible’s newer U.S. support documentation uses Read & Listen; older help pages, product copy and user discussions may still say Whispersync for Voice. Use both terms when searching for support.

Switching versus reading along
- Format switching: Read in Kindle, then listen in Audible, with the eligible position carried between apps or devices.
- Immersion Reading: Listen to the professional audiobook narration while the Kindle text appears on screen and highlights in sync. This is not ordinary Kindle text-to-speech and does not make an arbitrary Kindle file compatible.
Audible also syncs listening position between its own apps. That separate Audible feature does not by itself provide a Kindle text edition.
What you need
- A compatible Kindle eBook and the matching Audible audiobook.
- Both editions associated with the same Amazon account and visible in the relevant libraries.
- A supported Kindle, Kindle app, Fire tablet or Audible app.
- An internet connection when the Audible app streams the eBook text. Audible says some pages may be cached, so do not assume full offline Immersion Reading.
- Position synchronization enabled in the Audible player settings.
Borrowed, shared, returned or differently edited editions may not behave like permanently purchased, matching editions. Narration can also be abridged, dramatized or otherwise different from the text edition, so inspect the product details.
How to check a title before buying
On the Amazon Kindle product page, look for Add Audible narration. The product details may also show a Read & Listen or former Whispersync label. In Audible, look for a Read & Listen badge or the related library filter. An Audible audiobook existing for a book does not prove that a synchronized Kindle edition exists.

How purchasing works
The usual route is to select the Kindle edition, choose Add Audible narration when offered, and complete Buy now with 1-Click. Some titles are offered as a Kindle-and-audiobook bundle; otherwise you can buy the audiobook separately. The add-on price is title-specific and can vary by marketplace, account and promotion—there is no universal discount.
An Audible membership is not required to listen to an audiobook you purchased; an Amazon account is required. Membership can still change the economics: the U.S. support page retrieved June 5, 2026 listed Audible Plus at $7.95 per month and Premium (formerly Premium Plus during the naming transition) at $14.95 per month for one credit plus Plus Catalog access. Prices and plans can change, and catalog access is not ownership of every title or its Kindle edition. Prime membership is separate from Audible membership.
Important return caveat: If you bought an Audible title through an eligible Add Audible narration link, returning the linked Kindle eBook can trigger an Audible refund and removal of the related audiobook. Check the applicable return terms before treating the two purchases as independent.

How to switch formats
Kindle to Audible
- Open the eligible Kindle book.
- Open the three-dot More menu.
- Select Listen on Audible and confirm opening the Audible app.
Audible to Kindle
Open the eligible audiobook and use the player’s control or menu to open the Kindle reading experience. Labels vary by app version. When the audiobook offers synchronized reading in Audible, tap the toggle above the cover and change Listen to Read & Listen.
How to use Immersion Reading
- Open a compatible audiobook in Audible and confirm that the matching Kindle eBook is available.
- Start playback.
- Use the toggle above the cover to select Read & Listen.
- Follow the highlighted text as the narrator speaks.
- Adjust font, text size, theme, narration speed and chapter navigation to suit the session.
Highlighting may help some readers keep their eyes anchored to the passage, but Audible’s documentation establishes synchronized display—not a guaranteed improvement in focus, reading speed, memory or comprehension.

Older official results mentioned Fire OS 7, while the newer page says Fire OS 8. Treat the newer requirement as current and verify before purchasing for an older Fire tablet. A supported phone or tablet may be enough; you do not need to buy a Kindle e-reader solely for this feature.
Troubleshooting a missing or wrong position
- Confirm eligibility: Recheck the Read & Listen badge or Add Audible narration option. Not every title pair qualifies.
- Check the account: Make sure both editions are in libraries linked to the same Amazon account.
- Go online: Connect to the internet and refresh each library.
- Reset Audible sync: In Audible, open Profile → Settings (gear) → Player, turn Sync device position off, then on.
- Restart and update: Close and reopen the apps, install available updates, and test on another supported device.
- Escalate: If the title remains unsynchronized, contact Audible support; do not assume every Audible/Kindle pair is supported.
A position can be approximate when editions have different front matter, chapter structures or production edits. Physical books and unrelated editions cannot be synchronized reliably.

It can help in a practical, limited sense: you spend less time searching for the last passage, can continue one book while commuting, cooking or exercising, and can use highlighted text when listening at a desk. Alternating formats may also suit readers who find a single medium tiring or inaccessible.

Those are workflow benefits, not a clinical or educational claim. Audio can still compete with attention during complex tasks, and simultaneous text and narration is not automatically better for every reader.
Is the audiobook add-on worth it?
- Good fit: You already read Kindle books, regularly change environments, want one title in both formats, and the product page offers a reasonable add-on price.
- Skip it: You only want audio, already have another audiobook service, use unsupported hardware, expect physical-book synchronization, or the title lacks Read & Listen support.
- Compare routes: For one title, compare the à-la-carte audiobook price with the add-on. For several specific titles, compare membership credits. For catalog browsing, Plus may be useful, but included titles and Kindle pairing vary. Library loans can cost less, though availability, loan periods and format matching differ.
Text-to-speech and accessibility tools are alternatives for reading access, but they are different technologies and generally do not provide Audible’s professional narration with synchronized Kindle highlighting.
Bottom line
Buy the Kindle-and-Audible combination when the specific title is marked Read & Listen or Add Audible narration, you will genuinely alternate between reading and listening, and your device is supported. Expect preserved position and less switching friction—not a promise that the technology will make you concentrate.

Do all Audible audiobooks sync with Kindle books?
No. The title must have matching, eligible Kindle and Audible editions. Check for Read & Listen or Add Audible narration before buying.
Do I need an Audible membership?
No. Audible says purchased titles can be listened to without membership. Membership is optional and mainly affects credits, catalog access and discounts.
Can I use Immersion Reading offline?
Do not assume full offline support. Audible says eBook text in the Audible app is streamed, although some pages may be cached.
