For a fair 24/7 comparison, measure what your actual OBS setup draws while encoding the stream, multiply that use by your applicable electricity rate, and compare the monthly result with a current cloud quote for an equivalent workload. Include reliability, maintenance and hardware you would otherwise need to buy—not just the cloud server’s hourly price.
How to compare the costs fairly
Compare recurring monthly costs on both sides. A cloud hourly rate is not comparable with a home computer’s purchase price, and a full managed streaming architecture is not the same thing as a virtual machine running OBS and sending a feed to YouTube.
- Measure the home setup. Run the intended OBS scene and stream settings, then measure the computer’s average power draw in watts. A plug-in electricity usage monitor can help measure your PC’s power draw.
- Calculate monthly energy use. Use: average watts Ă— 24 Ă— days in the month Ă· 1,000 = monthly kilowatt-hours (kWh). Use the actual number of days for the month you are estimating.
- Apply your marginal electricity rate. Multiply monthly kWh by the rate that applies to the additional consumption. Check your bill or tariff; a country-wide average may not reflect what another unit of consumption costs you.
- Get a workload-matched cloud quote. Specify the region, continuous monthly runtime, resolution, frame rate and encoding workload. Identify whether the quote is for a virtual machine, a managed encoder or a full streaming architecture.
- Check what the quote includes. Depending on the service, account for compute or media processing, storage, outbound traffic, and any discount or reserved commitment. Confirm which costs recur and which depend on use.
- Add relevant home costs. Include incremental cooling, hardware wear, backup power or a change to your internet plan only if they apply. If you already own a suitable computer, distinguish its incremental running cost from the cost of buying a dedicated streaming PC.
There is no responsible universal break-even figure without your measured wattage, electricity rate and a current cloud quote for the same workload. Those inputs vary by home, region and cloud architecture.
What the stream actually requires
OBS or another encoder has to send the live feed to YouTube. YouTube recommends choosing encoder settings that are reliable for your connection and recommends RTMPS. YouTube then transcodes incoming live streams into viewer formats; that viewer-side processing does not remove the need for a source encoder. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Measure power while the intended encoding workload is running, not while the computer is idle. OBS notes that hardware encoding can move work from the CPU to a GPU encoding component, but this does not establish a fixed energy saving across different systems. The result depends on the computer and workload. OBS explains hardware encoding.
When home OBS is the better fit
- You already have a suitable computer and internet connection, and the additional electricity cost is acceptable.
- You want direct control over OBS scenes, sources and encoder settings.
- You can keep the computer, network and any needed backup power running, and are prepared to monitor and recover the stream.
- Your measured monthly home cost compares favorably with a cloud quote that covers the same runtime and encoding job.
When a cloud option may make more sense
- You do not want a home computer or connection to be responsible for keeping the stream running.
- You value remote operation and recovery enough to include those benefits in the decision, even if the monthly bill is not lower.
- You have a current quote for the right region and workload, with the relevant processing, storage and network charges understood.
For prerecorded continuous streams, YouTube lists services such as Gyre as cloud tools for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. Treat that as an option to investigate, not proof that a particular service is the cheapest choice. YouTube’s encoder list identifies available tools.

AWS’s published live-streaming examples describe managed architectures that can include packaging and viewer distribution. They are not a price quote for a basic OBS virtual machine sending a feed to YouTube. AWS also says its estimates depend on assumptions and may be higher than actual costs. Use its deployment guide and live-streaming cost FAQ to understand that architecture, but do not treat an example as a current universal price.
