For some stand-up comedians, a luxury watch has become a visible marker of career success—but there is no evidence that owning one is a profession-wide rite of passage. The idea comes from watch coverage and memorable examples, especially comedian Hans Kim’s Rolex Submariner, rather than a representative survey.
Why a luxury watch can signal that a comedian has “made it”
In a feature for Time+Tide, Zach Blass frames luxury watches as a possible rite of passage for stand-ups. The clearest example is Hans Kim. He began as a “hat-pull” performer on Kill Tony, then became a touring comedian who regularly appeared wearing a Rolex Submariner. Blass says host Tony Hinchcliffe credits the show with helping Kim reach a level of success at which he could afford a Rolex. In that story, the watch functions as a sign of having arrived.
That is a compelling cultural reading, not proof of a formal industry custom. A watch is also unusually visible: it can appear in a stage clip, a photograph, or an interview, making it easy to notice and discuss. The examples establish that some comedians wear or collect high-end watches; they do not establish how many do so or what prompted each purchase.
Which watches have been reported on comedians?
Time+Tide’s feature describes a varied group of comedians and watches. These are the publication’s reported observations, not an independently verified inventory or a claim that any comedian endorses a brand.

The spread of brands—from Rolex and Omega to Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, and Patek Philippe—suggests the story is broader than one watch or a required model. It is about the visibility of watch interest and status signaling among selected performers.
Is this a new trend?
No: comedians wearing notable watches have been covered across generations. A MR PORTER watch-spotting feature includes Jerry Seinfeld, Conan O’Brien, Steve Carell, Richard Pryor, Pete Davidson, Donald Glover, Peter Sellers, and Rowan Atkinson. That retrospective makes clear that comedians and conspicuous watches are not a wholly recent pairing. What feels newer is the narrative that an expensive watch marks a contemporary stand-up’s ascent.

Earlier collector profiles also show different relationships to watches. Gear Patrol profiled Kevin Hart, Ellen DeGeneres, and Jerry Seinfeld as collectors. It reports that Hart marks career milestones or achievements with a watch or car, and describes Seinfeld’s interest in Breitling watches. These are individual habits, not evidence of a comedian-wide tradition.
How personal milestones shape the story
In a 2025 GQ interview, John Mulaney describes an Air-King given to him by Olivia Munn to celebrate their son’s birth. Its engraving reads “Malcolm’s Dad.” He also recounts selling watches during a difficult period before later developing a collection that includes Rolex, Grand Seiko, Chopard, and Breitling. His account connects watches to personal history and changing circumstances, rather than proving that comedians generally buy one after reaching a career milestone.

Another personal perspective comes from comedy writer Spike Feresten. In a 2017 Sotheby’s interview about shopping for a watch, he advised: “Do a pre-purchase inspection on your watch just as you do with a car. I don’t need to tell you about all the counterfeits in circulation, so make sure you thoroughly check it out or buy from a place that guarantees authenticity.” That is his advice from that interview, not a current official standard.

The coverage supports a modest conclusion: some comedians collect watches, wear them publicly, or associate them with achievements and life events. It does not establish the share of comedians who own luxury watches, a typical purchase price, or whether ownership has increased over time. So, does a comedian buy a Rolex when they “make it”? Hans Kim’s Submariner is a vivid example of a watch being read that way, and Kevin Hart’s milestone practice offers another personal connection between success and collecting. But the evidence does not support treating a Rolex—or any luxury watch—as a standard career checkpoint. For now, “rite of passage” is best understood as an evocative description of a visible cluster of stories, not a rule of comedy.
