Apple has struck a real deal to develop screen adaptations from Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere. The first reported focus is Mistborn as a feature-film project and The Stormlight Archive as a television adaptation. However, neither project has a publicly announced cast, release date, production start, or full greenlight.
The latest meaningful update is that Sanderson completed a first draft of the Mistborn screenplay on July 28, 2026. He described that milestone as an early step—not proof that filming or release scheduling has begun.
What Apple actually agreed to
The deal was reported on January 28, 2026, in an exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter, later summarized by MacRumors. Sanderson’s official film-and-TV page links to the report and confirms the subsequent screenplay update.

That is different from saying Apple bought the Cosmere outright or ordered every Cosmere book for film and television.

The public reporting does not disclose the deal’s price, duration, territories, exclusivity, or title-by-title rights. It is therefore too broad to claim that every Cosmere novel is guaranteed to appear on Apple’s service.
What is the Cosmere?
The Cosmere is Sanderson’s shared fictional setting: a connected universe containing several fantasy and science-fiction series and standalone works. Its best-known properties include Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive, alongside books such as Elantris, Warbreaker, The Emperor’s Soul, Tress of the Emerald Sea, and Yumi and the Nightmare Painter.
That shared setting makes this more ambitious than a conventional adaptation of one isolated book series. It also explains why the initial projects matter: Apple is reportedly pursuing different Cosmere stories in different screen formats.
The first reported projects
Mistborn films
Mistborn is being considered as a feature-film series. The likely narrative starting point is Mistborn: The Final Empire, Sanderson’s 2006 novel, although no final film title, director, cast, production date, or release plan has been announced.

Sanderson said on July 28, 2026, that the first draft of the Mistborn screenplay was complete. That is a substantial development milestone, but a screenplay draft can still undergo major revisions—or fail to move into production.
The Stormlight Archive television adaptation
The Stormlight Archive was reported as a television project in early planning. The same reporting identified Blue Marble, the production company run by Theresa Kang-Lowe, as attached to the development. Kang-Lowe has an exclusive content-production relationship with Apple, according to the report summarized by MacRumors.
No series order, showrunner, cast, episode count, filming location, production start, or premiere date has been disclosed in the available reporting.

Sanderson’s unusually extensive creative role
Public reporting says Sanderson is expected to be involved as a universe architect, writer, producer, and consultant, with participation in approvals over the screen adaptations. Those terms give him a more prominent role than many authors receive when their books move to the screen.

That involvement could help preserve the Cosmere’s long-term continuity and prevent adaptations from contradicting major worldbuilding decisions. It does not necessarily mean Sanderson has unilateral final cut or an absolute veto over every creative and business decision; the underlying contract has not been made public.
The latest status: development, not release
Sanderson’s State of the Sanderson 2025 provides useful context. Before the Apple agreement was announced, he described the adaptation process as being at a very early stage after Hollywood pitch meetings and several offers. He also noted that screen projects can move backward, stall, or return to an earlier phase.
The relevant development stages are:
- Rights or development agreement
- Screenplay development
- Formal greenlight or series order
- Preproduction
- Principal photography
- Postproduction
- Release
The Cosmere projects are publicly established only within the early part of that sequence. The completed Mistborn draft shows progress, but it does not establish financing, casting, filming, or distribution.
Why the two projects may use different formats
Mistborn may offer a more contained entry point for a film series, while The Stormlight Archive would need long-form television to accommodate its scale, multiple viewpoint characters, extensive mythology, and large narrative arcs.
That format split is potentially significant. Apple would not simply be adapting one franchise twice; it would be testing whether a connected fantasy setting can work across feature films and television. The approach could eventually support a broader portfolio, but the public deal does not guarantee that such a portfolio will be produced.
Potential opportunities and adaptation challenges
Apple has a global streaming and production platform, while the Cosmere offers multiple properties that could support different formats. Its premium-production positioning may also suit stories requiring large-scale worldbuilding and visual effects.
Those advantages come with substantial risks. Sanderson’s books contain intricate magic systems, dense terminology, multiple timelines, and extensive internal narration. Screen versions must communicate that information visually and dramatically without overwhelming new viewers.

He is best known as a novelist, and adaptation requires different pacing, structure, and exposition choices. Planning a shared universe before the first project succeeds could also create pressure to build a franchise prematurely.

What “AppleTV acquired the Cosmere” gets wrong
“AppleTV acquired rights to the Cosmere” is a useful shorthand for the news, but it can imply more than the evidence supports. Apple has not been shown to own Sanderson’s literary universe, and the deal should not be presented as a guaranteed cinematic universe or complete adaptation slate.
A more precise summary is: Apple has a reported deal to develop screen adaptations from the Cosmere, with Mistborn films and a Stormlight Archive television project identified as the initial focus.
Apple’s official TV press archive is the relevant place to watch for future announcements, but the detailed deal terms currently come from the reported Hollywood Reporter exclusive and coverage of it rather than a published contract.
