The April 24 “National Rape Day” claim was a debunked viral hoax from 2021—not a real holiday, law, TikTok challenge, or verified event. However, a specific threat, stalking attempt, sexual-violence post, or assault should still be documented, reported, and escalated to real-world authorities when necessary.
What was the April 24 TikTok trend?
“April 24” refers to a rumor that spread on TikTok and other social platforms in March and April 2021. Viral posts claimed that a group of men had designated April 24 as a day when sexual violence would supposedly be legal or encouraged.
That claim was not supported by credible evidence. The alleged event was not an official observance, a change in the law, or a verified organized activity. Because the subject involves sexual violence, avoid reposting graphic descriptions or repeating the rumor as though it were an authentic event.
The original allegation concerned April 24, 2021. Renewed posts or articles in 2025 and 2026 represent renewed discussion of the old rumor unless independent evidence identifies a new, specific threat. Resurfacing alone does not establish an annual event or a new coordinated plan.

Media Matters reported that TikTok said it had not found evidence of videos promoting the alleged event on its platform at the time. That statement should be understood precisely: it was TikTok’s assessment then, not proof that no individual anywhere had made a threatening post.
Was April 24 a real “National Rape Day”?
No credible evidence supports the existence of a real “National Rape Day.” The frequently repeated story that six men created or promoted the event was part of the viral claim, not an established fact. Reporting did not substantiate the supposed originating group or video.
The safest conclusion is therefore two-part:
- The mass-event allegation was an unsubstantiated 2021 hoax.
- A separate, specific threat must be assessed on its own details rather than dismissed because it mentions the hoax.
A vague warning, recycled screenshot, or post that names only a date is very different from a direct threat naming a person, place, time, weapon, or planned action.
How did the rumor start?
The exact origin is uncertain. The rumor circulated across TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and other platforms during March and April 2021, so saying simply that it “started on TikTok” is too definite.
Know Your Meme identifies a March 20, 2021 TikTok by @glambyizzy as an early widely viewed post discussing the rumor. That post appears to have reacted to or amplified the claim; it does not prove that the creator originated it.

Similarly, the often-repeated account of an original video made by six men was not verified. Some early amplification appears to have involved trolls, screenshots, and users discussing the allegation rather than evidence of a genuine organization behind it.
The topic was also covered in headlines that sometimes repeated the frightening allegation before clearly establishing that it was unverified. The original April 18, 2021 Tech Times article is an example of coverage associated with the wording of this topic—not evidence that the alleged event was real.

Fear-based warnings are highly shareable, especially when they appear to protect women, girls, or children. Reposts often stripped away uncertainty and made the rumor look confirmed. Cross-platform sharing then carried it far beyond its original posts.
Attempts to debunk the claim could also increase its visibility. Users who stitched, quoted, or reposted frightening material— even to condemn it—gave more people a chance to encounter the allegation. A Media Matters review published April 23, 2021 reported that 48 of the 50 most-viewed TikTok videos it examined about the hoax contained misinformation. That was a sample-based review, not a measurement of every video on TikTok.
Did the hoax cause real harm?
Yes. An unsupported claim can still produce genuine consequences. The rumor caused fear among users and families, sensationalized sexual violence, and made it harder to distinguish a baseless mass warning from a credible threat involving a real person or location.

Some related advice was potentially dangerous. Media Matters highlighted the #GrabHisArm advice, which encouraged women to physically intervene with men they suspected might be involved. Do not confront, follow, restrain, bait, or physically test strangers because of a viral warning. A supposed safety tactic can create additional danger.

How to report a threatening TikTok video
If a post violates TikTok’s rules or contains threatening or abusive material, preserve essential evidence privately and report the post itself. Do not repost it, stitch it, duet it, or quote-share it for attention.
In the TikTok app
- Open the post.
- Tap Share, or press and hold the post.
- Tap Report.
- Select the closest reason and any available subtopic, such as threats, violence, sexual content, or harassment.
- Tap Submit.
On the web, use the video’s More options (…) → Report controls, choose the most accurate reason, and submit the report. TikTok says menu labels and available categories may vary by region, device, account, and app version. Follow the current TikTok instructions for reporting a post.
Choose the category that accurately describes the content. Do not falsely select a category merely to try to increase the chance of removal.
How to report the account
- Open the person’s profile.
- Tap Share at the top.
- Tap Report.
- Choose Report account.
- Select a reason and tap Submit.
On the web, open the profile and select More options (…) → Report → Report account. See TikTok’s account-reporting instructions.

How to report a threatening direct message
- Open Inbox and enter the relevant chat.
- Press and hold the specific message, or use the chat’s More options (…) control.
- Tap Report.
- Select the applicable reason.
- Choose Report and block or Report, then tap Done.
Use TikTok’s direct-message reporting guidance if the labels differ in your app.
What evidence should you save?
Content can be deleted or edited, so record enough context before blocking the account. Save:
- The username and display name.
- The profile URL and video URL.
- The caption, hashtags, comments, and on-screen text.
- The date and time you saw the content.
- Any named person, address, school, workplace, or location.
- The surrounding message thread, not just a cropped sentence.
Do not download or redistribute sexual-abuse material involving minors. Preserve only what is necessary and use the appropriate official reporting channel.
When is a TikTok threat potentially credible?
Assess the content itself, not merely the fact that it mentions April 24. A post is more concerning when it includes a named target, specific place, concrete time, direct statement of intent, weapon reference, admission of preparation, repeated targeting, or details independently corroborated elsewhere.

For an imminent threat involving a named person or location, a weapon, an ongoing assault, or immediate danger, contact local emergency services at once. Do not wait for TikTok to respond. For a specific but non-immediate threat, contact local law enforcement and, where relevant, a school, workplace safety office, guardian, or other responsible authority.

Do not confront or investigate the poster yourself. Do not contact a suspected attacker, arrange a meeting, or attempt to verify the threat by approaching strangers.
If TikTok’s normal report route fails
Keep the evidence and note when you submitted the report. Use TikTok’s broader Report a problem and Safety Center pathways, selecting the specific post, account, comment, message, or other content whenever possible. TikTok provides separate routes for issues including bullying, sexual abuse, comments, LIVE content, hashtags, and other safety concerns.
A platform report is not a substitute for emergency services, law enforcement, medical help, or specialist support when someone faces immediate danger or has been assaulted.
Advice for parents, educators, and guardians
If a child or teenager is frightened by the rumor, ask them to show you the original post or message. Take the fear seriously while explaining that the mass-event claim was not supported by evidence. Avoid forwarding the warning to other children.
Review privacy, direct-message, comment, blocking, and account settings together. If the child received a specific threat, preserve the context and involve the guardian, school, platform, or police according to the seriousness and immediacy of the situation.
