Yes: people report objects or phenomena they cannot identify, and government agencies document some of those reports. But an unidentified sighting is not proof of an alien spacecraft. NASA says it has found no evidence that UAP are extraterrestrial, while noting that weak or incomplete data make many cases difficult to assess.
What does “UFO” mean?
UFO is commonly used to mean an unidentified flying object. NASA now uses UAP, meaning “Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena,” a term aligned with the National Defense Authorization Act. The terminology changed after NASA’s independent study had begun.
In either usage, “unidentified” describes the current state of an observation: investigators have not attributed it to a known cause using the information available. It does not identify what caused it. A report can be sincere and worth examining without providing enough evidence to establish what was seen.
Do UFO sightings prove extraterrestrial visitors?
No. NASA’s UAP FAQ, last updated May 8, 2026, says: “NASA has not found any credible evidence of extraterrestrial life and there is no evidence that UAPs are extraterrestrial.” That is a statement about the evidence NASA has found, not proof that life beyond Earth cannot exist; NASA says it continues to search for life elsewhere.

The NASA UAP Independent Study Team’s September 2023 report put the evidence question this way: “To date, in the peer-reviewed scientific literature, there is no conclusive evidence suggesting an extraterrestrial origin for UAP.” The report was intended to recommend how UAP should be studied going forward, not to adjudicate every historical or famous sighting.
Why do some cases remain unexplained?
NASA’s 2023 report says most UAP observations can be attributed to known phenomena or occurrences, while some cannot be identified immediately. It identifies missing or insufficient data as a central obstacle. An image or witness account may not include enough reliable information about an object’s distance, speed, size, location, or surroundings to distinguish among possible explanations.

NASA also explains that eyewitness accounts alone are not reproducible and usually do not establish an observation’s provenance—where the evidence came from and what it represents. Its recommended approach emphasizes systematic, transparent data collection, calibrated sensors, corroboration, and independent evaluation. Earth-observation satellites can add environmental context, but their resolution may be inadequate to detect relatively small objects directly.
What does an official “unresolved” case mean?
AARO’s official UAP imagery catalog includes cases that remain unresolved because the footage and available corroborating data do not support a conclusive attribution. In one 2024 report from Europe, AARO assessed with high confidence that the footage showed a physical object, but described its morphology, performance, and behavior as unremarkable. The case illustrates that confirming an object was present is not the same as determining what it was.

“Unresolved” therefore means the available evidence does not permit a confident attribution. It is not a synonym for “alien,” and one case record should not be treated as a conclusion about all UAP reports.
How should you judge a sighting?
A dramatic video is not, by itself, strong evidence of an extraordinary explanation. To assess a case, look for the quality and completeness of the evidence, not how unusual the clip appears.

- Sensor and metadata: What recorded the event? Is the sensor calibrated, and are timing and other metadata available?
- Corroboration: Are there independent observations or multiple measurement modes, rather than one account or recording?
- Context: Are time, location, and environmental conditions sufficiently documented?
- Ordinary explanations: Were plausible known phenomena examined against the evidence?
- Official conclusion: Does the assessment say an object was present, identify a likely cause, or leave the case unattributed?
NASA’s study supports systematic, calibrated, and corroborated data collection, but it does not prescribe a universal numerical score for ranking sightings. The evidence needed to resolve a case depends on what was recorded and what information is missing.
