Connect an encoder to YouTube Live

- Create or select the live stream in YouTube Studio. Open the live-stream setup and choose the stream you intend to use.
- Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to that stream. Do not share it publicly.
- Enter the URL and key in the encoder. Astra’s listing describes RTMP, RTSP and SRT support; OBS is a desktop encoder. Choose the connection method and fields that YouTube and the current app or OBS interface support.
- Start sending the feed and check YouTube’s preview. Confirm that the intended video and audio arrive before relying on the stream. Starting the encoder sends a feed; it does not by itself prove that prerecorded playback will loop or recover unattended.
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” For a stream intended to remain live for 24 hours or longer, do not assume that YouTube will create one complete archive of the full continuous run. See YouTube’s encoder setup and live-stream guidance.
What a 24/7 setup still has to solve
- Playback and looping: determine how the prerecorded video or playlist is supplied repeatedly. The cited Astra and OBS sources do not verify a complete built-in playlist scheduler for this use case.
- Device and connection continuity: a phone or desktop-based arrangement depends on the device and network remaining available. A device sleep setting, app closure, power loss or internet interruption can stop the feed; the cited sources do not compare how often either app recovers.
- Recovery: check what happens after YouTube or the local connection drops. Do not assume automatic reconnection or playlist resumption unless the specific current software workflow documents it.
- Stream-key security: keep the key private and use YouTube Studio to manage the stream if the key may have been exposed.
- Archive expectations: plan separately for recordings and archives if you need a complete record of a run that exceeds YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive window.
A computer-free hardware alternative
YouTube’s encoder directory describes the AJA HELO Plus and its PlayToStream feature as able to schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer.
