Those reports raise a genuine concern about spam and recommendation quality, but they do not establish how widespread the problem is: there is no reliable public measurement of the share of Discover Weekly tracks made with AI. Spotify has announced measures against spam and impersonation, while stopping short of a blanket ban on AI-made music.
What listeners are reporting
A Futurism report published October 21, 2025, collected complaints from users who said their Discover Weekly playlists included multiple tracks they suspected were AI-generated. One user reported six suspected AI tracks in a 30-song playlist; another complaint described four among the first five recommendations. These are individual accounts, not audited playlist data.
Listeners also said that playing one suspected AI track seemed to bring more similar music into later recommendations. That may feel like a feedback loop, but the reports do not establish that a single play caused subsequent recommendations. A Musicman report published October 30, 2025, repeated the six-in-30 example and noted that complaints had appeared in Spotify Community discussions for more than a year. It is further reporting on complaints, not an independent survey.
The evidence supports a limited conclusion: some users have encountered tracks they believe are AI-generated in personalized recommendations. It does not show what percentage of Spotify’s playlists contain such tracks, whether certain listeners encounter them more often, or whether Spotify’s system favors AI music.

What Discover Weekly is—and what it is not
Discover Weekly is a personalized playlist that refreshes weekly and recommends music using a listener’s habits and related signals, as described in the Futurism report. It is not the same as a human editor selecting every track for a shared editorial playlist. Spotify also has other recommendation surfaces, including Release Radar, algorithmic radio and autoplay; they are distinct products and should not be treated as interchangeable evidence about Discover Weekly.
That distinction matters when a suspicious track appears. Its presence does not by itself show that an editor deliberately chose it, that Spotify knows who made it, or that the platform intended to promote it. A track can enter a catalogue, become eligible for recommendations, and then be ranked for an individual listener through a different process than editorial selection. Detailed claims about the exact ranking formula are not established by the available reporting.
“AI slop” can mean several different things
“AI slop” is a criticism, not a precise technical or policy category. In this context, it is most useful for music that is generated or substantially assembled with generative tools, released in bulk with little apparent artistic identity, and distributed primarily to capture streams or exploit recommendation and royalty systems. Even then, whether a particular track fits that description requires evidence about its creation and release—not just an impression of how it sounds.
- AI-assisted music: An identifiable human artist uses AI for part of a process such as ideation, production, arrangement, mastering or vocal transformation. This is not automatically deceptive or spam.
- Fully or primarily AI-generated music: Software generates most of a track, potentially with limited human intervention. Whether it is misleading depends on factors such as disclosure, rights and how it is presented.
- AI impersonation: A track or profile uses AI to imitate an identifiable artist’s voice, identity, name or catalogue in a way that could confuse listeners. The deception, not simply the use of a tool, is central.
- Spam or content-farm music: Music is uploaded in bulk to exploit search, recommendations, playlists or royalty systems. It may be AI-generated, but spam can also be made without generative AI.
These categories overlap, but they are not synonyms. A transparent artist using an AI tool is not equivalent to an anonymous catalogue designed to harvest streams; conversely, conventional production does not make a mass-upload scheme legitimate.

Why suspicious tracks could reach recommendations
The following are plausible ways the problem can arise, not confirmed descriptions of Spotify’s ranking system. A recommendation product must work with a large catalogue and signals about listening; those conditions can make it difficult to distinguish a new legitimate act from a deceptive or low-effort upload.
Large catalogues create more chances for exposure
Generative tools can make it easier to produce tracks at scale. Each upload creates another opportunity to be found through search, playlists or recommendations. Volume alone does not prove manipulation—artists can release frequently—but unusually prolific catalogues can be one clue worth examining alongside other evidence.
Metadata and listener behavior can make a track legible
Genre tags, listening behavior and associations with other music may give a recommendation system signals to work with. A new artist need not have a long public history to accumulate some listener activity. But the specific importance of skips, completion, saves or other signals in Discover Weekly is not detailed in the cited coverage, so it would be misleading to present a precise formula.
Manipulation and discovery can intersect
Short, repetitive or background-oriented tracks may be used in attempts to generate low-value or artificial streams. If a track also receives real listening activity or appears in relevant playlist contexts, it could become a candidate for recommendation. That is a possible interaction, not proof that Spotify deliberately recommends such tracks or that any particular playlist placement was manipulated.

New artists present a classification challenge
An unfamiliar artist with little public information might be a real emerging musician or a synthetic catalogue. Sparse biographies, limited credits and new profiles make an investigation harder, but do not settle the question. Recommendation systems and platform enforcement both face a cold-start problem: there may be little reliable history on which to base a judgment.
Clues can prompt a check, but they cannot prove a track is AI-made
The Futurism report described users noticing all-caps artist names, AI-looking imagery, empty biographies and artists with more than ten releases in 2025. Such details may justify a closer look, but they are not a validated detection method. Human artists may be anonymous, prolific, experimental or working with inexpensive artwork; an AI-looking cover does not establish how the audio was made.
Other possible signals include interchangeable titles or arrangements, vague genre descriptions, missing or thin credits, and vocal phrasing or sonic artifacts that sound unnatural. These observations remain suggestive rather than conclusive. Genre conventions can sound repetitive, and AI tools may be used for only one part of an otherwise human-made recording.
A stronger assessment looks for corroboration: release history, credits, label or distributor information, artist statements, and evidence that a profile is impersonating someone. Unless provenance is confirmed by a reliable source, describe a track as “suspected AI-generated,” not as definitively AI-made or fraudulent.

Spotify’s response targets spam and deception, not AI music as a whole
According to the Futurism report on Spotify’s stated measures, the company announced steps aimed at spam, impersonation, deceptive practices, content farms that interfere with legitimate artists, and tactics used to manipulate royalties. Spotify also said it had removed more than 75 million spammy tracks during the preceding 12 months. That is Spotify’s reported figure; “spammy tracks” is broader than AI-generated music, and the number is not an estimate of AI tracks removed.
The coverage reported that Spotify did not impose a blanket ban on AI-generated music. Its stated position was that technology has long shaped music-making and that AI can create opportunities for artists and listeners. That leaves the company with a difficult moderation problem: enforcement that is too broad could penalize legitimate artists, while weak or opaque controls can leave impersonation and bulk-upload schemes in circulation.
Announced measures do not by themselves show that the problem has been solved. The available reporting does not establish how Spotify detects AI-generated work, how many removals involved AI, whether listeners can see AI disclosures, or how the company handles false positives. It also does not prove that Spotify keeps suspicious music online for financial reasons. The platform’s economic incentives may be a fair subject for scrutiny, but motive is not established by the reports of playlist placements.

The Velvet Sundown, a purported indie-rock band that attracted millions of streams, was described as an artistic provocation about authorship and AI. It is therefore not straightforward evidence of fraudulent streaming. An unusual or synthetic-sounding project can be controversial without being a content farm, and high stream counts alone do not establish wrongdoing.
How to document a suspicious recommendation responsibly
If a playlist seems to contain a pattern, preserve enough detail to make the observation checkable rather than treating an impression as proof.
- Record the playlist and date. Note that it was Discover Weekly and when you saw it; the list changes weekly.
- Save the track and artist details. Keep the artist and track URLs, titles, and playlist position if possible.
- Check the context. Review release history, credits, label information, artist biography and any credible statements from the artist, distributor or rights holder.
- Look for identity deception. Check whether the name, image, voice or catalogue appears to misrepresent an identifiable artist.
- Separate observation from conclusion. Record why the track raised concern, but use “suspected” unless its provenance or impersonation is confirmed.
- Use Spotify’s available feedback or reporting tools. Skip or avoid saving music you do not want to reinforce as a preference, but do not assume that one action will permanently retrain or cleanse recommendations.
Listeners who want more control over discovery can follow artists directly and supplement algorithmic playlists with independent radio, music publications, trusted communities or human-curated sources. That is a way to diversify discovery, not a guarantee that any source is free of synthetic music.
The unresolved test for Spotify
The central question is not whether every use of AI in music should be prohibited. It is whether Spotify can keep legitimate experimentation available while making impersonation, bulk spam and recommendation manipulation harder—and explain its standards clearly enough that artists and listeners can understand enforcement. User reports make the issue worth taking seriously; transparent prevalence data and clearer disclosure practices would be needed to establish its scale and judge the platform’s response.
