Apple TV has reportedly secured screen rights connected to Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere, with a feature-film adaptation of Mistborn and a television adaptation of The Stormlight Archive as the first named projects. They are in development, not available to watch: as of August 16, 2026, Sanderson had completed a first draft of the Mistborn screenplay, but the sources reviewed establish no production start or release date.

What Apple TV’s Cosmere deal covers

TheWrap reported on January 28, 2026, that Apple TV had acquired rights connected with Sanderson’s Cosmere and was developing a Mistborn feature adaptation and a Stormlight Archive series, with Blue Marble Pictures attached to produce. TheWrap’s announcement described both as early-development projects.

Sanderson’s representative, Weintraub Tobin, described the rights as covering Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive for development across film and television. Its statement characterized the plans as a Mistborn feature-film franchise and a Stormlight television series, with Sanderson participating as producer and creative consultant. Weintraub Tobin’s statement does not establish that every Cosmere novel has a confirmed adaptation.

How the two announced adaptations differ

Project Planned format Development status reported by August 16, 2026 Source books
Mistborn Feature-film adaptation; the representative described plans for a film franchise. Sanderson said he had finished a first draft of the screenplay. That is a script milestone, not a production start or greenlight. The first trilogy is The Final Empire, The Well of Ascension, and The Hero of Ages, published from 2006 to 2008.
The Stormlight Archive Television adaptation. The sources reviewed report the project’s development, but no equivalent script milestone, episode count, season plan, cast, or release window. The Way of Kings is the first novel in the series.

The format and status descriptions come from TheWrap’s January 2026 report, Weintraub Tobin’s statement, and Sanderson’s August 2026 interview in The Salt Lake Tribune. The novels are source material, not tie-in editions, and readers do not need a particular edition to follow either project.

What Sanderson has said about the screenplay

In an August 16, 2026 interview with The Salt Lake Tribune, Sanderson said: “My job has been to write the screenplays and convince them that these books can work in screenplay form.” He described Mistborn as being considered for a feature adaptation and The Stormlight Archive as headed for television.

Sanderson’s official Film and TV News page reproduced his announcement that the first draft of the Mistborn screenplay was done. He called it “just an early step in a very long process.” The draft is evidence of writing progress; it does not confirm that Apple TV has ordered the film or that filming is underway.

Why an announced deal is not a release announcement

Screen projects can be announced while still at an early option or development stage. In his 2024 explanation of adaptation development, Sanderson distinguished early development from later steps such as script work, studio approvals, production, and release. A deal announcement therefore does not mean a project has been greenlit or that a finished film or series is imminent.

As of the latest dated update in the sources reviewed, August 16, 2026, no production start or release date was established. The sources also do not establish casting, the number of Stormlight episodes, deal finances, full contract terms, or confirmed adaptations of other Cosmere books. TheWrap named Blue Marble Pictures as attached to produce; MacRumors associated producer Theresa Kang-Lowe with the Stormlight television project, but neither report supplies a complete creative-team or contract roster.
