Arcane turned the world of League of Legends into a self-contained animated drama: Riot Games and French studio Fortiche Production built on a creative partnership that predated the series, while co-creators Christian Linke and Alex Yee shaped a story that viewers did not need to know the game to follow. Calling it Netflix’s “best” show is a matter of taste, not a ranking established by the available figures. What is clear is that Arcane became a major launch-era hit and an Emmy-winning adaptation.
What is Arcane about?
Arcane is an animated series based on Riot Games’ League of Legends universe. It follows characters and conflicts rooted in that world, but tells its story as a dramatic television series rather than as a game tutorial. Netflix identifies Christian Linke and Alex Yee as its co-creators, with Riot Games and Fortiche Production as its producing partners.
That distinction helps explain the show’s reach: familiarity with the game can add context, but the series is designed to work as a story in its own right. Its connection to a large game universe gives it a setting and characters; the adaptation still has to make those elements legible to a television audience.
Do you need to play League of Legends before watching?
No. The series is based on the game’s universe, but you can watch it without playing League of Legends. Treat the show as an entry point to its own characters and conflicts. Game knowledge may help viewers recognize references or understand the larger setting, but it is not a prerequisite for following the television story.

How did League of Legends become a Netflix series?
Arcane grew out of a working relationship between Riot and Fortiche, not just a one-time decision to license a game for television. Riot says it first collaborated with Fortiche and Linke on the 2012 character video “Get Jinxed,” made for the League champion Jinx. That earlier project gave the companies experience collaborating on animated storytelling before they embarked on the series.
Riot and Netflix announced the television adaptation in 2019, describing it as a series based on the League of Legends universe and produced by Riot with Fortiche. Riot later announced an equity investment in the animation studio, further documenting the relationship between the companies. The investment announcement also recorded the partners’ earlier history and the show’s launch-era performance.

Why did Arcane take so long to make?
Animation on this scale is a sustained creative undertaking, and the relationship behind Arcane had already developed through earlier projects. Netflix’s season-two production feature says the first drawing for the new season was made just after season one debuted in November 2021, and describes the work as a three-year creative effort. That description refers to the season’s creative process; it should not be read as a precise accounting of every production stage.
The long runway is part of the adaptation’s story. Riot brought knowledge of its game world, while Fortiche brought an established collaboration with Riot to animated projects. The series depended on those partners turning a familiar fictional universe into a coherent television drama, rather than relying on game recognition alone.

Was Arcane really Netflix’s best show?
“Best” depends on the yardstick: critical acclaim, awards, audience reach, or personal preference can produce different answers. The official figures cited here establish a breakout launch and major industry recognition, but they do not compare Arcane with Netflix’s entire catalog using a consistent measure of viewing, audience satisfaction, or completion.
Riot reported that in November 2021 the series premiered at number one globally on Netflix, held that position for three weeks, and reached the top ten in more than 52 countries. These are historical launch claims published by Riot in March 2022, not a statement about current Netflix rankings. Riot also reported a 100% Rotten Tomatoes critics score at that time; that dated figure should not be mistaken for a current score.

Netflix reported that Arcane won four Primetime Emmy Awards in 2022, including Outstanding Animated Program, and described it as the first streaming series to win that category. The awards and launch claims support calling the series a widely recognized success; they do not prove it is objectively Netflix’s best show.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Arcane finished after season two?
Netflix describes season two as the final chapter of Arcane. That closes the series as presented in Netflix’s release feature; it does not mean the wider League of Legends universe has ended or establish whether Riot will tell other stories in it.
