Astra Keeps Restarting Video Instead of Playing the Next File: What to Check

Astra restarting can mean different things: an episode autoplay setting, an older build’s long-video interruption, or a streaming issue. Check the symptom and version first.

If Astra returns to its menu during a long video, or fails to start the next episode, the symptom alone does not identify one cause. First confirm that you’re using the Astra version and Fire TV platform it supports; then check episode autoplay or the long-video fix, depending on when playback stops. If neither fits, gather playback and server details before changing settings.

First, check Astra’s version and your Fire TV platform

Astra is a Jellyfin client for supported Fire TV devices running Vega OS. Its official help page covers Astra 1.4.0 on Vega OS 1.2 or later. Older Android-based Fire TV devices should use the regular Jellyfin app, not Astra. Check Settings > About for the installed version and build. If you’re on an earlier Astra version, update it; Astra notes that an Appstore release may take a day or two to reach a device. Astra’s project release history records version 1.4.0 on September 8, 2026. Astra Help

Pin down when the restart happens

What you see What to check What the evidence says
An episode ends, but the next episode does not start Episode autoplay and its countdown Astra’s help says autoplay is for episodes; movies do not auto-advance. After three consecutive episodes, Astra pauses for confirmation.
A long movie exits during playback and returns to the menu Whether Astra is updated to 1.4.0 Astra documents a long-movie interruption fixed in 1.4.0. The repository describes a Fire TV lifecycle/resource issue during prolonged playback. This is relevant to an early exit, but does not establish why a file fails to advance at an episode boundary.
Playback stutters or buffers as well as restarting Playback statistics, server transcoding, and connection These checks can reveal a streaming-performance problem; they are not a confirmed cure for every restart.

The project describes one affected title stopping after 61 minutes and a 130-minute physical-device acceptance playback for the 1.4.0 fix. Those are details of that project incident and validation, not a general failure rate or a guarantee for every device and file. The available information does not establish which of these cases applies to your device.

Check whether episode autoplay is enabled

  1. In Astra, open Settings > Playback > Next episode autoplay.
  2. Enable autoplay if you want the next episode to start automatically, and adjust the countdown to suit your preference.
  3. Test with another episode. Astra’s help describes autoplay as episode-oriented; it does not automatically move from one movie to another.

Astra’s help explains the three-episode limit this way: “Next episode autoplay — with an adjustable countdown. Astra stops to ask after three episodes in a row rather than running all night on its own.”

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If a long video returns to the menu

Astra’s help lists “A long movie stops partway through and dumps me back to the menu” as a troubleshooting heading and says the issue was fixed in version 1.4.0. Confirm the version in Settings > About and update if needed before treating the interruption as evidence of a device failure. An episode failing to advance at its end is a different symptom; the long-film fix alone does not explain it.

If playback also buffers or stutters

  1. Open Stats for Nerds during playback. Note the video and audio codecs, selected audio track, bitrate, buffer, and dropped frames.
  2. Check Settings > Playback > Server transcoding and make sure it reflects the server’s capabilities.
  3. Run Test server connection and note the bitrate recommendation.
  4. Change Max streaming bitrate only if the buffering or connection evidence supports doing so. Lowering it without a related performance symptom may not address a restart at the end of a file.

Do not assume subtitles are the cause unless the problem began after selecting subtitles or coincides with a reload or buffering. Astra 1.4.0 draws ordinary text subtitles itself; picture-based subtitles and heavily styled ASS/SSA may require server burn-in and stream rebuilding, according to Astra’s help page.

Collect useful evidence if the problem persists

When you can reproduce the failure, record the following before reporting it. These details help distinguish an episode-setting issue from a client, file, server, or connection problem.

  • Astra version and build, from Settings > About, plus your Fire TV model and OS.
  • Jellyfin server version and whether playback is direct or transcoded; include the server’s transcoding hardware if known.
  • The file’s container, video and audio codecs, and resolution.
  • Whether the same file plays in another Jellyfin client.
  • Whether the Fire TV connects locally, over the internet, or through a VPN.
  • When playback stops, whether it returns to the menu or restarts, and any relevant Jellyfin server log entries for that session.

Share these details with the maintainers through Astra’s project page rather than guessing at a cause. Astra’s official help and project records document the version-specific behavior; they do not establish how often this occurs across users or devices.
