Memberships pay when viewers join and keep paying; ads can earn from a wider audience, but an ad is not guaranteed to serve every time. Compare your channel’s actual membership receipts and live-stream and replay ad revenue over the same period, then weigh retention, workload, and viewer experience. You can use both.
What memberships and ads pay for
Memberships: recurring payments tied to perks
YouTube channel memberships are recurring monthly payments made in exchange for channel-specific perks. That makes the payment mechanism recurring, but not the amount of income guaranteed: it depends on how many viewers join, how long they remain members, and the net receipts your channel receives. You also need to account for the effort and cost of delivering perks. YouTube does not publish a 24/7-stream membership conversion rate. YouTube’s live monetization overview explains the feature.
Ads: potential revenue across viewers
A monetized live stream can use pre-roll, display, and mid-roll ads. Ads can reach viewers who are not members, but YouTube explicitly says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Actual delivery and earnings depend on what happens with your audience and stream, so an enabled ad setting is not a promise of revenue for every viewer or placement. YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance describes ad formats and delivery.
How to decide for your channel
Compare realized results over the same time window rather than assuming one model pays more. Use YouTube Analytics’ Live filter to examine ad revenue from live streams and their replays, and compare it with membership receipts for that period. Evaluate net revenue alongside audience reach, membership retention, the work required to provide perks, and whether ad frequency changes viewing behavior. The official material does not provide a like-for-like revenue benchmark or break-even point for 24/7 streams.

For a documentary channel, consider whether interruptions fit the way viewers watch a long program, and whether you can offer membership perks you can sustain. Those are channel-specific trade-offs, not a published rule that either format performs better.
Should you enable automatic mid-roll ads?
YouTube recommends automatic live mid-rolls and offers low, medium, and high frequency settings, as well as scheduled intervals and manual insertion. Its guidance says scheduled or manual settings may have lower earnings potential than automatic mode; that is not a guarantee that automatic ads will produce higher net revenue for every channel.

YouTube reports that channels choosing live automatic mid-roll ads saw, on average, over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. This is YouTube’s comparison of ad settings, not a membership-versus-ad comparison or a prediction for an individual continuous stream. YouTube also says automatic mid-rolls can limit ad disruption to channel members, pause mid-rolls temporarily for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats, and Stickers, and snooze ads during high-engagement moments. These controls make memberships and ads potentially complementary.
Eligibility and setup requirements
YouTube’s monetization overview currently lists a 500-subscriber YouTube Partner Program (YPP) entry tier that includes channel memberships, and a 1,000-subscriber tier for Watch Page ads. Each tier has additional requirements; availability and terms can change, so check your channel’s current eligibility in YouTube Studio. - For Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue from live streams, YouTube says you need to accept the Watch Page Monetization Module.
- For fan-funding revenue such as memberships, accept the Commerce Product Module and turn on the individual feature. YouTube notes that creators who already signed the Commerce Product Addendum do not need the new module.
These are separate monetization modules, so qualifying for one revenue feature does not mean the other has been enabled. Confirm the current terms and controls in YouTube Studio.
