Spoilers for Arrival (2016). The scenes that first appear to show Louise Banks remembering her daughter Hannah are actually glimpses of Louise’s future. In the film’s fictional logic, learning the heptapods’ written language lets Louise experience events across her life at once. She comes to know that her future includes profound love and loss, yet still moves toward it.
Why do the opening scenes look like memories?
The film initially frames Louise’s scenes with Hannah as recollections of a daughter who has died. That framing encourages viewers to read the first-contact story as happening after the loss. The ending overturns it: Hannah is Louise’s future daughter, and those scenes are glimpses of events that have not yet happened in the story’s present.
Louise is not simply remembering a past life with Hannah. As she learns the heptapods’ language, she begins to perceive moments from her future. What seemed like a conventional flashback structure is therefore part of the film’s central reveal.
How does the heptapods’ language change Louise’s experience of time?
The heptapods communicate through written circular symbols. The film presents their language as expressing a complete thought all at once rather than unfolding in a human-like sequence. As Louise learns to use it, her own experience of time changes: past, present, and future become accessible together rather than as a strictly linear chain.

This is a speculative rule of Arrival, not an established real-world effect of learning a language. Linguistic relativity—the subject of how language and thought may relate—is a real area of discussion, but the film’s leap from language to foreknowledge and nonlinear perception is fictional. The story uses that premise to make language the means by which Louise encounters her future, not to offer a scientific demonstration.
Does Louise choose her future, or is it predetermined?
Louise learns that her life with Ian will include Hannah’s birth and death, and that the relationship will end. The film does not give a clear mechanism by which she can alter those events. Its ending is not a straightforward time-travel rescue plot: knowing what is ahead does not become a demonstrated way to rewrite it.

The creators have described the question of agency differently. Screenwriter Eric Heisserer said, “It could be that she does have free will, but I think it’s still left up in the air whether the future is deterministic.” He also described wanting to give Louise a choice, saying, “I think that started with an emotional revelation that I had, which was that I felt it was far more profound to give Louise that choice.”
Director Denis Villeneuve put the emphasis elsewhere: “For me, the movie was about a woman having a new relationship with death and changing her perspective on her own life, and finding a new humility going through that process.” Heisserer foregrounds Louise’s choice; Villeneuve foregrounds her changed relationship to mortality and the life she embraces. These are complementary creator readings, not a definitive ruling that the film’s ending settles the free-will question.

Why does Louise move toward Ian if she knows what will happen?
The finale asks whether the certainty of future grief makes a life of love less worth choosing. Louise moves toward Ian despite knowing that their future includes Hannah’s death and the end of their relationship. The film’s emotional force comes from holding joy and loss together: the knowledge that something will end does not erase the meaning of having lived it.
That choice can be read as acceptance rather than an attempt to prevent tragedy. The film leaves room for viewers to decide how much agency Louise has, while placing the emotional weight on her willingness to enter a life whose ending she can already see.

How is the film’s ending different from Ted Chiang’s story?
Arrival was written by Eric Heisserer and adapted from Ted Chiang’s short story “Story of Your Life.” Heisserer has said that the film’s ending grew from his interest in giving Louise a choice, while leaving open whether the future is deterministic. That emphasis makes agency a prominent part of the movie’s ending.
Villeneuve said Heisserer’s first imagined ending leaned more toward technology and less toward language, and that he wanted to return to language as the aliens’ gift. The finished film makes the heptapods’ language central to its treatment of time. The story and film share the broad premise, but Heisserer’s comments help explain why the movie foregrounds the emotional question of choosing a life whose losses are known.
