The strongest public reading is yes: both songs are associated with Travis Kelce, but the evidence is interpretive rather than an explicit, song-specific confirmation from Taylor Swift. “The Alchemy” points toward football through its sports vocabulary; “So High School” suggests a new romance through teenage imagery and reported biographical connections.
Why listeners connect “The Alchemy” to Travis Kelce
The clearest case is the song’s cluster of football terms. TIME noted that fans connected its sports metaphors to Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end. ELLE identifies references to touchdowns, teams, benches, a winning streak, a trophy and the league—language that makes the Kelce reading readily understandable. TIME’s April 19, 2024 explainer and ELLE’s song analysis discuss the connection.
That pattern supports an association; it does not prove that every line has one biographical referent. The song’s comeback language and references to school and rivals also allow layered readings. ELLE cautions that the song’s ultimate target is not certain, so the Kelce interpretation should not be presented as an official lyric annotation.
What connects “So High School” to Kelce
“So High School” casts romance in a teenage, school-era frame. ELLE connects its image of a high-school power couple with Swift and Kelce, and reports a more specific link in the “Kiss, Marry, Kill” reference: a resurfaced 2016 clip shows Kelce being asked to choose among Swift, Katy Perry and Ariana Grande. According to ELLE, he chose Swift for “kiss.” These details make the biographical reading plausible, but they still do not amount to Swift naming the song’s subject.

ELLE also connects the relationship context to Swift’s 2023 TIME interview. Swift said, “This all started when Travis very adorably put me on blast on his podcast, which I thought was metal as hell.” That comment describes how Kelce first drew her attention and how the relationship began; it is not an explanation of the song. See ELLE’s “So High School” explainer.
How the songs compare
| Song | Connection to Kelce | Album placement | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| “The Alchemy” | Football imagery associated with his NFL career | First part of The Tortured Poets Department | A widely reported interpretation, not direct confirmation |
| “So High School” | Teenage-romance framing and the reported 2016 “Kiss, Marry, Kill” connection | Extended version of the album | A plausible biographical reading, not direct confirmation |
TIME places “The Alchemy” among the final tracks of the album’s first part; ELLE identifies “So High School” with the extended version. The distinction matters: the songs did not appear in the same segment of the release. See TIME’s album-context coverage and ELLE’s track discussion.

What later relationship news can—and cannot—tell us
In August 2025, the Associated Press reported that Swift and Kelce announced their engagement in a joint Instagram post. That is later relationship context, not proof of what Swift intended when writing or releasing either song. The distinction is important whenever a lyric interpretation is being treated as biography. The Associated Press timeline covers the announcement.
