Its third season premiered globally on Apple TV on January 9, 2026. A report published two days later said the show ranked second among Apple TV streaming shows that week—but that was a dated chart snapshot, not its current position or a measure of how many people watched.
What is Tehran about?
Tehran follows Tamar, played by Niv Sultan, a Mossad hacker-agent who enters Tehran under a false identity. The series is co-produced by Apple TV and Israeli public broadcaster KAN 11. Apple’s official synopsis and cast information are on its series page.
Season three adds Hugh Laurie as Eric Peterson, a South African nuclear inspector, alongside returning cast members Shaun Toub and Shila Ommi. Apple announced an eight-episode season. [C003]
What does the streaming-chart report actually say?
On January 11, 2026, ComicBook.com reported, citing FlixPatrol, that Tehran had reached second place among Apple TV streaming shows that week. That is the specific claim behind its return to the charts; it should not be read as a current ranking, a worldwide all-platform position, or an audited audience total. The report does not establish how many people watched the series. ComicBook.com’s report describes the ranking snapshot. [C001]

Why is Tehran described as controversial?
The available evidence supports a narrower account than the label alone might suggest. The third-season release was delayed, and secondary chronology connects changes to the show’s production timeline with real-world regional events and parallels between its fictional story and current events. However, Apple’s announcement confirms the release schedule without explaining the delay or attributing it to any particular political pressure. The evidence cited here does not establish a specific motive or conclusively document a single public controversy. [C003][C005]
Apple did not include an attributed statement about the controversy in the announcement used here. Its release provides the schedule, cast, premise, episode count, and renewal information, not a named person’s explanation of the show’s timing. [C003]

What is known about season four?
Apple announced in December 2025 that Tehran had been renewed for a fourth season and that production was then underway. The announcement did not give a premiere date, so there is no season-four release date established by that source. [C003]
