These downloads are normally encrypted, temporary app data—not MP4 files that can be moved to a USB drive or opened in VLC.
The best choice depends on where the documentary is available, whether your plan includes downloads, and how long you need to keep it. The options below reflect United States availability and app limits as of August 9, 2026.

Netflix
Netflix is often the most convenient option for documentaries already included with a subscription. Its catalogue changes by country, and not every title has offline rights. A documentary labelled a “Netflix Original” is not automatically downloadable; Netflix may have streaming rights without download rights.
How to download a Netflix documentary
- Open the Netflix app.
- Tap Downloads.
- Choose See What You Can Download.
- Select a movie and tap Download.
- Later, open Downloads and tap Play.
For a series, tap the download icon beside an episode or choose Download Season. Netflix supports downloads on Android, iPhone/iPad, Fire tablets, and compatible Chromebooks. Its Windows app no longer supports downloads.

Ad-free plans can hold up to 100 active downloads per device, subject to the plan’s device limit. Ad-supported plans are limited to 15 total downloads per device per calendar month. Downloads remain tied to the device, require you to stay signed in, and expire after a period set by Netflix. Some titles also limit how many times they can be downloaded in a year.
Prime Video
Prime Video is useful when a documentary is available through your subscription but also gives you the option to rent or buy a title. Open the title’s detail page in the app and select Download. For a series, use the icon beside an episode or download the entire season where that option appears.
Downloads work in the Prime Video apps for iOS, Android, macOS, Windows 10/11, and Fire tablets. On Android and Windows, the app can let you choose a storage location, although Amazon does not recommend using a USB-connected drive.
There is an important offline-viewing catch: a downloaded Prime Video title cannot be played through Chromecast or AirPlay. You need to watch it in the app on the device holding the download, or use a supported television setup that permits offline playback.

Rented documentaries remain in your library for 30 days from rental. Once playback begins, the viewing period is generally at least 48 hours, though an individual title may offer longer.
Disney+
Disney+ includes documentary material from Disney and National Geographic, but offline viewing requires an eligible premium plan or bundle. Disney+ With Ads does not support downloads. Downloads are also unavailable on computers, Windows tablets, and TV-connected devices.

How to download on Disney+
- Open the Disney+ app.
- Open a documentary or other movie.
- Tap Download below the Play button.
- Find it later under the Downloads icon on the Home screen.
For a series, download an individual episode from its episode page. To adjust storage use, go to Profile icon → App Settings → Video Quality or Download Quality. The available choices are Standard, Medium, and High; High quality takes longer and uses more storage.
Disney+ allows downloads on up to 10 supported mobile devices. Each device must connect to the internet at least once every 30 days. A title can disappear sooner if it leaves the Disney+ library, and signing out removes the device’s downloads.

Max places a clear limit on downloads by plan:

On a phone or tablet, downloadable titles display a download icon. Tap it, then go to Downloads at the bottom of the app to watch. Max also limits Standard and Premium accounts to 30 downloaded movies at once, while a series may be limited to 25 downloaded episodes from the same show.
To manage quality, use Profile → App Settings → Download Settings → Video Quality, then choose Good, Better, or Best. The same Download Settings menu includes Download Over Wi-Fi Only, which is worth enabling if you have a capped mobile plan.
Unwatched downloads expire after 30 days, or sooner if Max loses the title. After you start watching, the download normally expires after 48 hours. Max stores downloads in internal device storage and does not support saving them to an SD card. Computer and TV apps do not support downloads.
Hulu
Hulu supports downloads for selected movies and shows through its mobile app, provided you have an eligible subscription. The feature is not available for every title, so the absence of a download button usually means that the programme is not licensed for offline playback.

Hulu downloads may be limited to 25 titles across five supported mobile devices. If your Disney+ subscription includes linked Hulu Premium access, some Hulu content may be downloadable—but the download normally takes place in the Hulu app, not the Disney+ app.
Peacock
Peacock’s offline feature requires Premium Plus. In the Peacock app, open eligible content and tap the Download icon in the bottom-right corner. Return to the home page and tap the Download icon in the bottom-left corner to find saved titles.
The account limit is 25 downloaded pieces of content across devices. Some titles can be downloaded only 10 times per account. Unwatched downloads are removed after 30 days or when the title leaves Peacock; once playback starts, the download is removed after 48 hours. Signing out or uninstalling the app removes downloads from that device.
Apple TV
The Apple TV app covers several different kinds of access: Apple TV subscription content, third-party Apple TV channels, rentals, and purchases. Their download rules are not identical.

- Open the Apple TV app on an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Windows PC.
- Find the movie or documentary.
- Select the title and choose Download.
- Watch it later through Library → Downloaded.
Apple TV downloads are unavailable on Apple TV hardware, smart TVs, streaming devices, and tv.apple.com. Most channel downloads remain available for up to 30 days, although channel providers may impose shorter periods or other limits.
Purchased films and shows are different from subscription access. They can generally be downloaded to an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Windows PC for offline use. Apple nevertheless warns that a purchase could become unavailable for future redownload if its rights change, so downloading purchased documentaries to a device you control is sensible.

Google TV
Google TV is primarily a purchase-and-rental service rather than a way to download subscription catalogues from every streaming platform. It is a straightforward choice if you want one particular documentary without taking out another monthly subscription.
- Open the Google TV app.
- Tap Your stuff.
- On Android, choose Movies or Shows. On iPhone or iPad, choose Library.
- Find the purchased or rented title and tap Download.
Downloads work on phones and tablets, not Google TV streaming devices. A purchased video can be downloaded on up to five devices; a rental can be downloaded on one device at a time.
To permit mobile-data downloads on Android, use Profile picture or initial → Google TV settings → Downloads → Network → Download on any network. On iPhone or iPad, use Profile picture or initial → Google TV settings → Preferences → Network → Choose download network → Download on any network. Carrier charges may apply.

YouTube supports offline playback for purchased and rented movies and television episodes in its iOS and Android apps. You do not need YouTube Premium for titles you have bought or rented.
- Sign in to the YouTube app with the Google Account used for the purchase or rental.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Choose Your movies & TV.
- Select the documentary or episode.
- Tap Download and choose the available quality.
Purchased titles can be downloaded on up to five devices. Rented titles can be downloaded on one device at a time. UHD video is not available for download.
A title cannot be downloaded simultaneously in both the YouTube app and the Google TV or Google Play Movies & TV app on the same device. Delete the existing download from one app before downloading it in the other.

How to choose the right app
- Check where the documentary is licensed. Search the film in the apps you already use before paying for another service.
- Check the plan, not just the app. Disney+ With Ads, Max Basic with Ads, and most lower-cost plans do not include downloads.
- Check the device. Most services support phones and tablets, but TV apps and streaming sticks commonly do not.
- Download on Wi-Fi. A feature-length documentary can consume several gigabytes at high quality. Use the app’s Wi-Fi-only setting where available.
- Download shortly before the trip. Expiry windows vary, and a title may leave a catalogue while it is stored on your device.
- Open the app before going offline. Many services require a recent account check, and some require you to remain signed in.
What these apps cannot do
Official download buttons do not normally create portable movie files. The saved data is encrypted and designed to play only inside the authorised app. In practice, you cannot transfer a Netflix or Max download to another phone, copy it to a USB stick, or open it in VLC.
Offline access can also disappear when a licence ends, a rental period expires, a subscription changes, you sign out, or you uninstall the app. Claims that a streaming service can download every movie permanently or export subscription content as an unrestricted MP4 are not describing the normal legal features of these apps.

Which app is best for downloading documentaries?
Use the service that legally carries the documentary and offers downloads on your device. Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Max, Hulu, and Peacock are useful for subscription catalogues; Apple TV, Google TV, and YouTube are better when you want to rent or buy one specific film.
Can I download a movie as an MP4 file?
Usually not. Legal streaming apps save encrypted offline data that can be played only inside the relevant app. You generally cannot move it to a USB drive, copy it to another device, or play it in VLC.

The title may not have offline rights, may be restricted by your plan or region, or may be unavailable for downloads on your device. A streaming licence does not always include a download licence.
Can I watch a downloaded movie on a smart TV?
Usually you must watch the download on the phone, tablet, computer, or headset that stored it. For example, Apple TV does not support downloads on smart TVs or streaming devices, and Prime Video says downloaded content cannot be played through Chromecast or AirPlay.
The Bottom Line
For a documentary already included in a subscription, start with Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Max, Hulu, or Peacock and confirm that your plan includes offline viewing. For a film you want to keep available without depending on a catalogue, buying it through Apple TV, Google TV, or YouTube is the more reliable route—but even purchases remain subject to platform rights and app restrictions.
